New Fast Transform for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

In this paper, a new fast and low complexity transform is introduced for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless systems. The new transform combines the effects of fast complex-Walsh-Hadamard transform (CHT) and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) into a single unitary transform named in this paper as the complex transition transform (CTT). The development of a new algorithm for fast calculation of the CT transform called FCT is found to have all the desirable properties such as in-place computation, simple indexing scheme and considerably lower arithmetic complexity than existing algorithms. Furthermore, a new OFDM system using the FCT algorithm is introduced and its performance has been evaluated. The proposed CT-OFDM achieves a noticeable reduction in peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) and a significant improvement in the bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared with the conventional OFDM.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

Experiential Learning of Using Digital Tools in Construction Management Education

    Get PDF
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) is gradually reshaping the entire construction industry. It is not an option that skills and abilities in a wide range of digital technologies should be part of the construction management curriculum. The sheer lack of skills and expertise in the shift to digital construction is related to the insufficiency of hands-on activities using various digital tools. This study outlines the experience learning of utilising digital tools in construction management education. The purpose of this article is to investigate the extent to which Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) influences students' perceptions of digital tools. The student association in the construction management programme offered at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) designed and organised a hands-on workshop activity approach to address the issue of lack of proficiency in using digital tools such as Autodesk Revit (BIM system), Microsoft Excel (Quantity Take-Off). The method begins with a basic grasp of digital tools for construction-related applications. Then, step by step, explores the computer interface ribbons, shortcuts, and associated tabs. The proposed method is examined in faculty computer laboratories by employing practical learning for both digital tools (i.e. Revit and Excel) in either creating a three-dimensional (3D) BIM Model or the capacity to calculate material amounts. Based on the assessment results, the strategy helps students master the digital tools and implement such activities in their official course module

Background: The prevalence of asthma and allergies is increasing in both Western and developing countries. Few studies evaluated asthma prevalence in Egypt . Objectives: Determination of the prevalence and risk factors of asthma among preparatory school children in Assiut district, in Upper Egypt. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among preparatory school students in Assiut city and two rural areas in Assiut district in Upper Egypt. Twelve schools were selected randomly from different regions in Assiut city and two rural areas one to the North and the other to the South of Assiut city. The total coverage of the students included was 1048 (482 boys and 566 girls). Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire (in Arabic Language) which was filled by the participants. Results: Of the 1048 positively responding subjects, 65 fitted the diagnosis of asthma with over all prevalence of 6.2%. No significant difference was found between urban and rural areas (P = 0.075). Using logistic regression analysis: a positive family history of allergy and the presence of other one or more allergic diseases were significantly associated risk factors for asthma. Exposure to dust, cigarette smoke, playing and physical activity, common cold attacks, and special food or drinks were the most common triggering factors for asthma exacerbations . Conclusion: Bronchial asthma is a significant health problem among children and adolescents in Assiut district and needs special medical care. Wider scale multi-center studies in upper Egypt and other localities of Egypt are needed to outline the profile of bronchial asthma among children and adolescents in the whole country. Bornological Soft Sets

The concept of bounded set within this set or space is given by many authors. A bornology is defined on soft set to solve the problems of boundedness for the soft set. Also, we construct soft base and soft subbase as a part of fundamental construction for bornological soft sets. Furthermore, It is a natural to study fundamental construction for bornological soft sets, such as soft subspace, product soft bornology and soft bornological isomorphism. Additionally, a family of bornological soft sets can be a partial ordered set by partial ordered relation and we prove that the intersection of bornological soft sets is bornological soft sets but the union of bornological soft sets is not necessary to be bornological soft sets. The left-right translation is soft bornological isomorphism and the product of bornological soft sets are bornological soft sets. Finally, generate soft bornological structure whose elements are soft unbounded sets

Impact of increased digital use and internet gaming on nursing students' empathy: a cross-sectional study

Background: The COVID-19 restrictions and quarantines had led to increased dependence and usage of digital devices for various human activities and internet gaming to the extent of risking vulnerable individuals to develop addiction towards it. Little is known on such risks among populations of nursing students and its impact on their empathy skills or trait. Objective: Determining the impact of digital use and internet gaming on empathy of nursing students undergoing remote learning during closure of learning institutions nationwide. Design: Cross-sectional online survey was conducted from October to December 2020. Settings: Two established public institutions located in Malaysia. Participants: A total of 345 nursing students pursuing diploma and bachelor nursing programs. Methods: Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ), Digital Addiction Scale (DAS) and Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short form (IGDS9-SF) were self-administered via Google Form™. Following principal component analysis of TEQ using IBM-SPSS™ (V-27), path analyses was performed using SmartPLS™ (V-3). Results: Despite the increased time spent on digital devices (Δ 2.8 h/day) and internet gaming (Δ 1 h/week) before and during the pandemic, the proportion of high digital users (1.4 %) and gamers (20.9 %) were low; and sizable ≈75 % had higher-than-normal empathy. Digital-related emotions and overuse of them were associated with lower empathy (β = − 0.111, − 0.192; p values < 0.05) and higher callousness (β = 0.181, 0.131; p values < 0.05); internet gaming addiction predicted callousness (β = 0.265, p < 0.001) but digital dependence correlated with higher empathy (β = 0.172, p = 0.009). Conclusions: Digital and internet gaming addiction potentially impact empathy. The negative impact of digital dependence can be attenuated by “digital empathy” – an emerging phenomenon becoming increasingly vital in digital health and communication
