Gemini Spectroscopic Survey of Young Star Clusters in Merging/Interacting Galaxies. IV. Stephan's Quintet
We present a spectroscopic survey of 21 young massive clusters and complexes
and one tidal dwarf galaxy candidate (TDG) in Stephan's Quintet, an interacting
compact group of galaxies. All of the selected targets lie outside the main
galaxies of the system and are associated with tidal debris. We find clusters
with ages between a few and 125 Myr and confirm the ages estimated through HST
photometry by Fedotov et al. (2011), as well as their modelled interaction
history of the Quintet. Many of the clusters are found to be relatively
long-lived, given their spectrosopically derived ages, while their high masses
suggest that they will likely evolve to eventually become intergalactic
clusters. One cluster, T118, is particularly interesting, given its age (\sim
125 Myr), high mass (\sim 2\times10^6 M\odot) and position in the extreme outer
end of the young tidal tail. This cluster appears to be quite extended (Reff
\sim 12 - 15 pc) compared to clusters observed in galaxy disks (Reff \sim 3 - 4
pc), which confirms an effect we previously found in the tidal tails of NGC
3256, where clusters are similarly extended. We find that star and cluster
formation can proceed at a continuous pace for at least \sim 150 Myr within the
tidal debris of interacting galaxies. The spectrum of the TDG candidate is
dominated by a young population (\sim 7 Myr), and assuming a single age for the
entire region, has a mass of at least 10^6 M\odot.Comment: 37 pages, 10 Figures, 7 Tabl
Potential of Core-Collapse Supernova Neutrino Detection at JUNO
JUNO is an underground neutrino observatory under construction in Jiangmen, China. It uses 20kton liquid scintillator as target, which enables it to detect supernova burst neutrinos of a large statistics for the next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and also pre-supernova neutrinos from the nearby CCSN progenitors. All flavors of supernova burst neutrinos can be detected by JUNO via several interaction channels, including inverse beta decay, elastic scattering on electron and proton, interactions on C12 nuclei, etc. This retains the possibility for JUNO to reconstruct the energy spectra of supernova burst neutrinos of all flavors. The real time monitoring systems based on FPGA and DAQ are under development in JUNO, which allow prompt alert and trigger-less data acquisition of CCSN events. The alert performances of both monitoring systems have been thoroughly studied using simulations. Moreover, once a CCSN is tagged, the system can give fast characterizations, such as directionality and light curve
Detection of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO
As an underground multi-purpose neutrino detector with 20 kton liquid scintillator, Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). Typical supernova models predict 2-4 events per year within the optimal observation window in the JUNO detector. The dominant background is from the neutral-current (NC) interaction of atmospheric neutrinos with 12C nuclei, which surpasses the DSNB by more than one order of magnitude. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty of NC background from the spread of a variety of data-driven models and further developed a method to determine NC background within 15\% with {\it{in}} {\it{situ}} measurements after ten years of running. Besides, the NC-like backgrounds can be effectively suppressed by the intrinsic pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities of liquid scintillators. In this talk, I will present in detail the improvements on NC background uncertainty evaluation, PSD discriminator development, and finally, the potential of DSNB sensitivity in JUNO
Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO
Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical
events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before
(pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the
multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the
monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and
SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is
a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The
real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the
electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to
ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming
a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to
the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos
up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30 for the case
of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is
evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay
interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert,
can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the
next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

Immobility-associated thromboprotection is conserved across mammalian species from bear to human
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) comprising deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Short-term immobility-related conditions are a major risk factor for the development of VTE. Paradoxically, long-term immobilized free-ranging hibernating brown bears and paralyzed spinal cord injury (SCI) patients are protected from VTE. Here we aimed to identify mechanisms of immobility-associated VTE protection in a cross-species approach. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics revealed an antithrombotic signature in platelets of hibernating brown bears with heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) as most substantially reduced protein. HSP47 downregulation or ablation attenuated immune cell activation and NET formation, contributing to thromboprotection in bears, SCI patients and mice. This cross-species conserved platelet signature may give rise to antithrombotic therapeutics and prognostic markers beyond immobility-associated VTE
ECMO for COVID-19 patients in Europe and Israel
Since March 15th, 2020, 177 centres from Europe and Israel have joined the study, routinely reporting on the ECMO support they provide to COVID-19 patients. The mean annual number of cases treated with ECMO in the participating centres before the pandemic (2019) was 55. The number of COVID-19 patients has increased rapidly each week reaching 1531 treated patients as of September 14th. The greatest number of cases has been reported from France (n = 385), UK (n = 193), Germany (n = 176), Spain (n = 166), and Italy (n = 136) .The mean age of treated patients was 52.6 years (range 16â80), 79% were male. The ECMO configuration used was VV in 91% of cases, VA in 5% and other in 4%. The mean PaO2 before ECMO implantation was 65 mmHg. The mean duration of ECMO support thus far has been 18 days and the mean ICU length of stay of these patients was 33 days. As of the 14th September, overall 841 patients have been weaned from ECMO
support, 601 died during ECMO support, 71 died after withdrawal of ECMO, 79 are still receiving ECMO support and for 10 patients status n.a. . Our preliminary data suggest that patients placed
on ECMO with severe refractory respiratory or cardiac failure secondary to COVID-19 have a reasonable (55%) chance of survival. Further extensive data analysis is expected to provide invaluable information on the demographics, severity of illness, indications and different ECMO management strategies in these patients

LILac Energy Upgrade to 13 MeV
In the frame of the NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) ion collider upgrade a new light ion LINAC for protons and ions will be built in collaboration between JINR and BEVATECH GmbH. While ions with a mass-to-charge ratio up to 3 will be fed into the NUCLOTRON ring with an energy of 7 MeV/u, protons are supposed to be accelerated up to an energy of 13 MeV using a third IH structure. This energy upgrade comprises a third IH structure, a dual-use Debuncher cavity as well as an extension of the LLRF control system built on MicroTCA technology
The genetic landscape of choroid plexus tumors in children and adults
Background. Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are intraventricular brain tumors predominantly arising in children but also affecting adults. In most cases, driver mutations have not been identified, although there are reports of frequent chromosome-wide copy-number alterations and TP53 mutations, especially in choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs). Methods. DNA methylation profiling and RNA-sequencing was performed in a series of 47 CPTs. Samples comprised 35 choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs), 6 atypical choroid plexus papillomas (aCPPs) and 6 CPCs plus three recurrences thereof. Targeted TP53 and TERT promotor sequencing was performed in all samples. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and linked-read whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed in 25 and 4 samples, respectively. Results. Tumors comprised the molecular subgroups "pediatric A" (N=11), "pediatric B" (N=12) and "adult" (N=27). Copy-number alterations mainly represented whole-chromosomal alterations with subgroup-specific enrichments (gains of Chr1, 2 and 21q in "pediatric B" and gains of Chr5 and 9 and loss of Chr21q in "adult"). RNA sequencing yielded a novel CCDC47-PRKCA fusion transcript in one adult choroid plexus papilloma patient with aggressive clinical course; an underlying Chr17 inversion was demonstrated by linked-read WGS. WES and targeted sequencing showed TP53 mutations in 7/47 CPTs (15%), five of which were children. On the contrary, TERT promoter mutations were encountered in 7/28 adult patients (25%) and associated with shorter progression-free survival (log-rank test, p=0.015). Conclusion. Pediatric CPTs lack recurrent driver alterations except for TP53, whereas CPTs in adults show TERT promoter mutations or a novel CCDC47-PRKCA gene fusion, being associated with a more unfavorable clinical course
