    Tripartite Entanglement versus Tripartite Nonlocality in Three-Qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-Class States

    We analyze the relationship between tripartite entanglement and genuine tripartite nonlocality for three-qubit pure states in the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger class. We consider a family of states known as the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states and derive an analytical expression relating the three-tangle, which quantifies tripartite entanglement, to the Svetlichny inequality, which is a Bell-type inequality that is violated only when all three qubits are nonlocally correlated. We show that states with three-tangle less than 1/2 do not violate the Svetlichny inequality. On the other hand, a set of states known as the maximal slice states does violate the Svetlichny inequality, and exactly analogous to the two-qubit case, the amount of violation is directly related to the degree of tripartite entanglement.We discuss further interesting properties of the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and maximal slice states

    In the earlier paper (Itoh and Kiyohara, Manuscr Math 114:247–264, 2004), we showed that the cut locus of a general point on two-dimensional ellipsoid is a segment of a curvature line and proved "Jacobi’s last geometric statement" on the singularities of the conjugate locus. In the present paper,we showthat a wider class of Liouville surfaces possess such simple cut loci and conjugate loci. The results include the determination of cut loci and the set of poles on two-sheeted hyperboloids and elliptic paraboloids

    THE EFFECTS OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL FORCES ON SINGLE SCULL BOAT ORIENTATION WHILE ROWING

    Forces produced at the oarlock pins and the foot stretcher, and the orientations of a single scull rowing boat, were investigated in eleven male rowers. Rowers were tested at 32 strokes•minute-1 on an instrumented single scull boat. The pitch of the boat was shown to be increased by the vertical forces applied to the pin and the foot stretcher, and roll was increased by an imbalance of vertical forces delivered to the bow and stroke side pins. Pitch and roll were largest in the late recovery and early drive phase when forces applied to the boat were greatest. It is suggested that the provision of feedback on boat orientation and force production may enable rowers to be trained to reduce changes in orientation and therefore to reduce energy loss through hydrodynamic drag

    Simulations of a Scintillator Compton Gamma Imager for Safety and Security

    We are designing an all-scintillator Compton gamma imager for use in security investigations and remediation actions involving radioactive threat material. To satisfy requirements for a rugged and portable instrument, we have chosen solid scintillator for the active volumes of both the scatter and absorber detectors. Using the BEAMnrc/EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulation package, we have constructed models using four different materials for the scatter detector: LaBr_3, NaI, CaF_2 and PVT. We have compared the detector performances using angular resolution, efficiency, and image resolution. We find that while PVT provides worse performance than that of the detectors based entirely on inorganic scintillators, all of the materials investigated for the scatter detector have the potential to provide performance adequate for our purposes.Comment: Revised text and figures, Presented at SORMA West 2008, Published in IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Scienc

    The introduction and refinement of the assessment of digitally recorded audio presentations

    This case study critically evaluates benefits and challenges of a form of assessment included in a final year undergraduate Religious Studies Open University module, which combines a written essay task with a digital audio recording of a short oral presentation. Based on the analysis of student and tutor feedback and sample assignments, this study critically examines how teaching and learning practices linked to this novel form of assessment have been iteratively developed in light of the project findings over a period of two years. It concludes that while this form of assessment poses a number of challenges, it can create valuable opportunities for the development of transferable twenty-first-century graduate employability skills as well as deep, effective learning experiences, particularly – though not exclusively – in distance learning settings

    Development of a Bahiagrass \u3cem\u3ePaspalum Notatum\u3c/em\u3e Flugge With Increased Short-Day Biomass

    Low herbage productivity of subtropical grasses during the short-day winter months of October through to March can place a severe burden on livestock producers in Southeastern U.S. Researchers at the University of Florida (Sinclair et al., 2001) hypothesised that the decrease in forage production might result from physiological dormancy induced by short day length. A study using artificial lights to extend the day length demonstrated that maintaining the day length at 15 hr during the short-day length period increased \u27Pensacola\u27 bahiagrass P. notatum Flugge saure Parodi forage yield 122% when compared with normal photoperiod (Mislevy et al., 2001). A Pensacola-derived bahiagrass population was selected for increased vegetative growth under short-day length using restricted recurrent phenotypic selection for three cycles (UF Cycle 3) to increase forage yield. Plants that comprise this population were less sensitive to short photoperiod and produced increased forage mass during the short days. The objective of this clipping study was to evaluate forage production and forage nutritive value of UF Cycle 3 compared with selected standard entries during short and long day length periods

    Memento Mori: The development and validation of the Death Reflection Scale

    Despite its potential for advancing organizational behavior (OB) research, the topic of death awareness has been vastly understudied. Moreover, research on death awareness has predominantly focused on the anxiety‐provoking aspect of death‐related cognitions, thus overlooking the positive aspect of death awareness, death reflection. This gap is exacerbated by the lack of a valid research instrument to measure death reflection. To address this issue, we offer a systematic conceptualization of death reflection, develop the Death Reflection Scale, and assess its psychometric properties across four studies. Further, using a sample of 268 firefighters, we examine whether death reflection buffers the detrimental impact of mortality cues at work on employee well‐being and safety performance. Results provide strong support for the psychometric properties of the Death Reflection Scale. Further, moderation analysis indicates death reflection weakens the negative effect of mortality cues on firefighters' safety performance. Overall, these findings suggest the newly developed Death Reflection Scale will prove useful in future research on death‐related cognitions

    Extended Daylength to Increase Fall/Winter Yields of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses

    Low forage production in fall/winter months is a severe limitation for dairy and beef cattle producers in the southeastern U.S. It was hypothesized that shrt daylengths during these months induce a physiological dormancy in grasses. Four grasses [Pensacola bahiagrass, Paspalum notatum Flugge; Tifton 85 and Florakirk bermudagrass, Cynodon dactylon (L.); Florona stargrass, C. nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis] were subjected to extended daylengths during the winter/fall months in a field test. Pensacola bahiagrass and Tifton 85 bermudagrass showed especially dramatic increases in forage yield during the fall/winter season under the extended daylength. Genetic elimination of daylength sensitivity in these grasses appears to be a viable option for increasing year-round forage production
