A computer-based system for environmental impact assessment (EIA) applications to energy power stations in Turkey: CEDINFO
WOS: 000251630100035Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a tool for decision makers to take into account the possible effects of a proposed project on the environment and is also a process for collecting the data related to a project design and project area. Different techniques are used for the EIA process. In recent years, including the design and development of databases, classification systems, computer models and expert systems have been used extensively in impact assessment studies. Knowledge-based systems referred to as expert systems and different computer-based systems are an emerging technology in information processing and are becoming increasingly useful tools in different applications areas including EIA studies. Their use for EIA has been quite limited in developing countries, because of the constraints on resources, particularly in expertise and data. In this study, a knowledge-based software-CEDINFO-developed by authors was introduced. CEDINFO to be used for EIA practices on energy-generating stations was designed based on the legal EIA process in Turkey. According to the EIA Regulation enacted in Turkey in 1993, energy-generating stations (thermal power station, hydraulic station, nuclear station) in different categories require mandatory EIA reports duly approved by The Ministry of Environment and Forestry before their construction. CEDINFO primarily aims to provide educational support for EIA practices and decision-makers on energy-generating stations. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Exploring risk perception and intention to improve the air quality
Numerous environmental issues, particularly those with higher risks, have steadily come to the forefront of the public's concerns in recent years with the increased awareness on environmental quality. For example, air pollution is one of the main causes of death worldwide and contributes to the rise in the risk of chronic diseases. In the Turkish city of Adana, air pollution has long been recognised as a serious environmental and health concern with well-documented negative consequences on human wellbeing. Although important, little is known about how the general public views the risk of air pollution. Thus, this paper focuses on risk perception and behavioural intention to air pollution. Adana city in southern Turkey was chosen as the study area. The results showed that sociodemographic factors and perceived risk of familiarity with air pollution are significant factors influencing Adana inhabitants' willingness to pay for bettering the air quality. Additionally, it implies that the authority might provide a significant contribution by creating strategies to lessen the effects of air pollution on people, particularly in cities where air pollution is a problem
Investigation on the environmental awareness level and its developing possibilities in Adana
Effective implementation of environmental conservation programs depends on the increase of environmental awareness. This study aimed to determine environmental awareness of inhabitants of Adana City, which is one of the largest and most populated cities in Turkey and is facing various environmental problems. The behaviors and thoughts of inhabitants on environmental problems were investigated through specially prepared questionnaire form. Furthermore, this study investigates the influence of the economic and socio-cultural factors on the environmental attitudes. Questionnaire study was conducted on 500 people during January-June 2005 through face to face interviewing method. According to the results of this study, the environmental awareness score was calculated as 58.4. At the same time, the women were found to be more aware than men. Also, younger generations were found to be more aware than older people
