On the complexity of color-avoiding site and bond percolation
The mathematical analysis of robustness and error-tolerance of complex
networks has been in the center of research interest. On the other hand, little
work has been done when the attack-tolerance of the vertices or edges are not
independent but certain classes of vertices or edges share a mutual
vulnerability. In this study, we consider a graph and we assign colors to the
vertices or edges, where the color-classes correspond to the shared
vulnerabilities. An important problem is to find robustly connected vertex
sets: nodes that remain connected to each other by paths providing any type of
error (i.e. erasing any vertices or edges of the given color). This is also
known as color-avoiding percolation. In this paper, we study various possible
modeling approaches of shared vulnerabilities, we analyze the computational
complexity of finding the robustly (color-avoiding) connected components. We
find that the presented approaches differ significantly regarding their

Effects of Contact Network Models on Stochastic Epidemic Simulations
The importance of modeling the spread of epidemics through a population has
led to the development of mathematical models for infectious disease
propagation. A number of empirical studies have collected and analyzed data on
contacts between individuals using a variety of sensors. Typically one uses
such data to fit a probabilistic model of network contacts over which a disease
may propagate. In this paper, we investigate the effects of different contact
network models with varying levels of complexity on the outcomes of simulated
epidemics using a stochastic Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model. We
evaluate these network models on six datasets of contacts between people in a
variety of settings. Our results demonstrate that the choice of network model
can have a significant effect on how closely the outcomes of an epidemic
simulation on a simulated network match the outcomes on the actual network
constructed from the sensor data. In particular, preserving degrees of nodes
appears to be much more important than preserving cluster structure for

Impact of Investor's Varying Risk Aversion on the Dynamics of Asset Price Fluctuations
While the investors' responses to price changes and their price forecasts are
well accepted major factors contributing to large price fluctuations in
financial markets, our study shows that investors' heterogeneous and dynamic
risk aversion (DRA) preferences may play a more critical role in the dynamics
of asset price fluctuations. We propose and study a model of an artificial
stock market consisting of heterogeneous agents with DRA, and we find that DRA
is the main driving force for excess price fluctuations and the associated
volatility clustering. We employ a popular power utility function,
with agent specific and
time-dependent risk aversion index, , and we derive an approximate
formula for the demand function and aggregate price setting equation. The
dynamics of each agent's risk aversion index, (i=1,2,...,N), is
modeled by a bounded random walk with a constant variance . We show
numerically that our model reproduces most of the ``stylized'' facts observed
in the real data, suggesting that dynamic risk aversion is a key mechanism for

Modeling Bacterial DNA: Simulation of Self-avoiding Supercoiled Worm-Like Chains Including Structural Transitions of the Helix
Under supercoiling constraints, naked DNA, such as a large part of bacterial
DNA, folds into braided structures called plectonemes. The double-helix can
also undergo local structural transitions, leading to the formation of
denaturation bubbles and other alternative structures. Various polymer models
have been developed to capture these properties, with Monte-Carlo (MC)
approaches dedicated to the inference of thermodynamic properties. In this
chapter, we explain how to perform such Monte-Carlo simulations, following two
objectives. On one hand, we present the self-avoiding supercoiled Worm-Like
Chain (ssWLC) model, which is known to capture the folding properties of
supercoiled DNA, and provide a detailed explanation of a standard MC simulation
method. On the other hand, we explain how to extend this ssWLC model to include

The developmental dynamics of terrorist organizations
We identify robust statistical patterns in the frequency and severity of
violent attacks by terrorist organizations as they grow and age. Using
group-level static and dynamic analyses of terrorist events worldwide from
1968-2008 and a simulation model of organizational dynamics, we show that the
production of violent events tends to accelerate with increasing size and
experience. This coupling of frequency, experience and size arises from a
fundamental positive feedback loop in which attacks lead to growth which leads
to increased production of new attacks. In contrast, event severity is
independent of both size and experience. Thus larger, more experienced
organizations are more deadly because they attack more frequently, not because
their attacks are more deadly, and large events are equally likely to come from
large and small organizations. These results hold across political ideologies
and time, suggesting that the frequency and severity of terrorism may be

