The objective of the present study was to compare short and long term application of Echinacea purpurea root powder on growth performance and immunity response of broiler chicks. Three replicate trials involving a total of 600 day-old Ross chicks were used in this study. In each trial, a total of 200 chicks were randomly allocated into 5 groups. Each group consisted of 4 pens with 10 chicks in each pen. The birds in group A received control mash diet during the experiment, but those in groups B and C were given control diet supplemented with 0.1% (w/w) and 0.5% (w/w) E. purpurea root powder, respectively. The chicks in groups D and E received control diet supplemented with 0.1% (w/w) and 0.5% (w/w) E. purpurea root powder, respectively, just for one week and fed control diet afterwards. The results showed that E. purpurea consumption for six weeks changed the total counts of white blood cells (WBCs), number of lymphocytes and heterophils, feed conversation ratio, and antibody titers against newcastle and avian influenza diseases (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this result suggests that feeding E. purpurea, particularly for long time, may improve feed conversion, change blood cells number and enhance immunity response in broilers.Key words: Echinacea purpurea, broilers, feed conversion, immunity response

Bovine mastitis is the most costly disease affecting dairy cows and milk production. As Staphylococcus aureus is considered as a major pathogen due to its prevalence in dairy herds, contagious nature of infection, economic impact of treatment and control and its resistance to antimicrobial agents is a well-documented challenge in dairy cows. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate and determine the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles against S. aureus isolated from subclinical mastitis cows. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) distribution of the silver nanoparticles tested for S. aureus field isolates were determined by a broth dilution method. The results show MIC values ranging from 1.25 to 10 μg/ml. The MIC values that inhibited 50 and 90% of the population of the isolates tested of silver nanoparticles were 5 and 10 μg/ml for S. aureus, respectively. In addition, the results of this study demonstrated that the mean time of the antimicrobial action of silver nanoparticles against S. aureus is 7 min. This in vitro result clearly indicates that the silver nanoparticle might have a good activity against S. aureus with mastitis origin.Key words: Bovine mastitis, silver nanoparticles, Staphylococcus aureus

Control of bovine mastitis: old and recent therapeutic approaches

    Get PDF
Mastitis is defined as the inflammatory response resulting of the infection of the udder tissue and it is reported in numerous species, namely in domestic dairy animals. This pathology is the most frequent disease of dairy cattle and can be potentially fatal. Mastitis is an economically important pathology associated with reduced milk production, changes in milk composition and quality, being considered one of the most costly to dairy industry. Therefore, the majority of research in the field has focused on control of bovine mastitis and many efforts are being made for the development of new and effective anti-mastitis drugs. Antibiotic treatment is an established component of mastitis control programs; however, the continuous search for new therapeutic alternatives, effective in the control and treatment of bovine mastitis, is urgent. This review will provide an overview of some conventional and emerging approaches in the management of bovine mastitis infections.F. ABSTRACT Introduction & objective: Global investigations show that the elderly population is increasing because of the health care developments. However, this group is continuously experiencing health problems for example, depression is one of their major problems. The aim of the present study is to determine the effect of group reminiscence therapy on depression of elderly resident of Shahrekord, Iran. Methods and Materials: This is a clinical trial study. The sample was consisted of 64 elderly referring to retirement centre in Shahrekord in 1385 that were selected by convenience sampling, and then divided randomly into two groups: an experimental and a control group. Group reminiscence meetings for experimental group and group meetings for control group were formed each 8 session for one hour and a half. Depression level of investigated subjects’ pre and post intervention were assessed with the use of Geriatric Depression Scale. Descriptive and conceptual statistics were used for data analysis (Chi-square Test, mean - standard deviation- Paired t-test). Results: Findings of this study showed a significant difference between pre and post intervention, where the elderly depression mean score in experimental group changed from 17.95 to 12.99 (p=0.04) but no significant difference were observed in the control group. Conclusion: Considering the result of this study, it can be suggested that group reminiscence therapy is effective on the reduction of elderly depression level. Therefore, we can use this forgotten, easy and practicable and cheap technique in all nursing-homes and even at home

    No full text
Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) exhibit high efficiency and power density, and have already been employed in gearless wind turbines. In the gearless wind turbines, due to the removal of the gearbox, the cogging torque is an important issue. Therefore, in this paper, at first, design of a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator for a 2MW gearless horizontal-axis wind turbine, according to torque-speed and capability curves, is presented. For estimation of cogging torque in PMSGs, an analytical method is used. Performance and accuracy of this method is compared with the results of Finite Element Method (FEM). Considering the effect of dominant design parameters, cogging torque is efficiently reduced

Local feature fitting active contour for segmenting vessels in angiograms

    No full text
An active contour model for vascular segmentation has been proposed, by defining a new, local, feature fitting, energy function. A vesselness filter is applied to the image in a directional Hessian‐based framework. The filter output, as a feature, expresses the degree of the correspondence of each pixel to the vessel structure. By using intensity information obtained from local regions, the proposed model is able to solve the problem of intensity inhomogeneity in images. In addition, by introducing this feature into the fitting process, the model exhibits greater accuracy when compared to existing models. Experimental results from synthetic images and coronary X‐ray angiograms verify the desirable performance of the proposed model
