    Panel 1b Engaging Communities: HealthiAir

    Get PDF
While tobacco use in Maryland has declined significantly over the past 16 years, many tobacco-related health disparities remain among at-risk populations. This session will provide an overview of how local organizations collaborate to identify community needs and implement programs using effective approaches that best reach the residents they serve. Panelists from the Baltimore City Health Department and Zeta Healthy Aging Partnership (Z-HAP) will discuss their efforts to assist residents with implementing smoke-free healthy environments. Panelists from Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative and Empowering Believers Church will discuss faith-based partnerships, including the Smoke-free Holy Grounds Initiative

Creating a rubato layer cake: performing and producing overdubs with expressive timing on a classical recording for 'solo' piano

This paper reports on some of the outcomes from a larger UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project on Classical Music ‘Hyper-Production’ And Practice As Research – a project that sought to create radical reinterpretations of the classical repertoire through record production. In this example, the two authors of this paper, Emilie Capulet and Simon Zagorski-Thomas, were acting as pianist and producer respectively with a third researcher, Andrew Bourbon, working as engineer. The world of classical music has, in the vast majority of cases, sought to emulate the sound of the concert hall on recordings. In this case study from our project, a pianist and a record producer (both also academics) sought to explore the creative possibilities of transferring techniques from popular music to the production of classical recordings. Through the use of Actor Network Theory (Latour 2005; Law 2007; Callon 1986) as a method of analysis and Practice As Research (see for example Borgdorff 2006) as a mode of experimentation, we examined how both performer and producer explored the conceptualisation and practice of creating recorded music. The pre-production and recording sessions were either filmed or recorded and excerpts from these were used to examine the development of various performance techniques through this process of experimentation and discussion. For example, on pieces involving rubato, we explored a variety of techniques for synchronising multiple overdubbed performances where individual lines or parts from a piece for solo piano were staged or processed differently to others. This involved experiments working ‘by ear’, working with a guide track and with click tracks constructed in a variety of ways, and ‘by sight’, working with a video of the guide performer’s hands. The article begins with a description of the theoretical background to the study, examining the creative possibilities of this approach, discusses the ramifications that this has for performers, discusses the practical problems and then draws some conclusions and suggests some possible future work

    Direct electrodeposition of aluminium nano-rods

Electrodeposition of aluminium within an alumina nano-structured template, for use as high surface area current collectors in Li-ion microbatteries, was investigated. The aluminium electrodeposition was carried out in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride:aluminium chloride (1:2 ratio). First the aluminium electrodeposition process was confirmed by combined cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements. Then, aluminium was electrodeposited under pulsed-potential conditions within ordered alumina membranes. A careful removal of the alumina template unveiled free standing arrays of aluminium nano-rods. The nano-columns shape and dimensions are directly related to the template dimensions. To our knowledge, this is the first time that direct electrodeposition of aluminium nano-pillars onto an aluminium substrate is reported

Contribution à l’étude des gènes Vestigial

Vestigial-like proteins belong to a transcription co factors family with a conserved domain, called tondu, which allows their interaction with TEAD family transcription factors. The state of the art on the current knowledge about this family in terms of gene repertory, structure and functions in different animals has given rise to a review. PhD work has focused on vestigial-like 3 and vestigial-like 4 genes functions in the Xenopus amphibian. This choice stemmed from the laboratory previous works that has described vestigial like gene family in Xenopus, and from the Xenopus model advantages that allows cellular and molecular analysis. Gain and loss of function approaches indicate that vestigial-like 3 is especially implicated in neural crest cells migration. Vestigial-like 4 plays a role in early neurogenesis and neural crest formation.

3D-LIVE : live interactions through 3D visual environments

This paper explores Future Internet (FI) 3D-Media technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) in real and virtual environments in order to sense and experiment Real-Time interaction within live situations. The combination of FI testbeds and Living Labs (LL) would enable both researchers and users to explore capacities to enter the 3D Tele-Immersive (TI) application market and to establish new requirements for FI technology and infrastructure. It is expected that combining both FI technology pull and TI market pull would promote and accelerate the creation and adoption, by user communities such as sport practitioners, of innovative TI Services within sport events

Climate change, crops and commodity traders : subnational trade analysis highlights differentiated risk exposure

The global food system is increasingly interconnected and under pressure to support growing demand. At the same time, crop production is facing new and uncertain impacts from climate change. To date, understanding how downstream supply chain actors, such as commodity traders, are exposed to climate change risks has been difficult due to a lack of high-resolution climate and trade data. However, the recent availability of supply chain data linking subnational production to downstream actors, and gridded projections of crop yield under climate change, allows us to assess individual commodity trader exposure to long-term climate change risk. We apply such an analysis to soy production in Brazil, the world’s largest soy exporter. Whilst uncertainty across crop models’ yield projections means it remains difficult to accurately predict how production across the region will be affected by climate change, we demonstrate that the risk exposure of trading actors differs substantially due to the heterogeneity in their sourcing. Our study offers a first attempt to analyze subnational climate risk to individual trading actors operating across an entire production landscape, leading to more precise risk exposure analysis. With sufficient subnational data, this method can be applied to any crop and country combination, and in the context of wider food security issues, it will be pertinent to apply these methods across other production systems and downstream actors in the food system.
