    Get PDF
Strontium Cobalt Titanate (SCT) was synthesized via solid state route. Phase formation was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Resistive sensors were made using screen printing technique and corresponding sensing properties were investigated in dry as well as humid environment (RH 50%). Experimental results demonstrated that sensors displayed least humidity interference at 400 Ā°C. The operating temperature of the sensor was optimized for best responsiveness. These type of sensors can be effectively used in environmental monitoring of NO2 gas at low ppm

Mergers of double neutron stars with one high-spin component: brighter kilonovae and fallback accretion, weaker gravitational waves

Neutron star mergers where both stars have negligible spins are commonly considered as the most likely, "standard" case. But based on observed systems, we estimate that actually a non-negligible fraction of all double neutron star mergers (āˆ¼\sim 5 %) may contain one millisecond component. We use the Lagrangian Numerical Relativity code SPHINCS_BSSN to simulate mergers where one star has no spin and the other has a dimensionless spin parameter of Ļ‡=0.5\chi=0.5. These mergers exhibit several distinct signatures compared to irrotational cases. Morphologically, they are similar to unequal mass mergers and they form in particular only one, very pronounced spiral arm. Compared to the non-spinning cases, they dynamically eject an order of magnitude more mass of unshocked material at the original low electron fraction of the neutron stars and therefore produce particularly bright, red kilonovae and brighter kilonova afterglows months after the merger. We also find that the spinning cases have significantly more fallback accretion, with implications for late-time X-ray flares and the duration of the associated gamma-ray burst. Overall, the spinning case collisions are substantially less violent and they emit smaller amounts of shock-generated semi-relativistic material and therefore produce less pronounced blue/UV kilonova precursor signals. Their post-merger gravitational wave signal is weaker and, during the simulated time, substantially smaller amounts of energy and angular momentum are emitted. Therefore the central remnant contains a larger angular momentum reservoir and could remain an "active engine" for a longer time.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, submitte

Evaluation of the association between dyslipidemia and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy: a nested case control study

Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are an elusive group of diseases with multifactorial etiopathologies and varied manifestation. Abnormal pre pregnancy lipid profile is shown to have a positive correlation with endothelial dysfunction which in turn leads to development of hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Methods: A total of 222 pregnant women who were aged between 18-35 years, with no obstetric and medical risk factors and less than 16 weeks of gestation who gave informed written consent were recruited for the study. Their baseline demographics and fasting blood samples were collected, blood samples were centrifuged, and serum was stored at -80-degree celsius. Patients were followed up till delivery and those with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (n=22) was identified, defined as case. Control was selected after matching for body mass index and frozen serum samples were analyzed. Results: Overall incidence of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy in the study group was 12.4%. The mean early trimester fasting lipid values were higher in patients who developed hypertensive disorders, difference in mean between cases and controls was TCĀ  - 16.25 mg/dl (p-0.061), TGL- 21.45 mg/dl (p-0.143),Ā  LDL- 2.4 mg/dl (p-0.82) and for HDL 4.55 mg/dl (p-0.25). However, on stratification of early trimester fasting lipid level based on National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) criteria, Total cholesterol level greater than 160 mg/dl showed an odds ratio of 12.66 (p-0). Patients with early trimester fasting total cholesterol levels greater than 160mg/dl has a higher risk of developing hypertensive disorder in pregnancy.

Needle loss in subclavian vein during central venous catheter placement: Case report of a rare complication

    Get PDF
We present a case of needle separation during central venous catheter (CVC) placement in a super morbidly obese patient with subsequent surgical intervention in its retrieval. This complication, potentially lethal due to the relevant anatomy of such a procedure, alerts critical care physicians and surgeons to the possibility of equipment failure and stresses proper technique in what has become a routine procedure. It also emphasizes the routine use of ultrasound-guidance for cannulation in patients of any body habitus. While infection and arrhythmia are the generally known complications of CVC placement, clinicians must be alert to unanticipated events such as needle separation. In our case, the retrieval of this needle required multi-disciplinary intervention between radiology, critical care, vascular surgery, and thoracic surgery. Our event stresses hypervigilance to complications in a common procedure

