PURPOSE: The present study is an analysis of inflation and economic growth. Its purpose is to present the impact of inflation processes on economic growth as well as to formulate the relationship between these two basic economic categories.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Secondary information sources were used in the study, mainly economic reports, available literature on the subject, statistical data retrieved from the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS), as well as EUROSTAT statistical information. Published sources were analysed and reviewed using a descriptive approach. Statistical data was analysed by means of the Pearson linear correlation coefficient and the linear and polynomial trend model.FINDINGS: Statistical analysis confirmed the existence of a moderate relationship between the inflation rate and the economic growth index. The relationship is inverse, i.e. the higher the inflation rate, the lower the economic growth index.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: A low inflation rate has a long-term positive impact on the rate of economic growth, vindicating the choice of price stabilisation as a goal of monetary policy.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The analysis of macroeconomic phenomena in the post-pandemic period seems to be necessary to explain the course of current economic processes. The lockdown has weakened national economies, but the relationship between inflation and economic growth has not changed its nature. Therefore, it seems justified to continue research on such relationships.peer-reviewe

PURPOSE: The specificity of defining and describing the efficiency of higher education institutions and the related difficulties arise from the fact that the purpose of such an educational institution is perceived in various ways. Over the last years, there have been several significant reforms of higher education, including vocational education, which have led to a revision of the way in which universities are perceived. What remains unchanged is that the primary task of public vocational universities is to educate specialists for various fields of economy. The effective implementation of this very important function and many others makes it necessary to constantly reflect on the functioning of universities. In terms of the efficiency of these units, analytical, research, comparative, and other activities may lead to valuable conclusions, which in the long run have a chance to improve the position of public vocational universities in the competitive market of educational services.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The aim of this article is to present a simulation of a merger of a state higher vocational school on the example of ABNS in Biała Podlaska with three selected schools from the public vocational school sector and three selected academic universities from Poland. The simulation was based on the research material and conclusions from the research project entitled. "Forecasting changes in the efficiency of selected PWSZs as a result of university consolidation in the context of the ranking of PWSZs in Poland", which was conducted in 2020 – 2021.FINDINGS: The results of the simulation made it possible to evaluate the efficiency of the university in Biala Podlaska after merging with selected higher education institutions. This provided basis for inferring benefits in the area of efficiency for ABNS in Biala Podlaska, in the context of the analysed potential strategic alliances with selected educational units.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This made it possible to verify the following hypothesis: A greater benefit in terms of increased operational efficiency will be achieved by ABNS in Biala Podlaska if it merges with an entity from the public vocational university sector than from the academic university sector.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The analyses conducted illustrate the potential of a new approach to the higher education system.peer-reviewe

Pterostilbene, a polyphenolic compound present in grapes and other fruits, has been demonstrated to inhibit growth and induce apoptosis and autophagy in some cancer cell types. We found that pterostilbene at the IC90 concentration of 44 µM inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in MOLT4 human leukemia cells. Treatment with pterostilbene resulted in a transient accumulation of cells in the G0/G1-cell cycle phase followed by the S-phase arrest. Pterostilbene-induced apoptotic death of MOLT4 cells was mediated by caspase-3 activation and was accompanied by the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, phosphatidylserine externalization and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Our results suggest that pterostilbene could serve as a potential additional chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of leukemia

    Major causes of insuline resistance

    Get PDF
Causes of insulin resistance can be divided into innate and secondary. There are many reasons for insulin resistance, including genetic mutations like insulin receptor mutations, hormonal and pharmacological or immunological. However insulin resistance is most commonly associated with obesity. Obesity is associated with a low-grade inflammation of white adipose tissue (WAT) resulting from chronic activation of the innate immune system and which can subsequently lead to insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes

