Anti-aliasing with stratified B-spline filters of arbitrary degree
A simple and elegant method is presented to perform anti-aliasing in raytraced images. The method uses stratified
sampling to reduce the occurrence of artefacts in an image and features a B-spline filter to compute the final
luminous intensity at each pixel. The method is scalable through the specification of the filter degree. A B-spline
filter of degree one amounts to a simple anti-aliasing scheme with box filtering. Increasing the degree of the B-spline generates progressively smoother filters. Computation of the filter values is done in a recursive way, as part of a sequence of Newton-Raphson iterations, to obtain the optimal sample positions in screen space. The proposed method can perform both anti-aliasing in space and in time, the latter being more commonly known as motion blur. We show an application of the method to the ray casting of implicit procedural surfaces

Asymptotic enumeration of incidence matrices
We discuss the problem of counting {\em incidence matrices}, i.e. zero-one
matrices with no zero rows or columns. Using different approaches we give three
different proofs for the leading asymptotics for the number of matrices with
ones as . We also give refined results for the asymptotic

Association of early and late maternal smoking during pregnancy with offspring body mass index at 4 to 5 years of age
The objective was to investigate the association between early and late maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring body mass index (BMI). We undertook a retrospective cohort study using linked records from the Women's and Children's Health Network in South Australia. Among a cohort of women delivering a singleton, live-born infants between January 2000 and December 2005 (n=7658), 5961 reported not smoking during pregnancy, 297 reported quitting smoking during the first trimester of pregnancy, and 1400 reported continued smoking throughout pregnancy. Trained nurses measured the height and weight of the children at preschool visits in a state-wide surveillance programme. The main outcome measure was age- and sex-specific BMI z-score. At 4 to 5 years, mean (s.d.) BMI z-score was 0.40 (1.05), 0.60 (1.07) and 0.65 (1.18) in children of mothers who reported never smoking, quitting smoking and continued smoking during pregnancy, respectively. Compared with the group of non-smokers, both quitting smoking and continued smoking were associated with an increase in child BMI z-score of 0.15 (95% confidence interval: 0.01-0.29) and 0.21 (0.13-0.29), respectively. A significant dose-response relationship was also observed between the number of cigarettes smoked per day on average during the second half of pregnancy and the increase in offspring BMI z-score (P<0.001). Competing types of quantum oscillations in the 2D organic conductor (BEDT-TTF)8Hg4Cl12(C6H5Cl)2
Interlayer magnetoconductance of the quasi-two dimensional organic metal
(BEDT-TTF)8Hg4Cl12(C6H5Cl)2 has been investigated in pulsed magnetic fields
extending up to 36 T and in the temperature range from 1.6 to 15 K. A complex
oscillatory spectrum, built on linear combinations of three basic frequencies
only is observed. These basic frequencies arise from the compensated closed
hole and electron orbits and from the two orbits located in between. The field
and temperature dependencies of the amplitude of the various oscillation series
are studied within the framework of the coupled orbits model of Falicov and
Stachowiak. This analysis reveals that these series result from the
contribution of either conventional Shubnikov-de Haas effect (SdH) or quantum
interference (QI), both of them being induced by magnetic breakthrough.
Nevertheless, discrepancies between experimental and calculated parameters
indicate that these phenomena alone cannot account for all of the data. Due to
its low effective mass, one of the QI oscillation series - which corresponds to
the whole first Brillouin zone area - is clearly observed up to 13 K.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev.
SPRITE and ASSAM: web servers for side chain 3D-motif searching in protein structures
Similarities in the 3D patterns of amino acid side chains can provide insights into their function despite the absence of any detectable sequence or fold similarities. Search for protein sites (SPRITE) and amino acid pattern search for substructures and motifs (ASSAM) are graph theoretical programs that can search for 3D amino side chain matches in protein structures, by representing the amino acid side chains as pseudo-atoms. The geometric relationship of the pseudo-atoms to each other as a pattern can be represented as a labeled graph where the pseudo-atoms are the graph's nodes while the edges are the inter-pseudo-atomic distances. Both programs require the input file to be in the PDB format. The objective of using SPRITE is to identify matches of side chains in a query structure to patterns with characterized function. In contrast, a 3D pattern of interest can be searched for existing occurrences in available PDB structures using ASSAM. Both programs are freely accessible without any login requirement. SPT0346-52: Negligible AGN Activity in a Compact, Hyper-starburst Galaxy at z = 5.7
We present Chandra ACIS-S and ATCA radio continuum observations of the
strongly lensed dusty, star-forming galaxy SPT-S J034640-5204.9 (hereafter
SPT0346-52) at = 5.656. This galaxy has also been observed with ALMA, HST,
Spitzer, Herschel, APEX, and the VLT. Previous observations indicate that if
the infrared (IR) emission is driven by star formation, then the inferred
lensing-corrected star formation rate ( 4500 M_{\sun} yr) and
star formation rate surface density ( 2000 M_{\sun}
{yr^{-1}} {kpc^{-2}}) are both exceptionally high. It remained unclear from
the previous data, however, whether a central active galactic nucleus (AGN)
contributes appreciably to the IR luminosity. The {\it Chandra} upper limit
shows that SPT0346-52 is consistent with being star-formation dominated in the
X-ray, and any AGN contribution to the IR emission is negligible. The ATCA
radio continuum upper limits are also consistent with the FIR-to-radio
correlation for star-forming galaxies with no indication of an additional AGN
contribution. The observed prodigious intrinsic IR luminosity of (3.6
0.3) 10 L_{\sun} originates almost solely from vigorous star
formation activity. With an intrinsic source size of 0.61 0.03 kpc,
SPT0346-52 is confirmed to have one of the highest of any known
galaxy. This high , which approaches the Eddington limit for a
radiation pressure supported starburst, may be explained by a combination of

Enhancement of de Haas-van Alphen Oscillation due to Spin in the Magnetic Breakdown System
The effects of the Zeeman term on the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation is
studied in the magnetic breakdown system. We find that the amplitude of the
oscillation with the frequencies of and are enhanced by the Zeeman term, while they are expected to be
reduced in the semiclassical theory. A possible interpretation of the
