Factors affecting In vitro methane production from cecum contents of White Roman geese
The goal of this research was to gain understanding of in vitro methane (CH4) production from the cecal contents of White Roman geese under various incubation conditions. Five experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of i) incubation time, ii) pH, iii) the addition of formic acid to the culture media, iv) temperature, and v) the addition of salt to the nutritive liquid. Methane production increased significantly with the supplementation of formic acid in the culture fluid (Experiment III). Additionally, CH4 production Experiment V was higher than that without saline. In contrast, low CH4 production occurred under acidic conditions (pH ≦5.4) and at temperatures higher or lower than typical bird body temperature (43 °C) without formic acid and saline solution in the culture media. Since bird body temperature cannot be controlled easily, approaches such as maintaining cecum fluid at low pH and preventing the formation of formic acid by adjusting the recipes of feeds could be considered for controlling in vivo CH4 production from the intestinal tract digesta of geese
Finite Temperature Many-Body Theory with the Lipkin Model
We have compared exact numerical results for the Lipkin model at finite
temperature with Hartree-Fock theory and with the results of including in
addition the ring diagrams. In the simplest version of the Lipkin model the
Hartree-Fock approach shows a ``phase transition" which is absent in the exact
results. For more realistic cases, Hartree-Fock provides a very good
approximation and a modest improvement is obtained by adding the ring diagrams.Comment: 17 pages, NUC-MINN-93/16-T (4 figures obtainable by fax from the

Simple approximation for the starting-energy-independent two-body effective interaction with applications to 6Li
We apply the Lee-Suzuki iteration method to calculate the linked-folded
diagram series for a new Nijmegen local NN potential. We obtain an exact
starting-energy-independent effective two-body interaction for a multi-shell,
no-core, harmonic-oscillator model space. It is found that the resulting
effective-interaction matrix elements can be well approximated by the Brueckner
G-matrix elements evaluated at starting energies selected in a simple way.
These starting energies are closely related to the energies of the initial
two-particle states in the ladder diagrams. The ``exact'' and approximate
effective interactions are used to calculate the energy spectrum of 6Li in
order to test the utility of the approximate form.Comment: 15 text pages and 2 PostScript figures (available upon request).

Large-space shell-model calculations for light nuclei
An effective two-body interaction is constructed from a new Reid-like
potential for a large no-core space consisting of six major shells and is used
to generate the shell-model properties for light nuclei from =2 to 6. (For
practical reasons, the model space is partially truncated for =6.) Binding
energies and other physical observables are calculated and compare favorably
with experiment.Comment: prepared using LaTex, 21 manuscript pages, no figure
Chiral three-nucleon forces and bound excited states in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes
We study the spectra of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes based on chiral two- and
three-nucleon interactions. First, we benchmark our many-body approach by
comparing ground-state energies to coupled-cluster results for the same
two-nucleon interaction, with overall good agreement. We then calculate bound
excited states in 21,22,23O, focusing on the role of three-nucleon forces, in
the standard sd shell and an extended sdf7/2p3/2 valence space. Chiral
three-nucleon forces provide important one- and two-body contributions between
valence neutrons. We find that both these contributions and an extended valence
space are necessary to reproduce key signatures of novel shell evolution, such
as the N = 14 magic number and the low-lying states in 21O and 23O, which are
too compressed with two-nucleon interactions only. For the extended space
calculations, this presents first work based on nuclear forces without
adjustments. Future work is needed and open questions are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, published versio

We report measurements of the exclusive cross section for , where or , in the center-of-mass energy range from the threshold to with initial-state radiation. The
analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector with an
integrated luminosity of 673 .Comment: Presented at EPS07 and LP07 conferences, published in PRD(RC
Moments of the Hadronic Invariant Mass Spectrum in B --> X_c l nu Decays at Belle
We present a measurement of the hadronic invariant mass squared (M^2_X)
spectrum in charmed semileptonic B meson decays B --> X_c l nu based on 140
fb^-1 of Belle data collected near the Y(4S) resonance. We determine the first,
the second central and the second non-central moments of this spectrum for
lepton energy thresholds ranging between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV. Full correlations
between these measurements are evaluated.Comment: published version of the paper (one figure added, minor changes in

Search for \bar{B}^0\to\Lambda_c^+\bar{\Lambda}_c^- decay at Belle
We search for the doubly charmed baryonic decay
, in a data sample of
events accumulated at the resonance with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- collider. We find no significant signal
and set an upper limit of at 90%
confidence level. The result is significantly below a naive extrapolation from
assuming a simple Cabibbo-suppression
factor of . The small branching fraction could be attributed
to a suppression due to the large momentum of the baryonic decay products,
which has been observed in other charmed baryonic two-body B decays. trend
