A journey into e-resource administration hell
The author discusses the administrative problems which can still occur when looking after a large and complex portfolio of electronic resources, and focuses on some of the recurring ânightmaresâ involving e-journals in particular. Amongst the subjects discussed are lost archives, activation codes which change without anyone being told, unreasonable expiry dates, poor service, wandering URLs, lack of publicity, failure to keep licensing conditions, and title changes. The article ends with a look at some emerging examples of excellent practice to do with e-journal management, proving all parties involved can work together to ensure a smooth and efficient service
The rhesus measurement system: A new instrument for space research
The Rhesus Research Facility (RRF) is a research environment designed to study the effects of microgravity using rhesus primates as human surrogates. This experimental model allows investigators to study numerous aspects of microgravity exposure without compromising crew member activities. Currently, the RRF is slated for two missions to collect its data, the first mission is SLS-3, due to fly in late 1995. The RRF is a joint effort between the United States and France. The science and hardware portions of the project are being shared between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and France's Centre National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The RRF is composed of many different subsystems in order to acquire data, provide life support, environmental enrichment, computer facilities and measurement capabilities for two rhesus primates aboard a nominal sixteen day mission. One of these subsystems is the Rhesus Measurement System (RMS). The RMS is designed to obtain in-flight physiological measurements from sensors interfaced with the subject. The RMS will acquire, preprocess, and transfer the physiologic data to the Flight Data System (FDS) for relay to the ground during flight. The measurements which will be taken by the RMS during the first flight will be respiration, measured at two different sites; electromyogram (EMG) at three different sites; electroencephalogram (EEG); electrocardiogram (ECG); and body temperature. These measurements taken by the RMS will assist the research team in meeting the science objectives of the RRF project

Effects in Chern-Simons with a Four-Fermi Interaction
We investigate the effects of the Chern-Simons coupling on the high energy
behavior in the -dimensional Chern-Simons QED with a four-Fermi
interaction. Using the expansion we discuss the Chern-Simons effects on
the critical four-Fermi coupling at and the function around
it. High-energy behavior of Green's functions is also discussed. By explicit
calculation, we find that the radiative correction to the Chern-Simons coupling
vanishes at in the broken phase of the dynamical parity symmetry. We
argue that no radiative corrections to the Chern-Simons term arise at higher
orders in the expansion.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures not included, LaTeX, SNUTP 92-9
Almost-zero-energy Eigenvalues of Some Broken Supersymmetric Systems
For a quantum mechanical system with broken supersymmetry, we present a
simple method of determining the ground state when the corresponding energy
eigenvalue is sufficiently small. A concise formula is derived for the
approximate ground state energy in an associated, well-separated, asymmetric
double-well-type potential. Our discussion is also relevant for the analysis of
the fermion bound state in the kink-antikink scalar background.Comment: revised version, to be pubilshed in PR
On Topologically Massive Spin-2 Gauge Theories beyond Three Dimensions
We investigate in which sense, at the linearized level, one can extend the 3D
topologically massive gravity theory beyond three dimensions. We show that, for
each k=1,2,3... a free topologically massive gauge theory in 4k-1 dimensions
can be defined describing a massive "spin-2" particle provided one uses a
non-standard representation of the massive "spin-2" state which makes use of a
two-column Young tableau where each column is of height 2k-1. We work out the
case of k=2, i.e. 7D, and show, by canonical analysis, that the model
describes, unitarily, 35 massive "spin-2" degrees of freedom. The issue of
interactions is discussed and compared with the three-dimensional situation.Comment: 14 pages. v2: minor changes - published versio
Comparing the unmatched count technique and direct self-report for sensitive health-risk behaviors in HIV+ adults
Researchers often rely on self-report measures to assess sensitive health-risk behaviors in HIV+ individuals, yet the accuracy of self-report has been questioned, particularly when inquiring about behaviors that may be embarrassing, risky, and/or taboo. We compared an anonymous reporting methodâthe Unmatched Count Technique (UCT)âto direct self-report in order to assess reporting differences for several health-risk behaviors related to medication adherence and sexual risk. Contrary to hypotheses, the UCT only produced a significantly higher estimated base rate for one sensitive behavior: reporting medication adherence to one\u27s physician, which may have been contextually-primed by our study design. Our results suggest that anonymous reporting methods may not increase disclosure compared to direct self-report when assessing several health-risk behaviors in HIV+ research volunteers. However, our results also suggest that contextual factors should be considered and investigated further, as they may influence perception of sensitive behavior
Four Fermion Field Theories and the Chern-Simons Field: A Renormalization Group Study
In (2+1) dimensions, we consider the model of a flavor, two-component
fermionic field interacting through a Chern-Simons field besides a four fermion
self-interaction which consists of a linear combination of the Gross-Neveu and
Thirring like terms. The four fermion interaction is not perturbatively
renormalizable and the model is taken as an effective field theory in the
region of low momenta. Using Zimmerman procedure for reducing coupling
constants, it is verified that, for small values of the Chern-Simons parameter,
the origin is an infrared stable fixed point but changes to ultraviolet stable
as becomes bigger than a critical . Composite operators are
also analyzed and it is shown that a specific four fermion interaction has an
improved ultraviolet behavior as increases.Comment: 9 pages, revte
Reconstruction of field theory from excitation spectra of defects
We show how to reconstruct a field theory from the spectrum of bound states
on a topological defect. We apply our recipe to the case of kinks in 1+1
dimensions with one or two bound states. Our recipe successfully yields the
sine-Gordon and field theories when suitable bound state
spectra are assumed. The recipe can also be used to globally reconstruct the
inflaton potential of inflationary cosmology if the inflaton produces a
topological defect. We discuss how defects can provide ``smoking gun'' evidence
for a class of inflationary models.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Included proof (Appendix B) that wall
fluctuation potentials have supersymmetric form. Added reference
