    Up-Down Asymmetry of Neutral Current Events as a Diagnostic for Nu_mu - Nu-st Versus Nu_mu- Nu_tau Oscillations

    We show that the asymmetry in the neutral current events (e.g. Nu N -> Nu N pi^0) can be used to discriminate between Nu_mu - Nu_tau and Nu_mu - Nu_st mixing as being responsible for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. Specifically, A_N vanishes for Nu_mu - Nu_tau mixing and is about 2/3 A_mu for Nu_mu - Nu_st mixing.Comment: 3pages, 1 figur

    Simulations of the effect of diffusion on asymmetric spin echo based quantitative BOLD: An investigation of the origin of deoxygenated blood volume overestimation

    Quantitative BOLD (qBOLD) is a technique for mapping oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and deoxygenated blood volume (DBV) in the human brain. Recent measurements using an asymmetric spin echo (ASE) based qBOLD approach produced estimates of DBV which were systematically higher than measurements from other techniques. In this study, we investigate two hypotheses for the origin of this DBV overestimation using simulations and consider the implications for experimental measurements. Investigations were performed by combining Monte Carlo simulations of extravascular signal with an analytical model of the intravascular signal.Hypothesis 1: DBV overestimation is due to the presence of intravascular signal which is not accounted for in the analysis model. Intravascular signal was found to have a weak effect on qBOLD parameter estimates.Hypothesis 2: DBV overestimation is due to the effects of diffusion which are not accounted for in the analysis model. The effect of diffusion on the extravascular signal was found to result in a vessel radius dependent variation in qBOLD parameter estimates. In particular, DBV overestimation peaks for vessels with radii from 20 to 30 μm and is OEF dependent. This results in the systematic underestimation of OEF.Implications: The impact on experimental qBOLD measurements was investigated by simulating a more physiologically realistic distribution of vessel sizes with a small number of discrete radii. Overestimation of DBV consistent with previous experiments was observed, which was also found to be OEF dependent. This results in the progressive underestimation of the measured OEF. Furthermore, the relationship between the measured OEF and the true OEF was found to be dependent on echo time and spin echo displacement time. The results of this study demonstrate the limitations of current ASE based qBOLD measurements and provide a foundation for the optimisation of future acquisition approaches

    © The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2013The three-dimensional morphologies of the Fe-bearing intermetallics in a semisolid-processed Al-Mg-Si alloy were examined after extracting the intermetallics. α -AlFeSi and β-AlFeSi are the major Fe-bearing intermetallics. Addition of Al-Ti-B grain refiner typically promotes β-AlFeSi formation. β-AlFeSi was observed with a flat, plate-like morphology with angular edges in the alloy with and without grain refiner, whereas α -AlFeSi was observed as "flower"-like morphology in the alloy with grain refiner. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International

    Optical Spectra of SNR Candidates in NGC 300

    We present moderate-resolution (<5A) long-slit optical spectra of 51 nebular objects in the nearby Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300 obtained with the 2.3 meter Advanced Technology Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. Adopting the criterion of [SII]/Ha>=0.4 to confirm supernova remnants (SNRs) from optical spectra, we find that of 28 objects previously proposed as SNRs from optical observations, 22 meet this criterion with six showing [SII]/Ha of less than 0.4. Of 27 objects suggested as SNRs from radio data, four are associated with the 28 previously proposed SNRs. Of these four, three (included in the 22 above) meet the criterion. In all, 22 of the 51 nebular objects meet the [SII]/Ha criterion as SNRs while the nature of the remaining 29 objects remains undetermined by these observations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

    Error analysis of bulk density measurements for neutron moisture gauge calibration

    Six bulk density sampling methods were evaluated for use in neutron gauge calibration. All six methods provided estimates of bulk density which were generally within 5% of bulk density profiles measured using a gamma probe. Standard errors of estimate ranged from 3 to 7 %. When used with care, downhole, coring, and drive samplers can be used to successfully measure soil moisture and bulk density profiles for use in neutron probe calibration

    Several methods for obtaining soil samples for determining soil water content were used for field calibration of neutron gauges. This paper compares the results of calibration curves obtained from the study data by comparing intercepts, slopes and correlation coefficients ("r" values). The study found differences in characteristics between gauges of the same brand, differences between brands and a great effect by access tube materials on the calibration curve
