    Social and spatial effects on genetic variation between foraging flocks in a wild bird population

    Social interactions are rarely random. In some instances, animals exhibit homophily or heterophily, the tendency to interact with similar or dissimilar conspecifics, respectively. Genetic homophily and heterophily influence the evolutionary dynamics of populations, because they potentially affect sexual and social selection. Here, we investigate the link between social interactions and allele frequencies in foraging flocks of great tits (Parus major ) over three consecutive years. We constructed co‐occurrence networks which explicitly described the splitting and merging of 85,602 flocks through time (fission–fusion dynamics), at 60 feeding sites. Of the 1,711 birds in those flocks, we genotyped 962 individuals at 4,701 autosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP s). By combining genomewide genotyping with repeated field observations of the same individuals, we were able to investigate links between social structure and allele frequencies at a much finer scale than was previously possible. We explicitly accounted for potential spatial effects underlying genetic structure at the population level. We modelled social structure and spatial configuration of great tit fission–fusion dynamics with eigenvector maps. Variance partitioning revealed that allele frequencies were strongly affected by group fidelity (explaining 27%–45% of variance) as individuals tended to maintain associations with the same conspecifics. These conspecifics were genetically more dissimilar than expected, shown by genomewide heterophily for pure social (i.e., space‐independent) grouping preferences. Genomewide homophily was linked to spatial configuration, indicating spatial segregation of genotypes. We did not find evidence for homophily or heterophily for putative socially relevant candidate genes or any other SNP markers. Together, these results demonstrate the importance of distinguishing social and spatial processes in determining population structure

    SDSS-RASS: Next Generation of Cluster-Finding Algorithms

    We outline here the next generation of cluster-finding algorithms. We show how advances in Computer Science and Statistics have helped develop robust, fast algorithms for finding clusters of galaxies in large multi-dimensional astronomical databases like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Specifically, this paper presents four new advances: (1) A new semi-parametric algorithm - nicknamed ``C4'' - for jointly finding clusters of galaxies in the SDSS and ROSAT All-Sky Survey databases; (2) The introduction of the False Discovery Rate into Astronomy; (3) The role of kernel shape in optimizing cluster detection; (4) A new determination of the X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function which has bearing on the existence of a ``deficit'' of high redshift, high luminosity clusters.     Bohmian Mechanics and Quantum Information

    Many recent results suggest that quantum theory is about information, and that quantum theory is best understood as arising from principles concerning information and information processing. At the same time, by far the simplest version of quantum mechanics, Bohmian mechanics, is concerned, not with information but with the behavior of an objective microscopic reality given by particles and their positions. What I would like to do here is to examine whether, and to what extent, the importance of information, observation, and the like in quantum theory can be understood from a Bohmian perspective. I would like to explore the hypothesis that the idea that information plays a special role in physics naturally emerges in a Bohmian universe.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

    The galaxy-mass correlation function measured from weak lensing in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We present galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements over scales 0.025 to 10 h(-1) Mpc in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using a flux-limited sample of 127,001 lens galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and mean luminosity [L] similar to L-* and 9,020,388 source galaxies with photometric redshifts, we invert the lensing signal to obtain the galaxy-mass correlation function xi(gm). We find xi(gm) is consistent with a power law, xi(gm) (r = r(0))(-gamma), with best-fit parameters gamma = 1.79 +/- 0.06 and r(0) (5.4 +/- 0.7) (0.27/Omega(m))(1/gamma) h(-1) Mpc. At fixed separation, the ratio xi(gg)/xi(gm) = b/r, where b is the bias and r is the correlation coefficient. Comparing with the galaxy autocorrelation function for a similarly selected sample of SDSS galaxies, we find that b/r is approximately scale-independent over scales 0.2 - 6.7 h(-1) Mpc, with mean [b/r] = (1.3 +/- 0.2) (Omega(m)/0.27). We also find no scale dependence in b/r for a volume-limited sample of luminous galaxies (-23.0 < M-r < -21.5). The mean b/r for this sample is [b/r](Vlim) = (2.0 +/- 0.7) (Omega(m)/0.27). We split the lens galaxy sample into subsets based on luminosity, color, spectral type, and velocity dispersion and see clear trends of the lensing signal with each of these parameters. The amplitude and logarithmic slope of xi(gm) increase with galaxy luminosity. For high luminosities (L similar to 5 L-*), xi(gm) deviates significantly from a power law. These trends with luminosity also appear in the subsample of red galaxies, which are more strongly clustered than blue galaxies

    A three-dimensional model of primary bovine endometrium using an electrospun scaffold

    Endometrial stromal and epithelial cell function is typically studied in vitro using standard two-dimensional monocultures, but these cultures fail to reflect the complex three-dimensional (3D) architecture of tissue. A 3D model of bovine endometrium that reflects the architectural arrangement of in vivo tissue would beneficially assist the study of tissue function. An electrospun polyglycolide (PGA) scaffold was selected to grow a 3D model of primary bovine endometrial epithelial and stromal cells, that reflects the architecture of the endometrium for the study of pathophysiology. Electrospun scaffolds were seeded with stromal and epithelial cells, and growth was assessed using histological techniques. Prostaglandin E2 and prostaglandin F2α responsiveness of endometrial scaffold constructs was tested using oxytocin plus arachidonic acid (OT + AA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Stromal and epithelial cells growing on the electrospun scaffold had an architectural arrangement that mimicked whole tissue, deposited fibronectin, had appropriate expression of vimentin and cytokeratin and were responsive to OT + AA and LPS, as measured by prostaglandin accumulation. In conclusion, a functional 3D model of stromal and epithelial cells was developed using a PGA electrospun scaffold which may be used to study endometrial pathophysiology

    Expression of genes associated with immunity in the endometrium of cattle with disparate postpartum uterine disease and fertility.

    BACKGROUND: Contamination of the uterine lumen with bacteria is ubiquitous in cattle after parturition. Some animals develop endometritis and have reduced fertility but others have no uterine disease and readily conceive. The present study tested the hypothesis that postpartum cattle that develop persistent endometritis and infertility are unable to limit the inflammatory response to uterine bacterial infection. METHODS: Endometrial biopsies were collected several times during the postpartum period from animals that were subsequently infertile with persistent endometritis (n = 4) or had no clinical disease and conceived to first insemination (n = 4). Quantitative PCR was used to determine the expression of candidate genes in the endometrial biopsies, including the Toll-like receptor (TLR 1 to 10) family of innate immune receptors, inflammatory mediators and their cognate receptors. Selected proteins were examined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The expression of genes encoding pro-inflammatory mediators such as interleukins (IL1A, IL1B and IL6), and nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) were higher during the first week post partum than subsequently. During the first week post partum, there was higher gene expression in infertile than fertile animals of TLR4, the receptor for bacterial lipopolysaccharide, and the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL1A and IL1B, and their receptor IL1R2. The expression of genes encoding other Toll-like receptors, transforming growth factor beta receptor 1 (TGFBR1) or prostaglandin E2 receptors (PTGER2 and PTGER4) did not differ significantly between the animal groups. Gene expression did not differ significantly between infertile and fertile animals after the first week postpartum. However, there were higher ratios of IL1A or IL1B mRNA to the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL10, during the first week post partum in the infertile than fertile animals, and the protein products of these genes were mainly localised to the epithelium of the endometrium.