Patterns of analgesic use, pain and self-efficacy: a cross-sectional study of patients attending a hospital rheumatology clinic
Background: Many people attending rheumatology clinics use analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories for persistent musculoskeletal pain. Guidelines for pain management recommend regular and pre-emptive use of analgesics to reduce the impact of pain. Clinical experience indicates that analgesics are often not used in this way. Studies exploring use of analgesics in arthritis have historically measured adherence to such medication. Here we examine patterns of analgesic use and their relationships to pain, self-efficacy and demographic factors.
Methods: Consecutive patients were approached in a hospital rheumatology out-patient clinic. Pattern of analgesic use was assessed by response to statements such as 'I always take my tablets every day.' Pain and self-efficacy (SE) were measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES). Influence of factors on pain level and regularity of analgesic use were investigated using linear regression. Differences in pain between those agreeing and disagreeing with statements regarding analgesic use were assessed using t-tests.
Results: 218 patients (85% of attendees) completed the study. Six (2.8%) patients reported no current pain, 26 (12.3%) slight, 100 (47.4%) moderate, 62 (29.4%) severe and 17 (8.1%) extreme pain. In multiple linear regression self efficacy and regularity of analgesic use were significant (p < 0.01) with lower self efficacy and more regular use of analgesics associated with more pain.
Low SE was associated with greater pain: 40 (41.7%) people with low SE reported severe pain versus 22 (18.3%) people with high SE, p < 0.001. Patients in greater pain were significantly more likely to take analgesics regularly; 13 (77%) of those in extreme pain reported always taking their analgesics every day, versus 9 (35%) in slight pain. Many patients, including 46% of those in severe pain, adjusted analgesic use to current pain level. In simple linear regression, pain was the only variable significantly associated with regularity of analgesic use: higher levels of pain corresponded to more regular analgesic use (p = 0.003).
Conclusion: Our study confirms that there is a strong inverse relationship between self-efficacy and pain severity. Analgesics are often used irregularly by people with arthritis, including some reporting severe pain
Emerging pharmacotherapy of tinnitus
Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of an auditory stimulus, is perceived by about 1 in 10 adults, and for at least 1 in 100, tinnitus severely affects their quality of life. Because tinnitus is frequently associated with irritability, agitation, stress, insomnia, anxiety and depression, the social and economic burdens of tinnitus can be enormous. No curative treatments are available. However, tinnitus symptoms can be alleviated to some extent. The most widespread management therapies consist of auditory stimulation and cognitive behavioral treatment, aiming at improving habituation and coping strategies. Available clinical trials vary in methodological rigor and have been performed for a considerable number of different drugs. None of the investigated drugs have demonstrated providing replicable long-term reduction of tinnitus impact in the majority of patients in excess of placebo effects. Accordingly, there are no FDA or European Medicines Agency approved drugs for the treatment of tinnitus. However, in spite of the lack of evidence, a large variety of different compounds are prescribed off-label. Therefore, more effective pharmacotherapies for this huge and still growing market are desperately needed and even a drug that produces only a small but significant effect would have an enormous therapeutic impact. This review describes current and emerging pharmacotherapies with current difficulties and limitations. In addition, it provides an estimate of the tinnitus market. Finally, it describes recent advances in the tinnitus field which may help overcome obstacles faced in the pharmacological treatment of tinnitus. These include incomplete knowledge of tinnitus pathophysiology, lack of well-established animal models, heterogeneity of different forms of tinnitus, difficulties in tinnitus assessment and outcome measurement and variability in clinical trial methodology. © 2009 Informa UK Ltd.Fil: Langguth, Berthold. Assessment of a novel, capsid-modified adenovirus with an improved vascular gene transfer profile
<p>Background: Cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery bypass graft failure and in-stent restenosis remain significant opportunities for the advancement of novel therapeutics that target neointimal hyperplasia, a characteristic of both pathologies. Gene therapy may provide a successful approach to improve the clinical outcome of these conditions, but would benefit from the development of more efficient vectors for vascular gene delivery. The aim of this study was to assess whether a novel genetically engineered Adenovirus could be utilised to produce enhanced levels of vascular gene expression.</p>
<p>Methods: Vascular transduction capacity was assessed in primary human saphenous vein smooth muscle and endothelial cells using vectors expressing the LacZ reporter gene. The therapeutic capacity of the vectors was compared by measuring smooth muscle cell metabolic activity and migration following infection with vectors that over-express the candidate therapeutic gene tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP-3).</p>
<p>Results: Compared to Adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5), the novel vector Ad5T*F35++ demonstrated improved binding and transduction of human vascular cells. Ad5T*F35++ mediated expression of TIMP-3 reduced smooth muscle cell metabolic activity and migration in vitro. We also demonstrated that in human serum samples pre-existing neutralising antibodies to Ad5T*F35++ were less prevalent than Ad5 neutralising antibodies.</p>
<p>Conclusions: We have developed a novel vector with improved vascular transduction and improved resistance to human serum neutralisation. This may provide a novel vector platform for human vascular gene transfer.</p>
