    Fauna used in popular medicine in Northeast Brazil

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Animal-based remedies constitute an integral part of Brazilian Traditional Medicine. Due to its long history, zootherapy has in fact become an integral part of folk medicine both in rural and urban areas of the country. In this paper we summarize current knowledge on zootherapeutic practices in Northeast of Brazil, based on information compiled from ethnobiological scientific literature.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to examine the diversity of animals used in traditional medicine in Northeast of Brazil, all available references or reports of folk remedies based on animals sources were examined. 34 sources were analyzed. Only taxa that could be identified to species level were included in assessment of medicinal animal species. Scientific names provided in publications were updated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The review revealed that at least 250 animal species (178 vertebrates and 72 invertebrates) are used for medicinal purposes in Northeast of Brazil. The inventoried species comprise 10 taxonomic categories and belong to 141 Families. The groups with the greatest number of species were fishes (n = 58), mammals (n = 47) and reptiles (n = 37). The zootherapeutical products are used for the treatment of different illnesses. The most widely treated condition were asthma, rheumatism and sore throat, conditions, which had a wide variety of animals to treat them with. Many animals were used for the treatment of multiple ailments. Beyond the use for treating human diseases, zootherapeutical resources are also used in ethnoveterinary medicine</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The number of medicinal species catalogued was quite expressive and demonstrate the importance of zootherapy as alternative therapeutic in Northeast of Brazil. Although widely diffused throughout Brazil, zootherapeutic practices remain virtually unstudied. There is an urgent need to examine the ecological, cultural, social, and public health implications associated with fauna usage, including a full inventory of the animal species used for medicinal purposes and the socio-cultural context associated with their consumption.</p

    The ethnocategory ''insect'' in the conception of the inhabitants of Tapera County, São Gonçalo dos Campos, Bahia, Brazil

    This article deals with the construction of the "insect" ethnozoological dominium by the inhabitants of Tapera County, which is located in the municipality of São Gonçalo dos Campos, Bahia State. Data were obtained from March to May 2005 through open-ended interviews carried out with 23 men and 8 women, whose ages ranged from 6 to 66 years old. Interviewees were asked about how they perceived and defined the animals considered as "insects", which types they knew, and if they used them as food resource. Most of the interviews were tape-recorded, and semi-literal transcriptions are kept at the Ethnobiology Laboratoty of the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. Considering the ethnozoological classification system of the inhabitants of Tapera, the term "insect" is a broad semantic category that brings together animals of different and not systematically related taxonomic groups. Apparently, these animals are culturally perceived and categorized as "insects" because they are usually considered as noxious, disgusting, and disease carrier creatures. True insects can be excluded from this ethnocategory due to the perception people have that such animals do not cause "injuries" or because they are useful. Perceptions toward these animals imply ambiguous behavior and feelings, which range from more positive attitudes (conservative) to more negative (destructive).Este artigo discute a construção do domínio etnozoológico ''inseto'' pelos moradores do povoado de Tapera, localizado no município de São Gonçalo dos Campos, estado da Bahia. Os dados foram obtidos no período de março a maio de 2005 por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas realizadas com 23 homens e 8 mulheres, cujas idades variaram de 6 a 66 anos. Os entrevistados foram questionados sobre como percebiam e definiam os animais considerados ''insetos'', quais os tipos que conheciam e se usavam esses animais como fonte alimentar. A maioria das entrevistas foi registrada em micro-fitas; transcrições semi-literais estão no Laboratório de Etnobiologia da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. Considerando o sistema de classificação etnozoológico dos moradores de Tapera, o termo ''inseto'' é uma categoria semântica ampla que reúne animais de diferentes grupos taxonômicas não sistematicamente relacionados. Aparentemente, esses animais são culturalmente percebidos e categorizados como ''insetos'' porque geralmente são tidos como nocivos, nojentos e transmissores de doenças. Os insetos verdadeiros podem ser excluídos da etnocategoria devido à percepção que as pessoas têm de que esses animais não causam danos ou são úteis. As percepções com relação a esses animais implicam comportamento e sentimentos ambíguos que variam de atitudes mais positivas (conservadora) a atitudes mais negativas (destrutiva)

    Coral reefs are quite diverse ecosystems that carry out several ecological functions and plays a relevant socioeconomic role. The artisan fishing of octopi (Octopus spp.) is practiced for the survival of part of the inhabitants of Coroa Vermelha community, in the south of the state of Bahia. We intended to study the knowledge of the octopi fishermen of Coroa Vermelha using the comprehensive ethnoecological proposal of Marques. The data were collected between July, 2006 and April, 2008 through direct observation and from interviews with fishermen met by chance and through the "native specialists" criterion. Twenty semi-structured interviews were carried out following an itinerary of pre-established questions about the activity of octopi capture, and the biological and ecological aspects of the resource. The data showed that the fishermen have knowledge about biological and ecological aspects of the octopi. Two capture techniques are used: octopus fishing (polvejamento) in the reefs and through diving. Two specific folk are recognized: the "normal octopus" (Octopus insularis) and the "east octopus" (Octopus macropus (?)).     Este trabalho analisa o sistema zooterápico tradicional de uma população afrodescendente na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia. A pesquisa foi conduzida ao longo de oito meses de trabalho nos quais foram realizadas entrevistas livres e semi-estruturadas, registro fotográfico e identificação de espécies. Busca-se, além da apresentação de uma lista de produtos oriundos de animais e seus respectivos usos, iniciar uma discussão sobre as possíveis razões para crença no potencial terapêutico ou profilático das frações e produtos animais amplamente utilizados na medicina tradicional de populações brasileiras.<br>This study examines the traditional therapeutic use of animals or parts of animals by an Afro Brazilian population living in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil. The investigation was conducted over a period of eight months and consisted of open- and semi-structured interviews, photographic documentation and identification of species. Besides presenting a list of animal products and their respective use, we seek to stimulate a discussion about the possible existence of a rational basis for the belief in the therapeutic or prophylactic potential of the animal products used in the traditional medicine of Brazilian populations
