    Postharvest conservation of the tuberous roots of Pachyrhizus Ahipa (Wedd) Parodi

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o período de armazenamento em diferentes temperaturas e embalagens na conservação das raízes de Pachyrhizus ahipa. As raízes foram colhidas, lavadas e armazenadas em bandejas de isopor, no refrigerador, câmara fria e à temperatura ambiente. As embalagens utilizadas foram PVC, saco plástico e sem embalagem (controle). As bandejas foram retiradas do seu ambiente de armazenamento e analisadas quanto a acidez total titulável, sólidos solúveis totais, pH, teores de cinzas, lipídios, carboidrato total e proteínas em base seca. A menor perda de massa das raízes foi em câmara fria e em saco plástico. A ATT manteve-se maior nas raízes armazenadas em câmara fria e na embalagem de PVC; os menores teores de SST foram observados em câmara fria não variando entre as embalagens. em todos os tratamentos a porcentagem média de carboidratos foi 84,9%. A porcentagem de lipídios foi maior nas raízes armazenadas em temperatura ambiente, entretanto, o teor de proteína e cinzas foram maiores nas armazenadas na geladeira. A melhor condição para o armazenamento das raízes é em câmara fria e embaladas com saco plástico, onde as raízes mantiveram a qualidade apropriada para comercialização durante até 30 dias de armazenamento.This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of storage periods on the conservation of Pachyrhizus ahipa roots at different temperatures and packaging materials. The roots were harvested, washed, packed in PVC, plastic bags, without wrappings (control) and stored in polystyrene trays in refrigerators, or cold chambers, or at room temperature. Total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), pH, as well as their ash, lipid, total carbohydrate and protein (dry basis) contents were analyzed. The lowest loss of root fresh weight was observed in the cold chamber and plastic bags. The TTA remained higher among roots stored in the cold chamber and in PVC packaging. The lowest TSS contents were observed for roots stored in the cold chamber, and these did not vary among the packing materials. The average carbohydrate content percentage for all treatments was 84.9%. The percentage of lipids was highest in roots stored at room temperature while protein and ash contents were highest in roots under refrigeration. The best storage conditions for roots are plastic bags packaging in a cold chamber, with the roots retaining appropriate quality for commercialization for up to 30 days.Universidade Federal da Grande DouradosUniversidade Estadual de São Paul

    Osmotic conditioning and shading on the germination and on the initial growth of Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão seedlings

    The present work aimed to evaluate the osmotic conditioning and shading on the germination and on the initial growth of aroeira seedlings. The seeds were pre-imbibed in solutions with different concentrations of PEG (polyethylene glycol) and KNO3 and incubated at 10°C and 20°C temperatures, during 0 (control), 12 and 24 hours. After these periods, the seeds were dried until they reached the initial levels of humidity. After that, they were put for germinating in BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) chambers, at alternated 20-30°C. The control treatment and the pre-conditionings that presented the best results in BOD germination were selected, PEG (-1.0 MPa) + KNO3 (-1.0 MPa) and KNO3 (-1.0 MPa), with pre-imbibition for 12 h and incubated in BOD at 20°C. The seeds were sowed on trays and then they were transplanted, keeping under a net covered with 50% and 70% of shading and at sunlight. The osmotic conditioning did not change the seeds germination in BOD, but the highest aerial part size was observed in PEG -1.0 MPa + KNO3-1.0 MPa treatment. The shading levels at 50% and 70% and the osmotic conditioning with PEG -1.0 MPa + KNO3-1.0 MPa offered a higher emergence in a greenhouse condition; however, at sunlight the seeds presented a better index of quality on the 145th day

    Germination of Croton urucurana L. seeds exposed to different storage temperatures and pre-germinative treatments

    The present work evaluated the germinability and vigor of Croton urucurana seeds. 1) Seeds were sorted by color (caramel, gray and black) and were subjected to seven different pre-germination treatments followed by incubation at 20ºC, 25°C or 20/30°C. 2) Seeds were stored in cold chambers or at room temperature for up to 300 days and were subsequently incubated at 20/30ºC in a germination chamber or under greenhouse conditions. Only gray seeds showed significant germination rates. The highest first count percentages of total germination and the highest germination speed indices were observed in control seeds and in those which were treated with water or 200 mg. L-1 gibberellic acid for 12 hours. Seeds stored under refrigeration showed the highest values for all of the characteristics examined, as well as less electrical conductivity of the imbibing solution. Seedlings were more vigorous when seeds were stored for 300 days in a cold chamber. The seedlings production can be increased by incubating the seeds at alternating temperatures (20/30°C). The seeds do not need pre-germination treatments.<br>O presente trabalho avaliou a germinação e vigor de sementes de Croton urucurana. 1) As sementes foram classificadas por cores (caramelo, cinza e preto) e foram submetidas a sete diferentes tratamentos pré-germinativos seguidos de incubação a 20ºC, 25°C e 20/30°C. 2) As sementes foram armazenadas em câmaras frias ou em temperatura ambiente por até 300 dias e foram posteriormente incubadas a 20/30ºC em câmara de germinação ou em condições de estufa. Somente sementes cinza apresentaram taxas significativas de germinação. As maiores percentagens de primeira contagem de germinação total e os maiores índices de velocidade de germinação foram observados em sementes de controle e naquelas que foram tratadas com água ou 200 mg L-1 de ácido giberélico por 12 horas. Sementes armazenadas sob refrigeração apresentaram os maiores valores para todas as características analisadas, assim como menor condutividade elétrica da solução de embebição. As plântulas foram mais vigorosas, quando as sementes foram armazenadas por 300 dias em câmara fria. A produção de mudas pode ser aumentada pela incubação das sementes em temperaturas alternadas (20/30°C). As sementes não necessitam de tratamentos pré-germinativos
