    Pyroelectric infrared detectors and materials—A critical perspective

    Pyroelectric infrared detectors (PIRDs) have a number of advantages over other IR sensors, including room-temperature operation, wide wavelength sensitivity, and low cost, leading to their use in many applications and a market expected to reach U.S.$68 million by 2025. Physical models that can be used to accurately predict the performances of PIRDs of different types are reviewed in detail. All polar dielectrics exhibit the pyroelectric effect, so there are many materials potentially available for use in PIRDs. Traditionally, a range of “figures-of-merit” (FoMs) are employed to aid the selection of the best material to use in a given application. These FoMs, and their utility in determining how a given pyroelectric material will behave in a PIRD, are reviewed in the light of the physical models and the availability of dielectric data, which cover the frequency ranges of greatest interest for PIRDs (0.1–100 Hz). The properties of several pyroelectric materials are reviewed, and models are derived for their dielectric properties as functions of frequency. It is concluded, first, that the availability of full-frequency dielectric data is highly desirable if accurate predictions of device performance are to be obtained from the models and that second, the FoMs have practical utility in only very limited circumstances. Thus, they must be used with considerable care and circumspection. The circumstances under which each FoM is likely to give a good prediction for utility are discussed. The properties of some recently researched pyroelectric materials, including lead-containing single crystals in the Pb[(Mg⅓Nb⅔)xTi1−x]O3 system and Na½Bi½TiO3–K½Bi½TiO3 based lead-free crystals and ceramics, are reviewed in the light of this, and their properties and potential for device applications compared with the industry-standard material, LiTaO3. It is concluded that while there is potential for significant device performance improvements by using improved materials, especially with the PMN-PT-based materials, factors such as temperature stability, uniformity, and ease-of-processing are at least as important as device performance in determining material utility. The properties reported for the new lead-free materials do not, as yet, promise a performance likely to compete with LiTaO3 for mm-scale detectors, a material that is both readily available and lead-free

    Farmer-Scientist Knowledge Exchange

    The last 25 years has seen a paradigm shift in the understanding of the nature of knowledge and how it is exchanged in the agricultural context. A changing backdrop, with the move towards multi-functional land management, persistent environmental problems and the search for sustainable agricultural approaches, has brought new challenges. At the same time the research agenda on knowledge has changed as an era of positivism, during which science and scientific experts were given unrivalled authority, was challenged by social studies of science that began to question the superiority of scientific knowledge, and value alternative forms of knowledge such as those held by farmers. Theory and practice of knowledge exchange in agriculture has evolved in line with this, shifting from a linear model of knowledge transfer to a perspective that integrates knowledge from multiple actors through facilitation and participation and emphasises learning in a social context

    Evolution of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Its Close Commensal Relatives

    Streptococcus pneumoniae is a member of the Mitis group of streptococci which, according to 16S rRNA-sequence based phylogenetic reconstruction, includes 12 species. While other species of this group are considered prototypes of commensal bacteria, S. pneumoniae is among the most frequent microbial killers worldwide. Population genetic analysis of 118 strains, supported by demonstration of a distinct cell wall carbohydrate structure and competence pheromone sequence signature, shows that S. pneumoniae is one of several hundred evolutionary lineages forming a cluster separate from Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus infantis. The remaining lineages of this distinct cluster are commensals previously collectively referred to as Streptococcus mitis and each represent separate species by traditional taxonomic standard. Virulence genes including the operon for capsule polysaccharide synthesis and genes encoding IgA1 protease, pneumolysin, and autolysin were randomly distributed among S. mitis lineages. Estimates of the evolutionary age of the lineages, the identical location of remnants of virulence genes in the genomes of commensal strains, the pattern of genome reductions, and the proportion of unique genes and their origin support the model that the entire cluster of S. pneumoniae, S. pseudopneumoniae, and S. mitis lineages evolved from pneumococcus-like bacteria presumably pathogenic to the common immediate ancestor of hominoids. During their adaptation to a commensal life style, most of the lineages gradually lost the majority of genes determining virulence and became genetically distinct due to sexual isolation in their respective hosts

    Differential attraction and repulsion of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on molecularly smooth titanium films

