A Post Title-IX Analysis of American Sports Culture: The Women Aren’t Done Yet

    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to examine the disparities women continue to face in the realm of athletics since the enactment of Title IX in 1972. This research is important because throughout history women have been left behind in society compared to men and athletics is just another social space where that occurs. Additionally, sports are so important to American culture, yet women still struggle to gain the respect and recognition they deserve. Feminist theory suggests that sports are gendered activities because the knowledge is grounded in the values and experiences of men. This thesis uses interview and survey analysis to understand equity within collegiate sports. It was found that 82.1% of the surveyed collegiate athletes believe there are areas for improvement for women in athletics at the collegiate level. In the 49 years since the passing of Title IX, these findings suggest that structural change is happening at a slow, yet steady rate. Finally, this thesis leads to possible suggestions for change and allows for further discussion regarding the future of women’s sports

Incremental syntactic generation of natural language with tree adjoining grammars

This document combines the basic ideas of my master´s thesis - which has been developped within the WIP project - with new results from my work as a member of WIP, as far as they concern the integration and further development of the implemented system. ISGT (in German \u27Inkrementeller Syntaktischer Generierer natürlicher Sprache mit TAGs´) is a syntactic component for a text generation system and is based on Tree Adjoining Grammars. It is lexically guided and consists of two levels of syntactic processing: A component that computes the hierarchical structure of the sentence under construction (hierarchical level) and a component that computes the word position and utters the sentence (positional level). The central aim of this work has been to design a syntactic generator that computes sentences in an incremental fashion. The realization of the incremental syntactic generator has been supported by a distributed parallel model that is used to speed up the computation of single parts of the sentence

Eyestrain: a behavioural disorder: an investigation to test the hypothesis that eyestrain is due to retinal alteration

In general, the purpose of this investigation is to bring to light clearly and concisely the facts and theories relating to the condition termed Eyestrain, a hitherto neglected and inadequately explored subject. That there is a lamentable inadequacy of any really complete research into the problem under discussion, is reflected in the dearth of relative comprehensive literature. The more specific aims of this thesis have been set dom in detail in another chapter

With the increasing capacity of AI systems the design of human--computer interfaces has become a favorite research topic in AI. In this paper we focus on aspects of the output of a computer. The architecture of a sentence generation component -- embedded in the WIP system -- is described. The main emphasis is laid on the motivation for the incremental style of processing and the encoding of adequate linguistic units as rules of a Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar with Unification

Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAGs) - as used in the parsing algorithm of Harbusch - can be improved with respect to compactness and transparency for the task of grammar design. We have combined the two formalisms Tree Adjoining Grammar and Unification in order to benefit from their respective advantages. Our approach is contrasted with the approach of Vijay-Shanker

Rotating Black Holes with Monopole Hair

We study rotating black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. These black holes emerge from static black holes with monopole hair when a finite horizon angular velocity is imposed. At critical values of the horizon angular velocity and the horizon radius, they bifurcate with embedded Kerr-Newman black holes. The non-Abelian black holes possess an electric dipole moment, but no electric charge is induced by the rotation. We deduce that gravitating regular monopoles possess a gyroelectric ratio g_el=2.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
