A Complexity Science Based Approach to Programme Risk Management
Programme management has rapidly gained acceptance as a vehicle for achieving organisational strategic objectives and as a means of aligning projects with the overall strategy of the organisation. Managing programme risk poses challenges which are different from those in project management. Attempts to modify and apply project risk management techniques to programme risk management have experienced difficulties. The implications of the challenges of programme risk management extend beyond the tools and techniques. Recent research shows that that programme management is neither an extension, nor a scaled up version of project management. Philosophically, a paradigm shift from the predominantly mechanistic and reductionist mindset to a more appropriate paradigm based on complexity science and the theory of complex adaptive systems is required. This leads to the conclusion that the classic event based view of risk is inappropriate in modelling and analysing programme risk which need to be treated as holistic and dynamic

Open Science Happens Somewhere: Exploring the use of Science OER in Schools
This paper concerns a pilot exploring the use of openly licensed content in secondary schools. Specifically it looks at the use of the Open University’s (OU) OpenScienceLab (OSL) in two remote rural schools in the West Highlands of Scotland. OSL is a series of online experiments openly licensed for anyone to use, they are about learning through experimentation, and are part of a wider OU interest in how to support and develop inquiry based learning at a distance (Scanlon 2012). This area is of particular relevance to Scottish schools, as the underlying pedagogy of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) promotes interdisciplinary thinking and learning through inquiry (Macintyre 2014).
The idea of the pilot was to work on how “open content” might be used in schools to understand what openness might mean in and for educational practice. While our initial intention was simply to run these in schools after the first workshops it became apparent while the technical and licences were open and it was relatively clear how to do the experiments, people were uncertain how to use them in their educational practice. Emphasising the need to attend to Educational Practice as well as Openness in OEP.
The pilot took a participatory design approach (Sanders and Westerlund 2011; Mor et.al 2012), to developing and support practices around the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in classroom. Through a series of workshops and schools visits we looked to solve these problems from the classroom out, using the teachers experience to develop learning journeys that worked for teachers and pupils. With teachers we created a learning journey using the OU’s free platform OpenLearnWorks to wrap the experiments in a mixture of existing and newly developed OER.
Two journeys were created, these will be run in two locations with with two sets of teachers in December 2014. The paper will report on the outcomes for pupils and teachers of this final stage. In doing so it will reflect on the participatory design process, highlighting the practices developed to support the use of open content, drawing out broader conclusions might support the use open materials in the classroom
Semantic Web meets Web 2.0 (and vice versa): The Value of the Mundane for the Semantic Web
Web 2.0, not the Semantic Web, has become the face of “the next generation Web” among the tech-literate set, and even among many in the various research communities involved in the Web. Perceptions in these communities of what the Semantic Web is (and who is involved in it) are often misinformed if not misguided. In this paper we identify opportunities for Semantic Web activities to connect with the Web 2.0 community; we explore why this connection is of significant benefit to both groups, and identify how these connections open valuable research opportunities “in the real” for the Semantic Web effort
Halite and stable chlorine isotopes in the Zag H3-6 breccia
Zag is an H3-6 chondrite regolith breccia within which we have studied 14 halite grains ?3mm. The purity of the associated NaCl-H2O brine is implied by freezing characteristics of fluid inclusions in the halite and EPMA analyses together with a lack of other evaporite-like phases in the Zag H3-6 component. This is inconsistent with multistage evolution of the fluid involving scavenging of cations in the Zag region of the parent body. We suggest that the halite grains are clastic and did not crystallise in situ. Halite and water-soluble extracts from Zag have light Cl isotopic compositions, ?37-Cl = -1.4 to '2.8 �. Previously reported bulk carbonaceous chondrite values are approximately ?37-Cl = +3 to +4 �. This difference is too great to be the result of fractionation during evaporation and instead we suggest that Cl isotopes in chondrites are fractionated between a light reservoir associated with fluids and a heavier reservoir associated with higher temperature phases such as phosphates and silicates. Extraterrestrial carbon released at 600 degrees Celsius from the H3-4 matrix has ?13-C = -20 �, consistent with poorly graphitised material being introduced into the matrix rather than indigenous carbonate derived from a brine. We have also examined 28 other H-chondrite falls in order to ascertain how widespread halite or evaporite-like mineral assemblages are in ordinary chondrites. We did not find any more to add to Zag (H3-6) and Monahans (H5), which suggests that such highly soluble phases were not usually preserved on the parent bodies
Review of the solar array telescopes
International audienceFor several years the only experiments sensitive to astrophysical gamma rays with energies beyond the reach of EGRET but below that the Cherenkov imaging telescopes have been the "solar towar" detectors. They use > 2000 m mirror areas to sample the Cherenkov wavefront generated by <100 GeV gamma rays, obtained Crab sensitivities of more than 6 in one ON-source hour. I will review the history of the solar tower Cherenkov experiments from 1992 to the present and their key design features. I will describe some successful analysis strategies, then summarize the principal results obtained

Fabrication of a single mode laser by UV-writing in neodymium doped silica-on-silicon
We describe the fabrication of a waveguide laser by UV-writing in neodymium doped silica-on-silicon. The substrate is fabricated by Flame Hydrolysis Deposition and solution doping techniques. Lasing at 1048-1056nm was observed with a slope efficiency of 33% and threshold of 4mW for the transition. Lasing was also observed at 1356nm
Integrating musicology's heterogeneous data sources for better exploration
Musicologists have to consult an extraordinarily heterogeneous body of primary and secondary sources during all stages of their research. Many of these sources are now available online, but the historical dispersal of material across libraries and archives has now been replaced by segregation of data and metadata into a plethora of online repositories. This segregation hinders the intelligent manipulation of metadata, and means that extracting large tranches of basic factual information or running multi-part search queries is still enormously and needlessly time consuming. To counter this barrier to research, the “musicSpace” project is experimenting with integrating access to many of musicology’s leading data sources via a modern faceted browsing interface that utilises Semantic Web and Web2.0 technologies such as RDF and AJAX. This will make previously intractable search queries tractable, enable musicologists to use their time more efficiently, and aid the discovery of potentially significant information that users did not think to look for. Experimental analysis of dynamic charge acceptance test conditions for lead-acid cells
© 2016 IEEE.This paper presents the results of a series of tests to determine the Dynamic Charge Acceptance (DCA) performance of small form-factor 2 V, 6 Ah, carbon-enhanced VRLA cells designed for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications. A test procedure has been written for a battery test system, based on a modified DCA Short Test profile. Results have been obtained for a batch of cells, tested at various temperatures, rest periods and states of charge. These conditions have been chosen to mimic a range of real-life scenarios which could potentially be encountered during HEV operation. The resulting analysis demonstrates clear variations and trends in DCA performance which may be used to inform conditions for future testing regimes. The same test procedure is then applied to standard lead-acid cells and the results compared
