    Non-Cooperative Detection of Frequency-Hopped GMSK Signals

    Many current and emerging communication signals use Gaussian Minimum Shift Keyed (GMSK), Frequency-Hopped (FH) waveforms to reduce adjacent-channel interference while maintaining Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) characteristics. These waveforms appear in both military (Tactical Targeting Networking Technology, or TTNT) and civilian (Bluetooth) applications. This research develops wideband and channelized radiometer intercept receiver models to detect a GMSK-FH signal under a variety of conditions in a tactical communications environment. The signal of interest (SOI) and receivers have both fixed and variable parameters. Jamming is also introduced into the system to serve as an environmental parameter. These parameters are adjusted to examine the effects they have on the detectability of the SOI. The metric for detection performance is the distance the intercept receiver must be from the communication transmitter to meet a given set of intercept receiver performance criteria (e.g., PFA and PD). It is shown that the GMSK-FH waveform benefits from an increased hop rate, a reduced signal duration, and the introduction of jitter into the waveform. Narrowband jamming is also very detrimental to channelized receiver performance. The intercept receiver benefits from reducing the bandwidth of the channelized radiometer channels, although this requires precise a priori knowledge of the hop frequencies

    Changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) and ECM-associated proteins in the metastatic progression of prostate cancer

    Prostate cancer (PCa) is no exception to the multi-step process of metastasis. As PCa progresses, changes occur within the microenvironments of both the malignant cells and their targeted site of metastasis, enabling the necessary responses that result in successful translocation. The majority of patients with progressing prostate cancers develop skeletal metastases. Despite advancing efforts in early detection and management, there remains no effective, long-term cure for metastatic PCa. Therefore, the elucidation of the mechanism of PCa metastasis and preferential establishment of lesions in bone is an intensive area of investigation that promises to generate new targets for therapeutic intervention. This review will survey what is currently know concerning PCa interaction with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the roles of factors within the tumor and ECM microenvironments that contribute to metastasis. These will be discussed within the context of changes in expression and functional heterodimerization patterns of integrins, changes in ECM expression and reorganization by proteases facilitating invasion.     Deciphering the relative contributions of multiple functions within plant-microbe symbioses

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://www.esajournals.org/doi/abs/10.1890/09-1858.1For microbial symbioses with plants, such as mycorrhizas, we typically quantify either the net effects of one partner on another or a single function a symbiont provides. However, many microbial symbioses provide multiple functions to plants that vary based on the microbial species or functional group, plant species, and environment. Here we quantified the relative contributions of multiple functions provided by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi to symbiont-mediated changes in plant biomass. We used two published data sets, one that measured multiple functions (pathogen protection and nutrient uptake) on a single plant and one that measured a single function (pathogen protection) on multiple plants. Using structural equation modeling, we observed strong variation in the functional pathways by which AM fungi altered plant growth; changes in plant biomass were associated with different functions (and different AM fungal functional groups) for the different plant species. Utilizing this methodology across multiple partners and environments will allow researchers to gauge the relative importance of functions they isolate and, perhaps more importantly, those they did not consider. This baseline information is essential for establishing the specific mechanisms by which microbial symbioses influence plant diversity and to more effectively utilize these organisms in agriculture, restoration and conservation

    SAtlas: Spherical Versions of the Atlas Stellar Atmosphere Program

    Context: The current stellar atmosphere programs still cannot match some fundamental observations of the brightest stars, and with new techniques, such as optical interferometry, providing new data for these stars, additional development of stellar atmosphere codes is required. Aims: To modify the open-source model atmosphere program Atlas to treat spherical geometry, creating a test-bed stellar atmosphere code for stars with extended atmospheres. Methods: The plane-parallel Atlas has been changed by introducing the necessary spherical modifications in the pressure structure, in the radiative transfer and in the temperature correction. Results: Several test models show that the spherical program matches the plane-parallel models in the high surface gravity regime, and matches spherical models computed by Phoenix and by MARCS in the low gravity case.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in A&
