Scrutinising the exceptionalism of young rural NEETs: A bibliometric review

The situation of rural NEETs aged 15 to 24 remains understudied. However, transitions from adolescence to emerging adulthood are very demanding for those in the countryside. Our paper discusses this gap by characterising the scholarship focusing on rural NEETs. We undertook a bibliometric review based on 325 entries on Web of Science (WoS) using the Bibliometrix analysis package. Our approach included descriptive bibliometric analysis, co-citation networks assessment, and thematic analysis. Our findings show that the investigation efforts depicting younger rural NEET are recent and marginal in the larger context of international NEETs scholarship. The field is dominated by economy- and sociology-led networks. Concerns regarding health and employment issues are central in international publishing trends, showing a dominant youth-at-risk approach to this group. Still, themes associated with adolescent NEETs and relevant programs’ assessment are gaining traction. Our findings show a need for funding research initiatives to reduce the invisibility of young rural NEETs.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

From center-vortex ensembles to the confining flux tube

In this review, we discuss the present status of the description of confining flux tubes in SU(N) pure Yang-Mills theory in terms of ensembles of percolating center vortices. This is based on three main pillars: modelling in the continuum the ensemble components detected in the lattice, the derivation of effective field representations, and contrasting the associated properties with Monte Carlo lattice results. The integration of the present knowledge about these points is essential to get closer to a unified physical picture for confinement. Here, we shall emphasize the last advances, which point to the importance of including the nonoriented center-vortex component and non-Abelian degrees when modelling the center-vortex ensemble measure. These inputs are responsible for the emergence of topological solitons and the possibility of accommodating the asymptotic scaling properties of the confining string tension

Bioconversion of cellulosic biomass wastes by Azorean hot spring bacterial consortia

ECO-BIO 2016Enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose is a fundamental step in the carbon cycle and in the industrial bioconversion of biomass to biofuels. In nature cellulose hydrolysis is often catalysed by enzymes from complex microbial communities, nevertheless these studies are limited to a few isolates. Actually the production of biofuels from biomass became a necessity and novel pre-treatments are mandatory to be discovered. Thereby the study of cellulose hydrolysing bacterial communities is a step in achieving a sustainable future in biofuels development. We propose the stabilization of an aerobic thermophilic bacterial consortia (BC) with the ability to adapt and hydrolyse different cellulose-rich wastes. Decaying cellulosic residues were sampled inside Azorean hot springs. Samples were enriched in cellulosic selective medium at 60ºC with growth monitored quantifying DNA. Hydrolysis efficiency was monitored and enzymatic activity was detected using xylan and carboxymetylcellulose (CMC). 16S rRNA hypervariable regions V3/V4 were amplified for phylogenetic characterization of BC using 454 pyrosequencing. Selected BC was able to hydrolyse 50% of cellulose-rich plant mix material in 4 days. Besides hydrolysing low content lignin material as non-wood plants, newspaper and cardboard, the consortia was able to hydrolyse high lignin content material, with lower efficiency. Celulase and xylanase were present in BC and reducing sugars were shown to be higher, compared with control. The phylogenetic results showed a large diversity in the BC with Thermobacillus representing 44% of the consortia, followed by Symbiobacterium 25%, Brevibacillus 16%, Geobacillus 12% and Hipomicrobium 3%. Three Geobacillus species were identified; G. stearothermophilus, G.thermodenitrificans and G.debilis. Further work will comply the isolation of enzyme producing bacteria isolates from the consortia for the construction of new consortia taking in consideration the efficiency of cellulose rich wastes. These results suggest that bacterial communities can be an alternative pre-treatment method of green wastes to obtain molecules to biofuels production.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Publisher Copyright: © 2023 by the authors.Tomato pomace is a low-cost, renewable resource that has been studied for the extraction of the biopolyester cutin, which is mainly composed of long-chain hydroxy fatty acids. These are excellent building blocks to produce new hydrophobic biopolymers. In this work, the monomers of cutin were extracted and isolated from tomato pomace and utilized to produce cutin-based films. Several strategies for the depolymerization and isolation of monomeric cutin were explored. Strategies differed in the state of the raw material at the beginning of the extraction process, the existence of a tomato peel dewaxing step, the type of solvent used, the type of alkaline hydrolysis, and the isolation method of cutin monomers. These strategies enabled the production of extracts enriched in fatty acids (16-hydroxyhexadecanoic, hexadecanedioic, stearic, and linoleic, among others). Cutin and chitosan-based films were successfully cast from cutin extracts and commercial chitosan. Films were characterized regarding their thickness (0.103 ± 0.004 mm and 0.106 ± 0.005 mm), color, surface morphology, water contact angle (93.37 ± 0.31° and 95.15 ± 0.53°), and water vapor permeability ((3.84 ± 0.39) × 10−11 mol·m/m2·s·Pa and (4.91 ± 1.33) × 10−11 mol·m/m2·s·Pa). Cutin and chitosan-based films showed great potential to be used in food packaging and provide an application for tomato processing waste.publishersversionpublishe

Tribal Marketing: portuguese adaptation and preliminary psychometric results of tribalism, team brand loyalty, team brand value and personal/group identity questionnaire

    Get PDF
