A practical approach to communicating benefit-risk decisions of medicines to stakeholders.

No use, distribution or reproduction is permitted which does not comply with these terms.Purpose: The importance of a framework for a systematic structured assessment of the benefits and risks has been established, but in addition, it is necessary that the benefit-risk decisions and the processes to derive those decisions are documented and communicated to various stakeholders for accountability. Hence there is now a need to find appropriate tools to enhance communication between regulators and other stakeholders, in a manner that would uphold transparency, consistency and standards. Methods: A retrospective, non-comparative study was conducted to determine the applicability and practicality of a summary template in documenting benefit-risk assessment and communicating benefit-risk balance and conclusions for reviewers to other stakeholders. The benefit-risk (BR) Summary Template and its User Manual was evaluated by 12 reviewers within a regulatory agency in Singapore, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). Results: The BR Summary Template was found to be adequate in documenting benefits, risks, relevant summaries and conclusions, while the User Manual was useful in guiding the reviewer in completing the template. The BR Summary Template was also considered a useful tool for communicating benefit-risk decisions to a variety of stakeholders. A free boundary problem arising in a model for shallow water entry at small deadrise angles
A free boundary problem arising in a model for inviscid, incompressible shallow water entry at small deadrise angles is derived and analysed. The relationship between this novel free boundary problem and the well-known viscous squeeze film problem is described. An inverse method is used to construct explicit solutions for certain body profiles and to find criteria under which the splash sheet can `split'. A variational inequality formulation, conservation of certain generalized moments and the Schwarz function formulation are introduced
Investigation of Feasible Pavement Design Alternatives for WisDOT
The current pavement design and selection process of WisDOT for all new pavements or reconstructions of existing pavement structures provides for the design of one asphaltic concrete (AC) and one portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement alternative. Life-cycle costs analyses are then used to determine the preferred alternative for construction. Previous restrictions in the WisDOT pavement selection process have essentially excluded the construction of thick AC (AC thickness \u3e 150 mm) and thin PCC (PCC thickness \u3c 225 mm) pavements and thus the validity of current life-cycle cost inputs for these pavement types is under question.
This report presents a performance analysis of existing thick AC and thin PCC pavements constructed in and around Wisconsin. The performance trends developed indicate current design assumptions utilized by WisDOT, related to the expected service life to first rehabilitation of AC and PCC pavements, may also be used for thick AC and thin PCC pavements
Performance, Validation and Testing with the Network Simulation Cradle
Much current simulation of TCP makes use of simplified models of TCP, which is a large and complex protocol with many variations possible between implementations. We use direct execution of real world network stacks in the network simulator ns-2 to compare TCP performance between implementations and reproduce existing work. A project called The Network Simulation Cradle provides the real world network stacks and we show how it can be used for performance evaluation and validation. There are large differences in performance between simplified TCP models and TCP implementations in some situations. Such differences are apparent in some reproduced research, with results using the Network Simulation Cradle very different from the results produced with the ns-2 TCP models. In other cases, using the real implementations gives very similar results, validating the original research

Using Links to prototype a Database Wiki
Both relational databases and wikis have strengths that make them attractive for use in collaborative applications. In the last decade, database-backed Web applications have been used extensively to develop valuable shared biological references called curated databases. Databases offer many advantages such as scalability, query optimization and concurrency control, but are not easy to use and lack other features needed for collaboration. Wikis have become very popular for early-stage biocuration projects because they are easy to use, encourage sharing and collaboration, and provide built-in support for archiving, history-tracking and annotation. However, curation projects often outgrow the limited capabilities of wikis for structuring and efficiently querying data at scale, necessitating a painful phase transition to a database-backed Web application. We perceive a need for a new class of general-purpose system, which we call a Database Wiki, that combines flexible wiki-like support for collaboration with robust database-like capabilities for structuring and querying data. This paper presents DBWiki, a design prototype for such a system written in the Web programming language Links. We present the architecture, typical use, and wiki markup language design for DBWiki and discuss features of Links that provided unique advantages for rapid Web/database application prototyping
Quasipolynomial size frege proofs of Frankl's Theorem on the trace of sets
We extend results of Bonet, Buss and Pitassi on Bondy's Theorem and of Nozaki, Arai and Arai on Bollobas' Theorem by proving that Frankl's Theorem on the trace of sets has quasipolynomial size Frege proofs. For constant values of the parameter t, we prove that Frankl's Theorem has polynomial size AC(0)-Frege proofs from instances of the pigeonhole principle.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
THE ECOLOGY OF MUTUALISM
Elementary ecology texts tell us that organisms interact in three fundamen tal ways, generally given the names competition, predation, and mutualism. The third member has gotten short shrift (264), and even its name is not generally agreed on. Terms that may be considered synonyms, in whole or part, are symbiosis, commensalism, cooperation, protocooperation, mutual aid, facilitation, reciprocal altruism, and entraide. We use the term mutualism, defined as an interaction between species that is beneficial to both, since it has both historical priority (311) and general currency. Symbiosis is the living together of two organisms in close association, and modifiers are used to specify dependence on the interaction (facultative or obligate) and the range of species that can take part (oligophilic or polyphilic). We make the normal apologies concerning forcing continuous variation and diverse interactions into simple dichotomous classifications, for these and all subsequent definitions
