    Anaerobic digestion of whole-crop winter wheat silage for renewable energy production

    With biogas production expanding across Europe in response to renewable energy incentives, a wider variety of crops need to be considered as feedstock. Maize, the most commonly used crop at present, is not ideal in cooler, wetter regions, where higher energy yields per hectare might be achieved with other cereals. Winter wheat is a possible candidate because, under these conditions, it has a good biomass yield, can be ensiled, and can be used as a whole crop material. The results showed that, when harvested at the medium milk stage, the specific methane yield was 0.32 m3 CH4 kg–1 volatile solids added, equal to 73% of the measured calorific value. Using crop yield values for the north of England, a net energy yield of 146–155 GJ ha–1 year–1 could be achieved after taking into account both direct and indirect energy consumption in cultivation, processing through anaerobic digestion, and spreading digestate back to the land. The process showed some limitations, however: the relatively low density of the substrate made it difficult to mix the digester, and there was a buildup of soluble chemical oxygen demand, which represented a loss in methane potential and may also have led to biofoaming. The high nitrogen content of the wheat initially caused problems, but these could be overcome by acclimatization.     <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance a newly developed nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite, OSTIM<sup>® </sup>following functional implantation in femoral sites in thirty-eight sheep for 1, 2 or 3 months. Ostim<sup>® </sup>35 was compared to an established calcium phosphate, Alpha BSM<sup>®</sup>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Biomechanical testing, μ-CT analysis, histological and histomorphological analyses were conducted to compare the treatments including evaluation of bone regeneration level, material degradation, implant biomechanical characteristics.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The micro-computed tomography (μCT) analysis and macroscopic observations showed that Ostim<sup>® </sup>seemed to diffuse easily particularly when the defects were created in a cancellous bone area. Alpha BSM<sup>® </sup>remained in the defect.</p> <p>The performance of Ostim was good in terms of mechanical properties that were similar to Alpha BSM<sup>® </sup>and the histological analysis showed that the bone regeneration was better with Ostim<sup>® </sup>than with Alpha BSM<sup>®</sup>. The histomorphometric analysis confirmed the qualitative analysis and showed more bone ingrowth inside the implanted material with Ostim<sup>® </sup>when compared to Alpha BSM <sup>® </sup>at all time points.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The successful bone healing with osseous consolidation verifies the importance of the nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite in the treatment of metaphyseal osseous volume defects in the metaphyseal spongiosa.</p

    Active Whey Protein Edible Films and Coatings Incorporating Lactobacillus buchneri for Penicillium nordicum Control in Cheese

    Fungal contamination of food is responsible for health issues and food waste. In this work, the incorporation of a lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with antifungal properties (Lactobacillus buchneri UTAD104) into whey protein-based films and coatings was tested for the control of an ochratoxigenic fungi (Penicillium nordicum) in a cheese matrix. The incorporation of L. buchneri cells resulted in thicker films with less luminosity than control films and colour alteration. Nevertheless, cells inclusion did not alter moisture content, water vapour permeability, mechanical properties, hydrophobicity and chemical structure of the films. Whey protein films were able to maintain the viability of L. buchneri UTAD104 cells in 105 CFU/mL after 30 days of storage at 25 \textdegreeC. When applied in cheese, films and coatings containing L. buchneri cells prevented fungal contamination for at least 30 days, while control cheeses with films and coatings either without LAB or with Lactobacillus casei UM3 (a strain without antifungal ability) showed fungal contamination during that period. Ochratoxin A was not found in cheeses treated with films and coatings containing L. buchneri UTAD104.     Infrared spectral properties of germ, pericarp, and endosperm sections of sound wheat kernels and those damaged by Fusarium graminearum

    Mid-infrared attenuated total reflection (Mid-IR-ATR) spectra (4000–380 cmˉ¹) of pericarp, germ, and endosperm sections from sound and Fusarium-damaged wheat kernels of cultivars Everest and Tomahawk were collected using a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer. The differences in infrared absorption bands between sound and Fusarium-damaged kernels were examined. Absorption bands in which differences were identified were compared with the mid-IR-ATR absorption bands of deoxynivalenol (DON) and Fusarium graminearum hyphae. Marked differences in absorption patterns were observed between sound and Fusarium-damaged pericarp and germ spectra, whereas those differences were negligible in the endosperm spectra. Fusarium-damaged pericarp and germ spectra exhibited a shift in the peak position of the band near 1035 cmˉ¹ along with increased absorptions at 1160, 1203, 1313, and 1375 cmˉ¹, likely due to the influence of DON and fungi in the Fusarium-damaged kernel tissue matrix. These results suggest that infrared spectroscopy can detect DON in the surface tissues of Fusarium-damaged wheat kernels
