    The effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction program on the mental health of family caregivers: a randomized controlled trial

    <b>Background</b> Caregivers of people with chronic conditions are more likely than non-caregivers to have depression and emotional problems. Few studies have examined the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in improving their mental well-being. <p></p> <b>Methods</b> Caregivers of persons with chronic conditions who scored 7 or above in the Caregiver Strain Index were randomly assigned to the 8-week MBSR group (n = 70) or the self-help control group (n = 71). Validated instruments were used to assess the changes in depressive and anxiety symptoms, quality of life, self-efficacy, self-compassion and mindfulness. Assessments were conducted at baseline, post-intervention and at the 3-month follow-up. <p></p> <b>Results </b>Compared to the participants in the control group, participants in the MBSR group had a significantly greater decrease in depressive symptoms at post-intervention and at 3 months post-intervention (p < 0.01). The improvement in state anxiety symptoms was significantly greater among participants in the MBSR group than those of the control group at post-intervention (p = 0.007), although this difference was not statistically significant at 3 months post-intervention (p = 0.084). There was also a statistically significant larger increase in self-efficacy (controlling negative thoughts; p = 0.041) and mindfulness (p = 0.001) among participants in the MBSR group at the 3-month follow-up compared to the participants in the control group. No statistically significant group effects (MBSR vs. control) were found in perceived stress, quality of life or self-compassion. <p></p> <b>Conclusions </b>MBSR appears to be a feasible and acceptable intervention to improve mental health among family caregivers with significant care burden, although further studies that include an active control group are needed to make the findings more conclusive

    Phases of QCD, Thermal Quasiparticles and Dilepton Radiation from a Fireball

    We calculate dilepton production rates from a fireball adapted to the kinematical conditions realized in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions over a broad range of beam energies. The freeze-out state of the fireball is fixed by hadronic observables. We use this information combined with the initial geometry of the collision region to follow the space-time evolution of the fireball. Assuming entropy conservation, its bulk thermodynamic properties can then be uniquely obtained once the equation of state (EoS) is specified. The high-temperature (QGP) phase is modelled by a non-perturbative quasiparticle model that incorporates a phenomenological confinement description, adapted to lattice QCD results. For the hadronic phase, we interpolate the EoS into the region where a resonance gas approach seems applicable, keeping track of a possible overpopulation of the pion phase space. In this way, the fireball evolution is specified without reference to dilepton data, thus eliminating it as an adjustable parameter in the rate calculations. Dilepton emission in the QGP phase is then calculated within the quasiparticle model. In the hadronic phase, both temperature and finite baryon density effects on the photon spectral function are incorporated. Existing dilepton data from CERES at 158 and 40 AGeV Pb-Au collisions are well described, and a prediction for the PHENIX setup at RHIC for sqrt(s) = 200 AGeV is given.Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, final versio

    The effects of a mindfulness-based family psychoeducation intervention for the caregivers of young adults with first-episode psychosis: A randomized controlled trial

    Objective: In this study, we investigated the effects of a mindfulness-based family psychoeducation (MBFPE) program on the mental-health outcomes of both caregivers and young adults with first-episode psychosis with an onset in the past three years through a multi-site randomized controlled trial. We also studied the outcomes of three potential mediating effects of interpersonal mindfulness, expressed emotions, and non-attachment on the program. Method: We randomly assigned 65 caregivers of young adults with psychosis to MBFPE (n = 33) or an ordinary family psychoeducation (FPE) program (n = 32); among them, 18 young adults in recovery also participated in the evaluation of outcomes. Results: Intent-to-treat analyses were conducted. No significant time × group interaction effects of MBFPE and FPE programs were found in any of the caregivers’ outcomes. However, the young adults with psychosis reported higher levels of recovery after the MBFPE program than after the ordinary FPE program (F = 8.268, p = 0.012, d = 1.484). They also reported a larger reduction in over-involvement of their caregivers (F = 4.846, p = 0.044, d = 1.136), showing that MBFPE had a superior effect to FPE in promoting recovery and reducing over-involvement. Conclusions: A brief psychoeducation program may not reduce the burden on or improve the mental-health outcome of caregivers of individuals with recent-onset psychosis. However, integrating mindfulness into a conventional family psychoeducation program may reduce the expressed emotions of caregivers, especially over-involvement. Further studies should explore how psychoeducation programs can reduce the impact of psychosis on family through sustainable effects in terms of reducing their burden and expressed emotions, using a rigorous study and adequate sample size

    Large-scale prion protein genotyping in Canadian caribou populations and potential impact on chronic wasting disease susceptibility

