    Star formation history of Canis Major OB1 - II. A bimodal X-ray population revealed by XMM-Newton

    The Canis Major OB1 Association has an intriguing scenario of star formation, especially in the Canis Major R1 (CMa R1) region traditionally assigned to a reflection nebula, but in reality an ionized region. This work is focused on the young stellar population associated to CMa R1, for which our previous results from ROSAT, optical and near-infrared data had revealed two stellar groups with different ages, suggesting a possible mixing of populations originated from distinct star-formation episodes. The X-ray data allow the detected sources to be characterized according to hardness ratios, light curves and spectra. Estimates of mass and age were obtained from the 2MASS catalogue, and used to define a complete subsample of stellar counterparts, for statistical purposes. A catalogue of 387 XMM-Newton sources is provided, 78% being confirmed as members or probable members of the CMa R1 association. Flares were observed for 13 sources, and the spectra of 21 bright sources could be fitted by a thermal plasma model. Mean values of fits parameters were used to estimate X-ray luminosities. We found a minimum value of log(LX_X[erg/s]) = 29.43, indicating that our sample of low-mass stars (M_\star \leq 0.5 M_\odot), being faint X-ray emitters, is incomplete. Among the 250 objects selected as our complete subsample (defining our best sample), 171 are found to the East of the cloud, near Z CMa and dense molecular gas, 50% of them being young ( 10 Myr). The opposite happens to the West, near GU CMa, in areas lacking molecular gas: among 79 objects, 30% are young and 50% are older. These findings confirm that a first episode of distributed star formation occurred in the whole studied region ~10 Myr ago and dispersed the molecular gas, while a second, localized episode (< 5 Myr) took place in the regions where molecular gas is still present.Comment: 38 pages, 21 figures, accepted for A&

    Magnetic quantum phase transitions of the antiferromagnetic J_{1}-J_{2} Heisenberg model

    We obtain the complete phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic J1J_{1}-J2J_{2} model, 0α=J2/J110\leq \alpha = J_2/J1 \leq 1, within the framework of the O(N)O(N) nonlinear sigma model. We find two magnetically ordered phases, one with N\' eel order, for α0.4\alpha \leq 0.4, and another with collinear order, for α0.6\alpha\geq 0.6, separated by a nonmagnetic region, for 0.4α0.60.4\leq \alpha \leq 0.6, where a gapped spin liquid is found. The transition at α=0.4\alpha=0.4 is of the second order while the one at α=0.6\alpha=0.6 is of the first order and the spin gaps cross at α=0.5\alpha=0.5. Our results are exact at NN\rightarrow\infty and agree with numerical results from different methods.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Quantitative chemical tagging, stellar ages and the chemo-dynamical evolution of the Galactic disc

    The early science results from the new generation of high-resolution stellar spectroscopic surveys, such as GALAH and the Gaia-ESO survey, will represent major milestones in the quest to chemically tag the Galaxy. Yet this technique to reconstruct dispersed coeval stellar groups has remained largely untested until recently. We build on previous work that developed an empirical chemical tagging probability function, which describes the likelihood that two field stars are conatal, that is, they were formed in the same cluster environment. In this work we perform the first ever blind chemical tagging experiment, i.e., tagging stars with no known or otherwise discernable associations, on a sample of 714 disc field stars with a number of high quality high resolution homogeneous metal abundance measurements. We present evidence that chemical tagging of field stars does identify coeval groups of stars, yet these groups may not represent distinct formation sites, e.g. as in dissolved open clusters, as previously thought. Our results point to several important conclusions, among them that group finding will be limited strictly to chemical abundance space, e.g. stellar ages, kinematics, colors, temperature and surface gravity do not enhance the detectability of groups. We also demonstrate that in addition to its role in probing the chemical enrichment and kinematic history of the Galactic disc, chemical tagging represents a powerful new stellar age determination technique.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS

    The article discusses the significance of cultural capital for the understanding of the field of housing in contemporary Britain. It explores the relationship between housing and the position of individuals in social space mapped out by means of a multiple correspondence analysis. It considers the material aspects of housing and the changing contexts that are linked to the creation and display of desire for social position and distinction expressed in talk about home decoration as personal expression and individuals' ideas of a `dream house'. It is based on an empirical investigation of taste and lifestyle using nationally representative survey data and qualitative interviews. The article shows both that personal resources and the imagination of home are linked to levels of cultural capital, and that rich methods of investigation are required to grasp the significance of these normally invisible assets to broaden the academic understanding of the field of housing in contemporary culture

    Using mixed methods for analysing culture : The Cultural Capital and Social Exclusion project

    This paper discusses the use of material generated in a mixed method investigation into cultural tastes and practices, conducted in Britain from 2003 to 2006, which employed a survey, focus groups and household interviews. The study analysed the patterning of cultural life across a number of fields, enhancing the empirical and methodological template provided by Bourdieu’s Distinction. Here we discuss criticisms of Bourdieu emerging from subsequent studies of class, culture and taste, outline the arguments related to the use of mixed methods and present illustrative results from the analysis of these different types of data. We discuss how the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods informed our analysis of cultural life in contemporary Britain. No single method was able to shed light on all aspects of our inquiry, lending support to the view that mixing methods is the most productive strategy for the investigation of complex social phenomena

    Spatial-temporal evolution of the current filamentation instability

    The spatial-temporal evolution of the purely transverse current filamentation instability is analyzed by deriving a single partial differential equation for the instability and obtaining the analytical solutions for the spatially and temporally growing current filament mode. When the beam front always encounters fresh plasma, our analysis shows that the instability grows spatially from the beam front to the back up to a certain critical beam length; then the instability acquires a purely temporal growth. This critical beam length increases linearly with time and in the non-relativistic regime it is proportional to the beam velocity. In the relativistic regime the critical length is inversely proportional to the cube of the beam Lorentz factor γ0b\gamma_{0b}. Thus, in the ultra-relativistic regime the instability immediately acquires a purely temporal growth all over the beam. The analytical results are in good agreement with multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations performed with OSIRIS. Relevance of current study to recent and future experiments on fireball beams is also addressed