    Magnetron sputtering techniques were used to prepare molecularly smooth titanium thin films possessing an average roughness between 0.18 nm and 0.52 nm over 5 μm × 5 μm AFM scanning areas. Films with an average roughness of 0.52 nm or lower were found to restrict the extent of P. aeruginosa cell attachment, with less than 0.5% of all available cells being retained on the surface. The attachment of S. aureus cells was also limited on films with an average surface roughness of 0.52 nm, however they exhibited a remarkable propensity for attachment on the nano-smoother 0.18 nm average surface roughness films, with the attachment density being almost twice as great as that observed on the nano-rougher film. The difference in attachment behaviour can be attributed to the difference in morphology of the rod-shaped P. aeruginosa compared to the spherical S. aureus cells

    Role of Occult and Post-acute Phase Replication in Protective Immunity Induced with a Novel Live Attenuated SIV Vaccine

    In order to evaluate the role of persisting virus replication during occult phase immunisation in the live attenuated SIV vaccine model, a novel SIVmac239Δnef variant (SIVrtTA) genetically engineered to replicate in the presence of doxycycline was evaluated for its ability to protect against wild-type SIVmac239. Indian rhesus macaques were vaccinated either with SIVrtTA or with SIVmac239Δnef. Doxycycline was withdrawn from 4 of 8 SIVrtTA vaccinates before challenge with wild-type virus. Unvaccinated challenge controls exhibited ~107 peak plasma viral RNA copies/ml persisting beyond the acute phase. Six vaccinates, four SIVmac239Δnef and two SIVrtTA vaccinates exhibited complete protection, defined by lack of wild-type viraemia post-challenge and virus-specific PCR analysis of tissues recovered post-mortem, whereas six SIVrtTA vaccinates were protected from high levels of viraemia. Critically, the complete protection in two SIVrtTA vaccinates was associated with enhanced SIVrtTA replication in the immediate post-acute vaccination period but was independent of doxycycline status at the time of challenge. Mutations were identified in the LTR promoter region and rtTA gene that do not affect doxycycline-control but were associated with enhanced post-acute phase replication in protected vaccinates. High frequencies of total circulating CD8+T effector memory cells and a higher total frequency of SIV-specific CD8+ mono and polyfunctional T cells on the day of wild-type challenge were associated with complete protection but these parameters were not predictive of outcome when assessed 130 days after challenge. Moreover, challenge virus-specific Nef CD8+ polyfunctional T cell responses and antigen were detected in tissues post mortem in completely-protected macaques indicating post-challenge control of infection. Within the parameters of the study design, on-going occult-phase replication may not be absolutely required for protective immunity

    Mechanisms for inclusive governance

    How mechanisms for inclusive governance are understood is built on the framing choices that are made about governance and that which is being governed. This chapter unpacks how governance can be understood and considers different historical and contemporary framings of water governance. A framing of “governance as praxis” is developed as a central element in the chapter. What makes governance inclusive is explored, drawing on theoretical, practical and institutional aspects before elucidating some of the different mechanisms currently used or proposed for creating inclusive water governance (though we argue against praxis based on simple mechanism). Finally, the factors that either constrain or enable inclusive water governance are explored with a focus on systemic concepts of learning and feedback

    Epistemic geographies of climate change: science, space and politics

    Anthropogenic climate change has been presented as the archetypal global problem, identified by the slow work of assembling a global knowledge infrastructure, and demanding a concertedly global political response. But this ‘global’ knowledge has distinctive geographies, shaped by histories of exploration and colonialism, by diverse epistemic and material cultures of knowledge-making, and by the often messy processes of linking scientific knowledge to decision-making within different polities. We suggest that understanding of the knowledge politics of climate change may benefit from engagement with literature on the geographies of science. We review work from across the social sciences which resonates with geographers’ interests in the spatialities of scientific knowledge, to build a picture of what we call the epistemic geographies of climate change. Moving from the field site and the computer model to the conference room and international political negotiations, we examine the spatialities of the interactional co-production of knowledge and social order. In so doing, we aim to proffer a new approach to the intersections of space, knowledge and power which can enrich geography’s engagements with the politics of a changing climate
