Does Faux Pas Detection in Adult Autism Reflect Differences in Social Cognition or Decision-Making Abilities?
43 typically-developed adults and 35 adults with ASD performed a cartoon faux pas test. Adults with ASD apparently over-detected faux pas despite good comprehension abilities, and were generally slower at responding. Signal detection analysis demonstrated that the ASD participants had significantly greater difficulty detecting whether a cartoon depicted a faux pas and showed a liberal response bias. Test item analysis demonstrated that the ASD group were not in agreement with a reference control group (n = 69) about which non-faux pas items were most difficult. These results suggest that the participants with ASD had a primary problem with faux pas detection, but that there is another factor at work, possibly compensatory, that relates to their choice of a liberal response criterion
Correlation Functions of Large N Chern-Simons-Matter Theories and Bosonization in Three Dimensions
We consider the conformal field theory of N complex massless scalars in 2+1
dimensions, coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k. This theory has a
't Hooft large N limit, keeping fixed \lambda = N/k. We compute some
correlation functions in this theory exactly as a function of \lambda, in the
large N (planar) limit. We show that the results match with the general
predictions of Maldacena and Zhiboedov for the correlators of theories that
have high-spin symmetries in the large N limit. It has been suggested in the
past that this theory is dual (in the large N limit) to the Legendre transform
of the theory of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field, and our
results allow us to find the precise mapping between the two theories. We find
that in the large N limit the theory of N scalars coupled to a U(N)_k
Chern-Simons theory is equivalent to the Legendre transform of the theory of k
fermions coupled to a U(k)_N Chern-Simons theory, thus providing a bosonization
of the latter theory. We conjecture that perhaps this duality is valid also for
finite values of N and k, where on the fermionic side we should now have (for
N_f flavors) a U(k)_{N-N_f/2} theory. Similar results hold for real scalars
(fermions) coupled to the O(N)_k Chern-Simons theory.Comment: 49 pages, 16 figures. v2: added reference
Soft branes in supersymmetry-breaking backgrounds
We revisit the analysis of effective field theories resulting from
non-supersymmetric perturbations to supersymmetric flux compactifications of
the type-IIB superstring with an eye towards those resulting from the
backreaction of a small number of anti-D3-branes. Independently of the
background, we show that the low-energy Lagrangian describing the fluctuations
of a stack of probe D3-branes exhibits soft supersymmetry breaking, despite
perturbations to marginal operators that were not fully considered in some
previous treatments. We take this as an indication that the breaking of
supersymmetry by anti-D3-branes or other sources may be spontaneous rather than
explicit. In support of this, we consider the action of an anti-D3-brane
probing an otherwise supersymmetric configuration and identify a candidate for
the corresponding goldstino.Comment: 36+5 pages. References added, minor typos correcte

Cardiovascular Risk Factors Associated With Venous Thromboembolism
Importance It is uncertain to what extent established cardiovascular risk factors are associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Objective To estimate associations between major cardiovascular risk factors and VTE, i.e., deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Design Analysis of individual-participant data from the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration (ERFC; 731,728 participants; 75 cohorts; latest date of follow-up 2015), and UK Biobank (UKBB; 421,537 participants; latest date of follow-up 2016). Setting Approximately population-based prospective cohort studies. Participants Individuals without cardiovascular disease at baseline. Exposures A panel of several established cardiovascular risk factors. Main Outcomes and Measures Hazard ratios (HRs) per 1-SD higher risk factor levels (or presence/absence). Incident fatal outcomes in ERFC (n=1041 VTE, n=25,131 CHD) and incident fatal/non-fatal outcomes in UKBB (n=2321 VTE, n=3385 CHD). HRs were adjusted for age, sex, smoking status, diabetes mellitus, and body-mass index. Results Adjusted HRs for VTE were: 2.67 (2.45-2.91) in ERFC and 1.81 (1.71-1.92) in UKBB per decade older age; 1.38 (1.20-1.58) in ERFC and 1.23 (1.08-1.40) in UKBB with smoking; 1.43 (1.35-1.50) in ERFC and 1.37 (1.32-1.41) in UKBB per 1-SD higher body-mass index; and 0.75 (0.61-0.93) in ERFC and 0.82 (0.71-0.94) in UKBB with current alcohol consumption. For the preceding factors, there were similar HRs for pulmonary embolism versus deep vein thrombosis in UKBB (except adiposity was more strongly associated with PE; P<0.01), and similar HRs for unprovoked versus provoked VTE. Apart from adiposity, these risk factors were less strongly associated with VTE than coronary heart disease. We noted inconsistent associations with diabetes and blood pressure for VTEs across ERFC and UKBB, and had limited ability to study lipid and inflammation markers. Conclusions and Relevance Older age, smoking, adiposity, and lower alcohol consumption were consistently associated with higher VTE risk.A study website (http://www.phpc.cam.ac.uk/ceu/erfc/list-of-studies/) includes a list that investigators have provided of funding agencies that have supported individual cohorts in the ERFC contributing to the present consortium. Adenosine Deaminase Activity Is a Sensitive Marker for the Diagnosis of Tuberculous Pleuritis in Patients with Very Low CD4 Counts