    Polymorphisms within the prion protein gene (Prnp) are an intrinsic factor that can modulate chronic wasting disease (CWD) pathogenesis in cervids. Although wild European reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were infected with CWD, as yet there have been no reports of the disease in North American caribou (R. tarandus spp.). Previous Prnp genotyping studies on approximately 200 caribou revealed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at codons 2 (V/M), 129 (G/S), 138 (S/N), 146 (N/n) and 169 (V/M). The impact of these polymorphisms on CWD transmission is mostly unknown, except for codon 138. Reindeer carrying at least one allele encoding for asparagine (138NN or 138SN) are less susceptible to clinical CWD upon infection by natural routes, with the majority of prions limited to extraneural tissues.     Os Recursos Humanos são fundamentais para o prosseguimento da missão e dos objetivos de qualquer organização. A Gestão Estratégica dos Recursos Humanos, permite que uma organização alcance os seus objetivos, através do aumento da probabilidade de realização dos mesmos. Esta lógica de Gestão dos Recursos Humanos, revela-se como uma promessa explícita de eficácia organizacional, que pode ser alcançada pelo desenvolvimento do conjunto de práticas de RH internamente consistentes e adequadas aos contextos organizacionais. O concretizar de uma Gestão Estratégica dos Recursos Humanos nas organizações da Administração Pública, considerando a complexidade humana e o valor inerente, é uma via para o desenvolvimento a todos os níveis. Nas Câmaras Municipais, enquanto órgãos executivos de uma das formas de Autarquias Locais que é o Município, a Gestão Estratégica dos Recursos Humanos torna-se um investimento necessário para a melhoria contínua na prestação de serviços públicos. Isso, tendo em conta que a descentralização de competências da Administração Pública Central, para as Autarquias Locais, acarreta um aumento de responsabilidades e requer maior capacidade de resposta às demandas sociais. É no contexto da Administração Pública, em particular das Autarquias Locais, que se realiza o estudo de caso na Câmara Municipal de Cantanhede. O objetivo desta investigação é compreender a dinâmica do sector dos Recursos Humanos nas Autarquias Locais, sob a perspetiva da Gestão Estratégica dos Recursos Humanos, e perceber a importância que esta tem no desempenho global dessas organizações. O tipo de pesquisa que se materializa é qualitativo e exploratório, com a realização de observação direta, análise documental e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Verifica-se com este estudo, que é preocupação da Câmara Municipal de Cantanhede e do sector dos Recursos Humanos, desenvolver procedimentos estratégicos de Gestão dos Recursos Humanos. Apesar de ser um processo limitado pelos problemas relativos à atualização das carreiras, baixa remuneração, ausência de compensações e prémio de desempenho. Para que a Gestão Estratégica dos Recursos Humanos tenha efetivamente campo de ação, é preciso que a Gestão dos Recursos Humanos seja desmistificada enquanto conceito e experienciada de forma expressiva nas Autarquias Locais, em conjunto com o reforço da autonomia dessas organizações. / Human Resources are fundamental for the pursuit of the mission and goals of any organization. The Strategic Management of Human Resources allows an organization to achieve its objectives by increasing the probability of achieving them. This Human Resource Management logic is an explicit promise of organizational effectiveness that can be achieved by developing a set of HR practices that are internally consistent and appropriate to organizational contexts. The realization of a Strategic Management of Human Resources in Public Administration organizations, considering the human complexity and the inherent value, is a way for development at all levels. In the Municipal Councils, as an executive bodies of one of the forms of Local Authorities that is the Municipality, the Strategic Management of Human Resources becomes a necessary investment for the continuous improvement in the provision of public services. This, taking into account that the decentralization of competences of the Central Public Administration, for Local Authorities, entails an increase in responsibilities and requires greater capacity to respond to social demands. It is in the context of the Public Administration, in particular the Local Authorities, that the case study is carried out in Cantanhede Town Hall. The objective of this research is to understand the dynamics of the Human Resources sector in Local Authorities, from the perspective of the Strategic Management of Human Resources, and realize the importance it has in the overall performance of these organizations. The type of research that materializes is qualitative and exploratory, with direct observation, documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. It is verified with this study, that is concern of the Cantanhede Town Hall and of the Human Resources sector to develop strategic human resources management procedures. Although it is a process limited by the problems related to the updating of the careers, low remuneration, absence of compensations and performance bonus. In order for the Strategic Management of Human Resources to have an effective field of action, it is necessary that the Human Resources Management be demystified as a concept and experienced in an expressive way in Local Authorities, together with the reinforcement of the autonomy of these organizations

    New way of healing : experienced counsellors’ perceptions of the influence of ch’i-related exercises on counselling practice in Taiwan

    This study examines how Taiwanese senior counsellors with substantial experience of ch’i-related exercise (CRE) perceived the influence of their regular CRE on their counselling practice. I am interested in the perceived influence of CRE on both self-care and professional practice. In this studyn this studyn this study n this study n this study n this study, CRE, CRE, CRE, CRE, CRE refers to any refers to any refers to any refers to any ch'i enhancing exercise that coordinates movement with breathing and inner concentration wherein ch'i is a first order concept used by practitioners and regarded by them as an embodiment of ideas related to human life and human existence and able to be experienced and refined through any ch'i related exercise. CRE is a set of practices and an intrinsic part of local culture in Taiwan which in recent years, has become popular practice in Taiwanese society. There are growing numbers of counselling professionals involved in regular CRE in recent years. Studies examining the effects of CRE indicate the benefits of CRE on practitioners' global health and personal growth. However, no previous study has investigated the influence of the long-term regular use of CRE on counsellors‟ self-care and counselling practice. The narrative research design for this study was developed from a post-structural theoretical perspective located in the domain of social constructivism. The data were co-constructed between the researcher and 12 senior Taiwanese counsellors with substantial CRE experience using a semi-structured in-depth interview approach. Interview data were analysed using the structure-based approach developed by William Labov in the field of socio-linguistics. The study reveals an overall benefit of regular involvement in CRE for practitioners' global wellbeing and personal growth counsellor' self-care. The research findings also reveals the potential of ch’i to be used as a way of expressing health and illness and a way of understanding in therapy and CRE to be lived out in therapy as an embodiment. I argue that collectively the narratives, as a whole, give evidence of an increasing integratin of the ideas and practices of ch’i into counselling practice in contemporary Taiwan. This might even make up a new form of integrated and culturally appropriate practice, what I term "a new way of healing." These are therapeutic practices which value the potential of CRE for counsellor's self-care and personal growth; recognize the integral whole of the human person; promote conscious use of the knowledge and experience of ch’i and CRE in therapy as an important aspect of the therapeutic use of self. Implications for practice such as the potential of CRE to be introduced into counsellor training programmes for counsellors' preparation or ongoing education are provided. Recommendations for future research such as the development of a new healing modality based on the research findings are offered
