A mid-IR study of Hickson Compact Groups II. Multi-wavelength analysis of the complete GALEX-Spitzer Sample
We present a comprehensive study on the impact of the environment of compact
galaxy groups on the evolution of their members using a multi-wavelength
analysis, from the UV to the infrared, for a sample of 32 Hickson compact
groups (HCGs) containing 135 galaxies. Fitting the SEDs of all galaxies with
the state-of-the-art model of da Cunha (2008) we can accurately calculate their
mass, SFR, and extinction, as well as estimate their infrared luminosity and
dust content. We compare our findings with samples of field galaxies,
early-stage interacting pairs, and cluster galaxies with similar data. We find
that classifying the groups as dynamically "old" or "young", depending on
whether or not at least one quarter of their members are early-type systems, is
physical and consistent with past classifications of HCGs based on their atomic
gas content. [...ABRIDGED...] We also examine their SF properties, UV-optical
and mid-IR colors, and we conclude that all the evidence point to an
evolutionary scenario in which the effects of the group environment and the
properties of the galaxy members are not instantaneous. Early on, the influence
of close companions to group galaxies is similar to the one of galaxy pairs in
the field. However, as the time progresses, the effects of tidal torques and
minor merging, shape the morphology and star formation history of the group
galaxies, leading to an increase of the fraction of early-type members and a
rapid built up of the stellar mass in the remaining late-type galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Figure resolution degraded for arXiv

Testing for cointegration using induced-order statistics.
In this paper we explore the usefulness of induced-order statistics in the characterization of integrated series and of cointegration relationships. We propose a non-parametric test statistic for testing the null hypothesis of two independent random walks against wide cointegrating alternatives including monotonic nonlinearities and certain types of level shifts in the cointegration relationship. We call our testing device the induced-order Kolmogorov?Smirnov cointegration test (KS), since it is constructed from the induced-order statistics of the series, and we derive its limiting distribution. This non-parametric statistic endows the test with a number of desirable properties: invariance to monotonic transformations of the series, and robustness for the presence of important parameter shifts. By Monte Carlo simulations we analyze the small sample properties of this test. Our simulation results show the robustness of the induced order cointegration test against departures from linear and constant parameter models.Unit root tests; Cointegration tests; Nonlinearity; Robustness; Induced order statistics; Engle and Granger test;
Creating a Traversable Wormhole
We argue that one can nucleate a traversable wormhole via a nonperturbative
process in quantum gravity. To support this, we construct spacetimes in which
there are instantons giving a finite probability for a test cosmic string to
break and produce two particles on its ends. One should be able to replace the
particles with small black holes with only small changes to the spacetime away
from the horizons. The black holes are then created with their horizons
identified, so this is an example of nucleating a wormhole. Unlike previous
examples where the created black holes accelerate apart, in our case they
remain essentially at rest. This is important since wormholes become harder and
harder to make traversable as their mouths become widely separated, and since
traversability can be destroyed by Unruh radiation. In our case, back-reaction
from quantum fields can make the wormhole traversable.Comment: 24 pages, 6 Figs, v2: comment added and a few typos correcte
Massless and massive one-loop three-point functions in negative dimensional approach
In this article we present the complete massless and massive one-loop
triangle diagram results using the negative dimensional integration method
(NDIM). We consider the following cases: massless internal fields; one massive,
two massive with the same mass m and three equal masses for the virtual
particles. Our results are given in terms of hypergeometric and
hypergeometric-type functions of external momenta (and masses for the massive
cases) where the propagators in the Feynman integrals are raised to arbitrary
exponents and the dimension of the space-time D. Our approach reproduces the
known results as well as other solutions as yet unknown in the literature.
These new solutions occur naturally in the context of NDIM revealing a
promising technique to solve Feynman integrals in quantum field theories
