Atomic and Electronic Structures of Unreconstructed Polar MgO(111) Thin Film on Ag(111)
Atomic and electronic structures of a polar surface of MgO formed on Ag(111)
was investigated by using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED),
Auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and
ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). A rather flat unreconstructed
polar MgO(111) 11 surface could be grown by alternate adsorption of Mg
and O on Ag(111). The stability of the MgO(111) surface was discussed in
terms of interaction between Ag and Mg atoms at the interface, and charge state
of the surface atoms. EELS of this surface did not show a band gap region, and
finite density of states appeared at the Fermi level in UPS. These results
suggest that a polar MgO(111) surface was not an insulating surface but a
semiconducting or metallic surface.Comment: 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Electric field induced charge injection or exhaustion in organic thin film transistor
The conductivity of organic semiconductors is measured {\it in-situ} and
continuously with a bottom contact configuration, as a function of film
thickness at various gate voltages. The depletion layer thickness can be
directly determined as a shift of the threshold thickness at which electric
current began to flow. The {\it in-situ} and continuous measurement can also
determine qualitatively the accumulation layer thickness together with the
distribution function of injected carriers. The accumulation layer thickness is
a few mono layers, and it does not depend on gate voltages, rather depends on
the chemical species.Comment: 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Polar surface engineering in ultra-thin MgO(111)/Ag(111) -- possibility of metal-insulator transition and magnetism
A recent report [Kiguchi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 115402 (2003)]
that the (111) surface of 5 MgO layers grown epitaxially on Ag(111) becomes
metallic to reduce the electric dipole moment raises a question of what will
happen when we have fewer MgO layers. Here we have revealed, first
experimentally with electron energy-loss spectroscopy, that MgO(111) remains
metallic even when one-layer thick, and theoretically with the density
functional theory that the metallization should depend on the nature of the
substrate. We further show, with a spin-density functional calculation, that a
ferromagnetic instability may be expected for thicker films.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Short versus long silver nanowires: a comparison of in vivo pulmonary effects post instillation.
BackgroundSilver nanowires (Ag NWs) are increasingly being used to produce touchscreens for smart phones and computers. When applied in a thin film over a plastic substrate, Ag NWs create a transparent, highly-conductive network of fibers enabling the touch interface between consumers and their electronics. Large-scale application methods utilize techniques whereby Ag NW suspensions are deposited onto substrates via droplets. Aerosolized droplets increase risk of occupational Ag NW exposure. Currently, there are few published studies on Ag NW exposure-related health effects. Concerns have risen about the potential for greater toxicity from exposure to high-aspect ratio nanomaterials compared to their non-fibrous counterparts. This study examines whether Ag NWs of varying lengths affect biological responses and silver distribution within the lungs at different time-points.MethodsTwo different sizes of Ag NWs (2 μm [S-Ag NWs] and 20 μm [L-Ag NWs]) were tested. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were intratracheally instilled with Ag NWs (0, 0.1, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/kg). Broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung tissues were obtained at 1, 7, and 21 days post exposure for analysis of BAL total cells, cell differentials, and total protein as well as tissue pathology and silver distribution. Results and conclusionsThe two highest doses produced significant increases in BAL endpoints. At Day 1, Ag NWs increased total cells, inflammatory polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs), and total protein. PMNs persisted for both Ag NW types at Day 7, though not significantly so, and by Day 21, PMNs appeared in line with sham control values. Striking histopathological features associated with Ag NWs included 1) a strong influx of eosinophils at Days 1 and 7; and 2) formation of Langhans and foreign body giant cells at Days 7 and 21. Epithelial sloughing in the terminal bronchioles (TB) and cellular exudate in alveolar regions were also common. By Day 21, Ag NWs were primarily enclosed in granulomas or surrounded by numerous macrophages in the TB-alveolar duct junction. These findings suggest short and long Ag NWs produce pulmonary toxicity; thus, further research into exposure-related health effects and possible exposure scenarios are necessary to ensure human safety as Ag NW demand increases
Signatures of the excitonic memory effects in four-wave mixing processes in cavity polaritons
We report the signatures of the exciton correlation effects with finite
memory time in frequency domain degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in
semiconductor microcavity. By utilizing the polarization selection rules, we
discriminate instantaneous, mean field interactions between excitons with the
same spins, long-living correlation due to the formation of biexciton state by
excitons with opposite spins, and short-memory correlation effects in the
continuum of unbound two-exciton states. The DFWM spectra give us the relative
contributions of these effects and the upper limit for the time of the
exciton-exciton correlation in the unbound two-exciton continuum. The obtained
results reveal the basis of the cavity polariton scattering model for the DFWM
processes in high-Q GaAs microcavity.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
Time averaged properties along unstable periodic orbits and chaotic orbits in two map systems
Unstable periodic orbit (UPO) recently has become a keyword in analyzing complex phenomena in geophysical fluid dynamics and space physics. In this paper, sets of UPOs in low dimensional maps are theoretically or systematically found, and time averaged properties along UPOs are studied, in relation to those of chaotic orbits
Performance of IPEN-CNEN/SP neutron activation analysis laboratory for microelement determinations in proficiency testing.
The performance of Neutron Activation Laboratory, IPEN ? CNEN/SP, was evaluated for the Ca, Fe, K, Mn, Na and Zn determinations in animal feed samples for ruminants through a proficiency test (PT) program. This PT program is organized by Embrapa Cattle Southeast to evaluate laboratories that analyze animal feed samples. Considering the fractions of satisfactory z-scores (%) of evaluated analytes to determine the laboratories performance, the general performance indicator obtained by IPEN ? CNEN/SP ranged from 90 to 95% of the satisfactory results during the period of participation in the evaluation, four years