Paraoxonase 1 as an important antiatherogenic agent

    Get PDF
The inverse relationship between High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) level and risk of ischaemic heart disease was proved by many epidemiological studies. Although the main mechanism of antiatherogenic activity of HDL is a reverse transport of cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver, HDL additionally carries some antioxidative enzymes like Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) which protects LDL and HDL lipoproteins from oxidative modification. A lot of antiatherogenic activities of HDL depends on PON1 activity

Protein and siRNA delivery by transportan and transportan 10 into colorectal cancer cell lines

Introduction. Cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) have the ability to translocate through cell membranes with high efficiency and therefore can introduce biological agents with pharmaceutical properties into the cell. Transportan (TP) and its shorter analog transportan 10 (TP10) are among the best studied CPPs, however, their effects on viability of and cargo introduction into colorectal cancer (CRC) cells have yet not been investigated. The aim of our study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of TP and TP10 on representative CRC lines and the efficiency of protein (streptavidin) and siRNA cargo delivery by TP-biotinylated derivatives (TP-biot). Material and methods. HT29 (early stage CRC model) and HCT116 (metastatic CRC model) cell lines were incubated with TP, TP10, TP-biot1, TP-biot13 and TP10-biot1. The effects of studied CPPs on cell viability and cell cycle were assessed by MTT and annexin V assays. The uptake of streptavidin-FITC complex into cells was determined by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, with the inhibition of cellular vesicle trafficking by brefeldin A. The efficiency of siRNA for SASH1 gene delivery was measured by quantitative PCR (qPCR). Results. Since up to 10 µM concentrations of each CPP showed no significant cytotoxic effect, the concentrations of 0.5–5 µM were used for further analyses. Within this concentration range none of the studied CPPs affected cell viability and cell cycle. The efficient and endocytosis-independent introduction of streptavidin-FITC complex into cells was observed for TP10-biot1 and TP-biot1 with the cytoplasmic location of the fluorescent cargo; decreased SASH1 mRNA level was noticed with the use of siRNA and analyzed CPPs. Conclusions. We conclude that TP, TP10 and their biotinylated derivatives can be used as efficient delivery vehicles of small and large cargoes into CRC cells

It includes holistic approach to patients examination. In this systematic review we analyzed results of tests used in CGA and correlation of results. Moreover, we underlined some issues concerning homogeneity of tests used in CGA as well as scientific validity of some of its tools. Results of prospective studies show that some of results of examination used in CGA are good predictors of functioning in another health domain in next years.Systolic blood pressure as well as BMI could be good predictors for neuropsychological functioning, however results are equivocal.Low scores in dual task (walking and cognitive engaging task simultaneously) are good predictor for falls occurrence. Education measured by socioeconomic status is very often mentioned as one of the best predictors of cognitive functioning.Undergoing Mini Nutritional Assessment by patients could be an effective tool to improve their nutrition status, possibly by indirectly influencing on their diet habits. Moreover, genotype examination could be worth to include into CGA due to, inter alia, examination of possible causes of dietary deficits.Aerobic examination could be done by cost-free tests, which sensitivity and specify are on tolerable level. It could help lowering CGA costs, which will help make it widely available for patients. Keywords: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, cognitive functioning, older people

PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF RURAL HOUSEHOLDS IN THE SCOPE OF REDUCING ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION

    No full text
The aim of the article is to provide examples of activities undertaken by rural households in the pursuit of reducing electricity use. Households are one of the economic entities of the economic system that significantly use electricity to meet the needs of their members. Expenses incurred for the purchase of energy constitute one of the significant elements in the structure of total expenses. Households, by limiting the consumption of electricity, firstly, reduce expenses, and secondly, undertake pro- -environmental activities. The article uses the results of surveys carried out in a group of 404 households located in rural areas of Poland. In addition, the analysis of primary data was expanded to include data from the Household Budget Survey carried out by the Central Statistical Office. The conducted research has shown that the most common activities aimed at reducing energy consumption were turning off the light in unused rooms as well as the use of energy-saving light bulbs and home appliances. Activities were mainly influenced by the level of ecological awareness, level of education and age
