    A review of abnormalities in the perception of visual illusions in schizophrenia

    Specific abnormalities of vision in schizophrenia have been observed to affect high-level and some low-level integration mechanisms, suggesting that people with schizophrenia may experience anomalies across different stages in the visual system affecting either early or late processing or both. Here, we review the research into visual illusion perception in schizophrenia and the issues which previous research has faced. One general finding that emerged from the literature is that those with schizophrenia are mostly immune to the effects of high-level illusory displays, but this effect is not consistent across all low-level illusions. The present review suggests that this resistance is due to the weakening of top–down perceptual mechanisms and may be relevant to the understanding of symptoms of visual distortion rather than hallucinations as previously thought

    The Streptococcus pneumoniae Pilus-1 Displays a Biphasic Expression Pattern

    The Streptococcus pneumoniae pilus-1 is encoded by pilus islet 1 (PI-1), which has three clonal variants (clade I, II and III) and is present in about 30% of clinical pneumococcal isolates. In vitro and in vivo assays have demonstrated that pilus-1 is involved in attachment to epithelial cells and virulence, as well as protection in mouse models of infection. Several reports suggest that pilus-1 expression is tightly regulated and involves the interplay of numerous genetic regulators, including the PI-1 positive regulator RlrA. In this report we provide evidence that pilus expression, when analyzed at the single-cell level in PI-1 positive strains, is biphasic. In fact, the strains present two phenotypically different sub-populations of bacteria, one that expresses the pilus, while the other does not. The proportions of these two phenotypes are variable among the strains tested and are not influenced by genotype, serotype, growth conditions, colony morphology or by the presence of antibodies directed toward the pilus components. Two sub-populations, enriched in pilus expressing or not expressing bacteria were obtained by means of colony selection and immuno-detection methods for five strains. PI-1 sequencing in the two sub-populations revealed the absence of mutations, thus indicating that the biphasic expression observed is not due to a genetic modification within PI-1. Microarray expression profile and western blot analyses on whole bacterial lysates performed comparing the two enriched sub-populations, revealed that pilus expression is regulated at the transcriptional level (on/off regulation), and that there are no other genes, in addition to those encoded by PI-1, concurrently regulated across the strains tested. Finally, we provide evidence that the over-expression of the RrlA positive regulator is sufficient to induce pilus expression in pilus-1 negative bacteria. Overall, the data presented here suggest that the observed biphasic pilus expression phenotype could be an example of bistability in pneumococcus

    Advancing a Conceptual Model of Evidence-Based Practice Implementation in Public Service Sectors

    Implementation science is a quickly growing discipline. Lessons learned from business and medical settings are being applied but it is unclear how well they translate to settings with different historical origins and customs (e.g., public mental health, social service, alcohol/drug sectors). The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-level, four phase model of the implementation process (i.e., Exploration, Adoption/Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment), derived from extant literature, and apply it to public sector services. We highlight features of the model likely to be particularly important in each phase, while considering the outer and inner contexts (i.e., levels) of public sector service systems

    Does trust play a role when it comes to donations? A comparison of Italian and US higher education institutions

    Higher education institutions (HEIs) have experienced severe cutbacks in funding over the past few years, with universities examining options for alternative funding streams, such as alumni funding. Identifying the factors influencing their alumni's intentions to invest in their alma mater can be of significant importance when establishing a sustainable revenue stream. Within this context, empirical research on the potential role of trust is scarce. This paper aims to deepen the analysis of the relationship between alumni trust and engagement as well as three outcomes, namely support, commitment, and attitude toward donation. A structural equation model was tested on two samples of US ( Β =Β 318) and Italian ( Β =Β 314) alumni. Although both countries are affluent and developed countries, the USA has an established tradition of alumni donations, which is not such a developed practice in Italy. For both countries, results confirm that engagement is an antecedent of trust, which in turn leads to the three investigated outcomes (support, commitment, and attitude toward donations). In contrast, the effect of commitment on attitude toward donations is significant only for the USA universities. The paper has interesting theoretical and managerial implications. From a theoretical point of view, the study aims to address a gap concerning the role of trust in the HE context. Managerially, the study has significant implications for universities that want to change alumni attitude toward donations. [Abstract copyright: Β© Springer Nature B.V. 2020.

    Parents and children with cerebral palsy discuss communication needs in hospital

    Objective: The aim of this study was to understand the communication needs and experiences of parents and children with cerebral palsy (CP) and complex communication needs (CCN) in hospital. Methods: Focus groups with 10 parents and interviews with seven children with CP and CCN were analysed for content themes. Results: Results demonstrated that children often want to communicate directly with hospital staff to: gain attention, answer yes/no, convey basic physical needs, give and receive information, control their environment and participate in preferred activities. Barriers to communication included lack of access to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), staff preferring to communicate with parents and lack of time to communicate. Conclusions: Results highlight strategies for successful communication, the role of the parents in supporting communication and provision of AAC systems for children in hospital. Policy and practice implications in the preparation of children with CP and CCN for communication in hospital are discussed

    Primary culture of neural cells isolated from the cerebellum of newborn and adult mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIA mice

    The original publication can be found at www.springerlink.comIn order to evaluate the mechanisms leading to neuropathology in Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIA (MPS-IIIA, Sanfilippo syndrome), we have harvested and cultured primary neural cells isolated from the cerebellum of newborn and adult MPS-IIIA and unaffected mice. Cell viability and plating efficiency were comparable for brain tissue obtained from either newborn or adult MPS-IIIA and unaffected mice. Cultures (newborn and adult) comprised a mixed brain cell population including astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons. Newborn MPS-IIIA cells contained inclusions and vacuoles consistent with the pathology present in affected brain tissue. Newborn and adult MPS-IIIA brain cells had approximately 5–7% of the sulfamidase activity present in primary neural cells cultured from unaffected newborn and adult mice. In addition, high levels of glucosamine-N-sulfate[Ξ±-1,4]hexuronic acid, a heparan sulfate-derived disaccharide, were detected in both newborn and adult MPS-IIIA brain cells. These results suggest that the primary MPS-IIIA brain cells exhibit characteristics of MPS-IIIA phenotype at the histopathological and biochemical level in culture.L. M. Sutherland, K. M.
