On the sources of static plane symmetric vacuum space-times

The static vacuum plane spacetimes are considered, which have two non-trivial solutions: The Taub solution and the Rindler solution. Imposed reflection symmetry, we find that the source for the Taub solution does not satisfy any energy conditions, which is consistent with previous studies, while the source for the Rindler solution satisfies the weak and strong energy conditions (but not the dominant one). It is argued that the counterpart of the Einstein theory to the gravitational field of a massive Newtonian plane should be described by the Rindler solution, which represents also a uniform gravitational field

Composite Hollow Truss With Multiple Vierendeel Panels [treliça Tubular Mista Com Múltiplos Painéis Vierendeel]

The aim of this study was to evaluate through analytical calculation, two-dimensional elastic modeling, and three-dimensional plastic modeling, the bearing capacity and failure modes of composite hollow trusses bi-supported with a 15 meter span, varying the number of central Vierendeel panels. The study found the proportion span/3 - span/3 - span/3, as the ideal relationship for the truss - Vierendeel - truss lengths, because by increasing the proportion of the length occupied by the central Vierendeel panels, the new system loses stiffness and no longer supports the load stipulated in the project. Furthermore, they can start presenting excessive vertical displacements and insufficient resistance to external shear forces acting on the panels.664431438(2005) Ansys version 10.0-basic analysis procedure, , ANSYS INC, Houston, PA, United States(2003) NBR 6118-Projeto de estruturas de concreto-procedimento, , ASSOCIAÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE NORMAS TÉCNICAS (ABNT), Rio de Janeiro: ABNT-Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas(2008) NBR 8800-Projeto de estruturas de aço e de estruturas mistas de aço e concreto de edifícios, p. 237. , ASSOCIAÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE NORMAS TÉCNICAS (ABNT), Rio de Janeiro: ABNT-Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas(2001) CAN/CSA-S16-01 Limit states design of steel structures, p. 167. , CANADIAN STANDARDS ASSOCIATION (CSA), Mississauga, OntarioClawson, W.C., Darwin, D., Strenght of composite beams at web openings (1982) Journal of the Structural Division-ASCE, 108, pp. 623-641. , marChien, E.Y.L., Ritchie, J.K., (1984) Design and construction of composite floor systems, , Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, 323p(2005) EN 1993-1-8:2005. 30th International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM2021) -15-18 June 2021, Athens, GreeceManual operations in manufacturing companies are still a common practice. This often results in high costs, high cycle times and therefore in lower productivity, particularly for companies operating in western countries. This is why many manufacturing companies relocated their production facilities in low age countries. This study was developed at a leading Portuguese material construction manufacturing company. The objective was to improve the packaging and labeling processes, that were identified as main bottlenecks in the factory. Lean was used to streamline these processes before being automated. This allowed for annual savings of 12432 €, with human operators being reallocated to other departments where they are more useful. Furthermore, cycle times were reduced by 42,9%, non-value-added activities were minimized, and operations with potentially high ergonomic risks were eliminated. In addition, a reduction of 84,3% in lithographed packaging was achieved, with a cost reduction of around 36 000 €/year, which is expected to continue in the forthcoming years.Teresa Pereira acknowledges the financial support of CIDEM- Research Center of Mechanical Engineering, FCT – Portuguese Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, under the Project UID/EMS/0615/2019info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Uso de meio seletivo para identificação de cepas de Burkholderia cepacia em amostras de trato respiratório de pacientes portadores de fibrose cística

Burkholderia cepacia colonizes cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. We evaluated the impact of the use of a selective medium in the rate of B. cepacia recovery from respiratory samples of CF patients. During a 6-month period, respiratory samples were collected from 106 CF patients and cultivated on selective media including a B. cepacia selective medium. Confirmation of the identity of B. cepacia isolates was carried out by species specific PCR and determination of genomovar status performed by a sequential PCR approach. Results of B. cepacia isolation during this period were compared to the preceding two years, when the sample processing was identical except for the lack of the B. cepacia selective medium. B. cepacia was isolated in 11/257 (4.2%) of the samples using the selective medium, in contrast with the preceding two years, when it was isolated in 6/1029 samples (0.58%), p < 0.0001. Identity of all 11 isolates was confirmed by PCR and genomovar determination was accomplished in all but one isolate. These results suggest that the use of a selective medium increases recovery rate of B. cepacia from respiratory samples.

Gravitational Collapse in Higher Dimensional Husain Space-Time

We investigate exact solution in higher dimensional Husain model for a null fluid source with pressure pp and density ρ\rho are related by the following relations (i) p=kρp=k\rho, (ii) p=kρB(v)ραp=k\rho-\frac{B(v)}{\rho^{\alpha}} (variable modified Chaplygin) and (iii) p=kραp=k\rho^{\alpha} (polytropic). We have studied the nature of singularity in gravitational collapse for the above equations of state and also for different choices of the of the parameters kk and BB namely, (i) k=0k=0, B=B= constant (generalized Chaplygin), (ii) B=B= constant (modified Chaplygin). It is found that the nature of singularity is independent of these choices of different equation of state except for variable Chaplygin model. Choices of various parameters are shown in tabular form. Finally, matching of Szekeres model with exterior Husain space-time is done.Comment: 12 latex pages, No figure, RevTex styl

On the reliability of a simple method for scoring phenotypes to estimate heritability: A case study with pupal color in Heliconius erato phyllis, Fabricius 1775 (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)

In this paper, two methods for assessing the degree of melanization of pupal exuviae from the butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis, Fabricius 1775 (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Heliconiini) are compared. In the first method, which was qualitative, the exuviae were classified by scoring the degree of melanization, whereas in the second method, which was quantitative, the exuviae were classified by optical density followed by analysis with appropriate software. The heritability (h2) of the degree of melanization was estimated by regression and analysis of variance. The estimates of h 2 were similar with both methods, indicating that the qualitative method could be particularly suitable for field work. The low estimates obtained for heritability may have resulted from the small sample size (n = 7-18 broods, including the parents) or from the allocation-priority hypothesis in which pupal color would be a lower priority trait compared to morphological traits and adequate larval development