Histological subclassification of cirrhosis based on histological-haemodynamic correlation

Background: Determining a relationship between specific histological parameters in cirrhosis and hepatic venous pressure gradient can be used to subclassify cirrhosis. Aim: To determine the relationship between hepatic venous pressure gradient and specific histological parameters in cirrhosis. Methods: Forty-seven patients (mean age: 46.2 ± 13.6 years; 36 male) with biopsy-proven cirrhosis and hepatic venous pressure gradient measurements within 1 month of biopsy were studied. The following histological parameters were scored semiquantitatively: nodule size, loss of portal tracts and central veins, portal inflammation, periportal inflammation, bile duct proliferation, lobular inflammation, ballooning, fatty change, cholestasis and septal thickness. Results: On multiple ordinal regression analysis, small nodule size (odds ratio: 21.0; 95% confidence interval: 2.1-208.2, P = 0.009) and thick septa (OR: 42.6; CI: 2.3-783.7, P = 0.011) were significantly associated with the presence of clinically significant portal hypertension. A score was assigned to each of the two parameters (nodule size: large = 1, medium = 2, small = 3 and septal thickness: thin = 1, medium = 2, thick = 3). Two subcategories were devised based on the composite score: category A (n = 12): score 1-3 and category B (n = 35): score 4-6. On ordinal regression, subcategory B (OR: 15.5; CI: 3.3-74.2, P = 0.001) was significantly associated with clinically significant portal hypertension. Conclusion: Small nodularity and thick septa are independent predictors of the presence of clinically significant portal hypertension

Serious physical fighting and gambling-related attitudes and behaviors in adolescents

    Get PDF
Background and aims: Physical fighting and gambling are common risk behaviors among adolescents. Prior studies have found associations among these behaviors in adolescents but have not examined systematically the health and gambling correlates of problem-gambling severity amongst youth stratified by fight involvement. Methods: Survey data were used from 2,276 Connecticut high school adolescents regarding their physical fight involvement, gambling behaviors and perceptions, and health and functioning. Gambling perceptions and correlates of problem-gambling severity were examined in fighting and non-fighting adolescents. Results: Gambling perceptions were more permissive and at-risk/problem gambling was more frequent amongst adolescents reporting serious fights versus those denying serious fights. A stronger relationship between problem-gambling severity and regular smoking was observed for adolescents involved in fights. Discussion and conclusions: The more permissive gambling attitudes and heavier gambling associated with serious fights in high school students suggest that youth who engage in physical fights warrant enhanced prevention efforts related to gambling. The stronger relationship between tobacco smoking and problem-gambling severity amongst youth engaging in serious fights suggest that fighting youth who smoke might warrant particular screening for gambling problems and subsequent interventions

Weapon-Carrying is Associated with More Permissive Gambling Attitudes and Perceptions and At-Risk/Problem Gambling in Adolescents

Background and aims: A recent call to action highlighted the need to understand the relationship between problem gambling, violence, and health/functioning. As weapon-carrying and gambling behaviors are prevalent in adolescents, this study systematically examined relationships between weapon-carrying status and measures of problem gambling severity and gambling perceptions and attitudes, as well as how weapon-carrying status moderated relationships between problem gambling severity and measures of health/functioning and gambling behavior. Methods: Participants were 2,301 Connecticut high-school adolescents. Ļ‡2 and logistic regression models were conducted. Results: Weapon-carriers reported greater problem gambling severity, more permissive gambling perceptions, greater parental approval of gambling, and more family gambling concerns, compared to non-weapon-carriers. At-risk/problem gambling was more strongly associated with family, peers, and adult gambling partners among non-weapon-carriers (vs. weapon-carriers) and with machine gambling among weapon-carriers (vs. non-weapon-carriers). Discussion and conclusions: Greater problem gambling severity and more permissive gambling perceptions and perceived parental approval of gambling in weapon-carrying adolescents suggest that parentā€“child relationships are important to be considered in prevention efforts. The moderated relationship by weapon-carrying status between problem gambling severity and gambling partners suggests a problem gambling risk group that may be less linked to gambling with traditional social support groups, and this group may benefit from targeted interventions
