Impact of Power Allocation and Antenna Directivity in the Capacity of a Multiuser Cognitive Ad Hoc Network
This paper studies the benefits that power control and antenna directivity can bring to the capacity of a multiuser cognitive radio network. The main objective is to optimize the secondary network sum rate under the capacity constraint of the primary network. Exploiting location awareness, antenna directivity, and the power control capability, the cognitive radio ad hoc network can broaden its coverage and improve capacity. Computer simulations show that by employing the proposed method the system performance is significantly enhanced compared to conventional fixed power allocation
Computing confidence intervals for output oriented DEA models: an application to agricultural research in Brazil.
We define and model the research production at Embrapa, the major Brazilian institution responsable for applied agricultural research. The main theoretical framework is Data Envelopment Analysis - DEA. We explore the economic interpretation and the statistical properties of these models to compute confidence intervals for output oriented efficiency measurements, based on a parametric flexible model, defined by the truncated normal distribution. These results provide a better insight on the efficiency classification and allow comparison among the DMUs involved int ehe evaluation process taking into account inefficiency random variation
de Broglie-Proca and Bopp-Podolsky massive photon gases in cosmology
We investigate the influence of massive photons on the evolution of the
expanding universe. Two particular models for generalized electrodynamics are
considered, namely de Broglie-Proca and Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. We
obtain the equation of state (EOS) for each case using
dispersion relations derived from both theories. The EOS are inputted into the
Friedmann equations of a homogeneous and isotropic space-time to determine the
cosmic scale factor . It is shown that the photon non-null mass does not
significantly alter the result valid for a massless photon
gas; this is true either in de Broglie-Proca's case (where the photon mass
is extremely small) or in Bopp-Podolsky theory (for which is extremely
large).Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; v2 matches the published versio

Reentrant valence transition in EuO at high pressures: beyond the bond-valence model
The pressure-dependent relation between Eu valence and lattice structure in
model compound EuO is studied with synchrotron-based x-ray spectroscopic and
diffraction techniques. Contrary to expectation, a 7% volume collapse at
45 GPa is accompanied by a reentrant Eu valence transition into a
\emph{lower} valence state. In addition to highlighting the need for probing
both structure and electronic states directly when valence information is
sought in mixed-valent systems, the results also show that widely used
bond-valence methods fail to quantitatively describe the complex electronic
valence behavior of EuO under pressure.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Phantoms for diffusion-weighted imaging and diffusion tensor imaging quality control: a review and new perspectives
FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQIntroduction: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) combine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques and diffusion measures. In DWI, the contrast is defined by microscopic motion of water protons. Nowadays, DWI has become important for early diagnostic of acute stroke. DTI images are calculated from DWI images acquired in at least six directions, which give information of diffusion directionality, making it possible to reconstruct axonal or muscle fiber images. Both techniques have been applied to study body structures in healthy and pathological conditions. Currently, it is known that these images and derived parameters are quite sensitive to factors related to acquisition and processing. Magnetic field inhomogeneity, susceptibility, chemical shift, radiofrequency (RF) interference, eddy currents and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can have a more harmful effect in diffusion data than in T1- or T2-weighted image data. However, even today there are not reference phantoms and guidelines for DWI or DTI quality control (QC). Review: Proposals for construction and use of DWI and DTI QC phantoms can be found in literature. DWI have been evaluated using containers filled by gel or liquid with tissue-like MRI properties, as well as using microfabricated devices. DTI acquisitions also have been checked with these devices or using natural or artificial fiber structures. The head phantom from American College of Radiology (ACR) is also pointed out as an alternative for DTI QC. This article brings a discussion about proposed DWI and DTI phantoms, challenges involved and future perspectives for standardization of DWI and DTI QC.332156165FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ2013/07559-3310860/2014-
Generalized entropy arising from a distribution of q-indices
It is by now well known that the Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) entropy
can be usefully generalized into the
entropy (). Microscopic dynamics determines, given classes of initial
conditions, the occupation of the accessible phase space (or of a
symmetry-determined nonzero-measure part of it), which in turn appears to
determine the entropic form to be used. This occupation might be a uniform one
(the usual {\it equal probability hypothesis} of BG statistical mechanics),
which corresponds to ; it might be a free-scale occupancy, which appears
to correspond to . Since occupancies of phase space more complex than
these are surely possible in both natural and artificial systems, the task of
further generalizing the entropy appears as a desirable one, and has in fact
been already undertaken in the literature. To illustrate the approach, we
introduce here a quite general entropy based on a distribution of -indices
thus generalizing . We establish some general mathematical properties for
the new entropic functional and explore some examples. We also exhibit a
procedure for finding, given any entropic functional, the -indices
distribution that produces it. Finally, on the road to establishing a quite
general statistical mechanics, we briefly address possible generalized
constraints under which the present entropy could be extremized, in order to
produce canonical-ensemble-like stationary-state distributions for Hamiltonian
systems.Comment: 14 pages including 3 figure
