The K\"ahler-Ricci flow on surfaces of positive Kodaira dimension
The existence of K\"ahler-Einstein metrics on a compact K\"ahler manifold has
been the subject of intensive study over the last few decades, following Yau's
solution to Calabi's conjecture. The Ricci flow, introduced by Richard Hamilton
has become one of the most powerful tools in geometric analysis.
We study the K\"ahler-Ricci flow on minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension one
and show that the flow collapses and converges to a unique canonical metric on
its canonical model. Such a canonical is a generalized K\"ahler-Einstein
metric. Combining the results of Cao, Tsuji, Tian and Zhang, we give a metric
classification for K\"aher surfaces with a numerical effective canonical line
bundle by the K\"ahler-Ricci flow. In general, we propose a program of finding
canonical metrics on canonical models of projective varieties of positive
Kodaira dimension
Quantum trajectory approach to stochastically-induced quantum interference effects in coherently-driven two-level atoms
Stochastic perturbation of two-level atoms strongly driven by a coherent
light field is analyzed by the quantum trajectory method. A new method is
developed for calculating the resonance fluorescence spectra from numerical
simulations. It is shown that in the case of dominant incoherent perturbation,
the stochastic noise can unexpectedly create phase correlation between the
neighboring atomic dressed states. This phase correlation is responsible for
quantum interference between the related transitions resulting in anomalous
modifications of the resonance fluorescence spectra.Comment: paper accepted for publicatio
Equidistribution of zeros of holomorphic sections in the non compact setting
We consider N-tensor powers of a positive Hermitian line bundle L over a
non-compact complex manifold X. In the compact case, B. Shiffman and S.
Zelditch proved that the zeros of random sections become asymptotically
uniformly distributed with respect to the natural measure coming from the
curvature of L, as N tends to infinity. Under certain boundedness assumptions
on the curvature of the canonical line bundle of X and on the Chern form of L
we prove a non-compact version of this result. We give various applications,
including the limiting distribution of zeros of cusp forms with respect to the
principal congruence subgroups of SL2(Z) and to the hyperbolic measure, the
higher dimensional case of arithmetic quotients and the case of orthogonal
polynomials with weights at infinity. We also give estimates for the speed of
convergence of the currents of integration on the zero-divisors.Comment: 25 pages; v.2 is a final update to agree with the published pape
Solar wind pressure pulse‐driven magnetospheric vortices and their global consequences
We report the in situ observation of a plasma vortex induced by a solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement in the nightside plasma sheet using multipoint measurements from Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) satellites. The vortex has a scale of 5–10 Re and propagates several Re downtail, expanding while propagating. The features of the vortex are consistent with the prediction of the Sibeck (1990) model, and the vortex can penetrate deep (~8 Re ) in the dawn‐dusk direction and couple to field line oscillations. Global magnetohydrodynamics simulations are carried out, and it is found that the simulation and observations are consistent with each other. Data from THEMIS ground magnetometer stations indicate a poleward propagating vortex in the ionosphere, with a rotational sense consistent with the existence of the vortex observed in the magnetotail. Key Points Solar wind pressure pulse‐driven vortex was observed in the magnetosphere Simulation and ground magnetic field data confirm this tailward moving vortex The vortex can penetrate deep inside the tail plasma sheet and couple to FLRsPeer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107999/1/jgra51112.pd
Localization by disorder in the infrared conductivity of (Y,Pr)Ba2Cu3O7 films
The ab-plane reflectivity of (Y{1-x}Prx)Ba2Cu3O7 thin films was measured in
the 30-30000 cm-1 range for samples with x = 0 (Tc = 90 K), x = 0.4 (Tc = 35 K)
and x = 0.5 (Tc = 19 K) as a function of temperature in the normal state. The
effective charge density obtained from the integrated spectral weight decreases
with increasing x. The variation is consistent with the higher dc resistivity
for x = 0.4, but is one order of magnitude smaller than what would be expected
for x = 0.5. In the latter sample, the conductivity is dominated at all
temperatures by a large localization peak. Its magnitude increases as the
temperature decreases. We relate this peak to the dc resistivity enhancement. A
simple localization-by-disorder model accounts for the optical conductivity of
the x = 0.5 sample.Comment: 7 pages with (4) figures include
Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics on crepant resolutions of K\"ahler cones
We prove that a crepant resolution of a Ricci-flat K\"ahler cone X admits a
complete Ricci-flat K\"ahler metric asymptotic to the cone metric in every
K\"ahler class in H^2_c(Y,R). This result contains as a subcase the existence
of ALE Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics on crepant resolutions of X=C^n /G, where G
is a finite subgroup of SL(n,C).
We consider the case in which X is toric. A result of A. Futaki, H. Ono, and
G. Wang guarantees the existence of a Ricci-flat K\"ahler cone metric if X is
Gorenstein. We use toric geometry to construct crepant resolutions.Comment: 26 pages. Accepted for publication in Mathematische Annale
Moments of the Hadronic Invariant Mass Spectrum in B --> X_c l nu Decays at Belle
We present a measurement of the hadronic invariant mass squared (M^2_X)
spectrum in charmed semileptonic B meson decays B --> X_c l nu based on 140
fb^-1 of Belle data collected near the Y(4S) resonance. We determine the first,
the second central and the second non-central moments of this spectrum for
lepton energy thresholds ranging between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV. Full correlations
between these measurements are evaluated.Comment: published version of the paper (one figure added, minor changes in

Measurement of the gamma gamma -> pi+ pi- and gamma gamma -> K+ K- processes at energies of 2.4 - 4.1 GeV
We have measured pi+pi- and K+K- production in two-photon collisions using
87.7 /fb of data collected with the Belle detector at the asymmetric energy
e+e- collider KEKB. The cross sections are measured to high precision in the
two-photon center-of-mass energy (W) range between 2.4 GeV < W < 4.1 GeV and
angular region |cos theta^{*}| < 0.6. The cross section ratio
sigma(gammagamma->K+K-)/sigma(gammagamma->pi+pi-) is measured to be 0.89 +-
0.04(stat) +- 0.15(syst) in the range of 3.0 GeV < W < 4.1 GeV, where the ratio
is energy independent. We observe a sin^{-4} theta^{*} behavior of the cross
section in the same W range. Production of chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} mesons is
observed in both gammagamma -> pi+pi- and gammagamma -> K+K- modes.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B, errors relative to

Search for tau -> e gamma decay at Belle
We have searched for the lepton-flavor-violating decay tau -> e gamma using a
data sample of 86.7/fb collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric
e^+ e^- collider. No evidence for a signal is obtained, and we set an upper
limit for the branching fraction Br(tau -> e gamma) < 3.9 x 10^-7 at the 90%