Background: Adenosine Deaminase Activity (ADA) is a commonly used marker for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion. There has been concern about its usefulness in immunocompromised patients, especially HIV positive patients with very low CD4 counts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of ADA in pleural fluid in patients with low CD4 counts. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective case control study. Medical files of patients with tuberculous pleuritis and non-tuberculous pleuritis were reviewed. Clinical characteristics, CD4 cell counts in blood and biochemical markers in pleural fluid, including ADA were recorded. Results: One ninety seven tuberculous pleuritis and 40 non- tuberculous pleuritis patients were evaluated. Using the cut-off value of 30 U/L, the overall sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio of ADA was 94%, 95%, 19, and 0.06 respectively. The mean CD4 cell counts among TB pleuritis patients was 29 and 153 cells/microL in patients with CD4 ,50 cells/microL and .50 cells/microL, (p,0.05) respectively. The corresponding mean ADA values for these patients were 76 U/L and 72 U/L respectively (p.0.5). There was no correlation between ADA values and CD4 cell counts (r =20.120, p = 0.369). Conclusion: ADA analysis is a sensitive marker of tuberculous pleuritis even in HIV patients with very low CD4 counts in a high TB endemic region. The ADA assay is inexpensive, rapid, and simple to perform and is of great value for the immediate diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis while waiting for culture result and this has a positive impact on patient outcome
Trust Perceptions of Online Travel Information by Different Content Creators: Some Social and Legal Implications
Consumers are increasingly turning to the online
environment to provide information to assist them in
making purchase decisions related to travel products. They
often rely on travel recommendations from different
sources, such as sellers, independent experts and, increasingly,
other consumers. A new type of online content, usergenerated
content (UGC), provides a number of legal and
social challenges to providers and users of that content,
especially in relation to areas such as defamation, misrepresentation
and social embarrassment. This paper reports
research that examined the level of trustworthiness of
online travel information from these different sources. The
study used a survey of Australian travel consumers (n=
12,000) and results support the notion that there are
differences in the level of trust for online travel information
from different sources. Respondents ‘tended to agree’ that
they trusted information provided by travel agents, information
from commercial operators and comments made by
travellers on third party websites. However, the highest
level of trust was afforded to information provided on State
government tourism websites. These results suggest that
greater trust is placed in online travel comments when they
are on a specific travel website than when they are on a
more generic social networking website. However, respondents
were ‘not sure’ that they trusted comments made by
travellers on weblogs and on social networking sites. Some
88% of respondents that had not visited UGC websites (or
were unsure if they had) indicated that they thought that
UGC would be useful in the future – suggesting that they
feel that any concerns they may have in relation to legal and
social problems resulting from its use will be resolved
Control of sulphide during anaerobic treatment of S-containing wastewaters by adding limited amounts of oxygen or nitrate
Sulphide generated during anaerobic treatment of S-containing wastewaters represents an environmental problem. Adding limited amounts of oxygen or nitrate (or nitrite) to biologically (or chemically) oxidise sulphide forms a simple process level strategy to control this problem. This short review evaluates the feasibility and limitations of this strategy on the basis of the results of bioreactor studies.Sulphide generated during anaerobic treatment of S-containing wastewaters represents an environmental problem. Bilateral adrenocortical carcinoma in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) and a novel mutation in the MEN1 gene
The incidence of adrenal involvement in MEN1 syndrome has been reported between 9 and 45%, while the incidence of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) in MEN1 patients has been reported between 2.6 and 6%. In the literature data only unilateral development of ACCs in MEN1 patients has been reported. We report a 31 years-old female MEN1-patient, in whom hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands, prolactinoma, non functioning pancreatic endocrine carcinoma and functioning bilateral adrenal carcinomas were diagnosed. Interestingly, a not previously described in the literature data, novel germline mutation (p.E45V) in exon 2 of MEN1 gene, was detected. The association of exon 2 mutation of the MEN1 gene with bilateral adrenal carcinomas in MEN1 syndrome, should be further investigated
Facilitation of Male Sexual Behavior in Syrian Hamsters by the Combined Action of Dihydrotestosterone and Testosterone
Testosterone (T) controls male Syrian hamster sexual behavior, however, neither of T's primary metabolites, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E(2)), even in highly supraphysiological doses, fully restores sexual behavior in castrated hamsters. DHT and T apparently interact with androgen receptors differentially to control male sexual behavior (MSB), but whether these two hormones act synergistically or antagonistically to control MSB has received scant experimental attention and is addressed in the present study.Sexually experienced male Syrian hamsters were gonadectomized and monitored 5 weeks later to confirm elimination of the ejaculatory reflex (week 0), at which time they received subcutaneous DHT-filled or empty capsules that remained in situ for the duration of the experiment. Daily injections of a physiological dose of 25 µg T or vehicle commenced two weeks after capsule implantation. MSB was tested 2, 4 and 5 weeks after T treatment began. DHT capsules were no more effective than control treatment for long-term restoration of ejaculation. Combined DHT + T treatment, however, restored the ejaculatory reflex more effectively than T alone, as evidenced by more rapid recovery of ejaculatory behavior, shorter ejaculation latencies, and a greater number of ejaculations in 30 minute tests.DHT and T administered together restored sexual behavior to pre-castration levels more rapidly than did T alone, whereas DHT and vehicle were largely ineffective. The additive actions of DHT and T on MSB are discussed in relation to different effects of these androgens on androgen receptors in the male hamster brain mating circuit
