Surgical procedures for primary, metastatic or adjacent parotid tumours

Objective: The retrospective analysis of the surgical procedures in primary parotid and metastatic or adjacent parotid tumors. Patients and Methods: Retrospective review of the records of 145 patients operated on for primary, metastatic or adjacent parotid tumors revealed 85 patients with benign tumors, 24 with primary malignant tumors, 19 with squamous skin carcinomas, 12 with skin melanomas, 3 with basocellular carcinomas and 2 with sarcomas of the parotid region. The analysis included the type of parotidectomy, the need for facial nerve sacrifice (FNS), type of neck dissection and soft part reconstruction. Results: Superficial parotidectomy was performed in 81% of the benign parotid tumors and 100% of skin melanomas. Total parotidectomy was frequent in malignant parotid tumors (62%), epidermoid skin tumors (64%) and in basocellular/sarcomas of the parotid region (80%). Skin graft or flaps was infrequent in primary malignant tumors (12.5%), and frequent in epidermoid skin tumors (74%), melanomas (58%) and basocellular/sarcomas (100%). FNS was necessary in primary malignant (25%), adjacent epidermoid (37%), melanomas (17%) and basocellular/sarcomas (80%). Details on neck dissections are provided. Conclusions: Superficial parotidectomy was an adequate procedure for most benign parotid tumors and for melanoma patients. In primary malignant and adjacent or metastatic skin tumors, total parotidectomy, neck dissection and soft part reconstruction were frequent procedures. FNS and soft part reconstruction should be anticipated more frequently in squamous/basocellular skin tumors or sarcomas adjacent to the parotid gland.84431832

Evaluation of a double-setting alpha-tricalcium phosphate cement in eviscerated rabbit eyes

Purpose: To evaluate the macroscopy, microstructure, and tissue reaction of a double-setting a-tricalcium phosphate bone cement used as an intraocular implant in rabbits. Methods: the internal and external surface of the double-setting a-tricalcium phosphate implant was analyzed macroscopically and by scanning electron microscopy. Twelve New Zealand rabbits received 12-mm implants made of double-setting alpha-tricalcium phosphate cement after unilateral evisceration. Clinical evaluation was performed daily for the first 15 days after surgery and at 15-day intervals until the end of the study period. For histopathologic analysis, 3 animals per experimental period were submitted to enucleation at 15, 45, 90, and 180 days. Results: on gross inspection, the external surface of the implant was solid, smooth, and compact. The microarchitecture was characterized by the formation of columns of hexagonal crystals with interconnecting channels forming micropores. No wound dehiscence, signs of infection, or implant extrusion were observed in any animal throughout the study period. Histologic examination revealed the formation of fibrovascular tissue surrounding the implants, and there were signs of minimal integration of the surface limiting the fibrocellular cap with the space previously occupied by the implant. Conclusions: the double-setting alpha-tricalcium phosphate implant behaved as an inert and nonintegratable material. The lack of incorporation of this material by fibrovascular tissue is related to its characteristics of compactness and high resistance

Here, we report the in vitro, in vivo and in silico anticancer and estrogen-like activity of Psidium guajava L. (guava) extracts and enriched mixture containing the meroterpenes guajadial, psidial A and psiguadial A and B. All samples were evaluated in vitro for anticancer activity against nine human cancer lines: K562 (leukemia), MCF7 (breast), NCI/ADR-RES (resistant ovarian cancer), NCI-H460 (lung), UACC-62 (melanoma), PC-3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), OVCAR-3 (ovarian) and 786-0 (kidney). Psidium guajava's active compounds displayed similar physicochemical properties to estradiol and tamoxifen, as in silico molecular docking studies demonstrated that they fit into the estrogen receptors (ERs). The meroterpene-enriched fraction was also evaluated in vivo in a Solid Ehrlich murine breast adenocarcinoma model, and showed to be highly effective in inhibiting tumor growth, also demonstrating uterus increase in comparison to negative controls. The ability of guajadial, psidial A and psiguadials A and B to reduce tumor growth and stimulate uterus proliferation, as well as their in silico docking similarity to tamoxifen, suggest that these compounds may act as Selective Estrogen Receptors Modulators (SERMs), therefore holding significant potential for anticancer therapy.212023222330Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)DAADFundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Estimativas de ganho genético por diferentes critérios de seleção em genótipos de alfafa

    No full text
