Quantum Pumping and Quantized Magnetoresistance in a Hall Bar

We show how a dc current can be generated in a Hall bar without applying a bias voltage. The Hall resistance RHR_H that corresponds to this pumped current is quantized, just as in the usual integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE). In contrast with the IQHE, however, the longitudinal resistance RxxR_{xx} does not vanish on the plateaus, but equals the Hall resistance. We propose an experimental geometry to measure the pumped current and verify the predicted behavior of RHR_H and RxxR_{xx}.Comment: RevTeX, 3 figure

(Sub)mm Interferometry Applications in Star Formation Research

This contribution gives an overview about various applications of (sub)mm interferometry in star formation research. The topics covered are molecular outflows, accretion disks, fragmentation and chemical properties of low- and high-mass star-forming regions. A short outlook on the capabilities of ALMA is given as well.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, in proceedings to "2nd European School on Jets from Young Star: High Angular Resolution Observations". Improving learning experiences for community college transfer hospitality and tourism students

    No full text
Previous studies have addressed the topic of community college transfer students, but very few have examined students’ learning experiences after their transfer to a university, and none have focused on the hospitality and tourism discipline. This study aimed to understand community college transfer students’ expectations of hospitality or tourism undergraduate degree programmes and assess any differences between teachers’ and students’ views of these students’ learning experiences. A qualitative study was conducted with teachers and students, using semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews. The study revealed that the students encounter challenges such as campus and faculty environments, gaps in their expectations, heavy study loads, teaching methods, assessment of subjects, and social and affective development. The findings also showed that the feeling of inferiority could drive some students to strive hard to achieve their academic goals. Several strategies to improve students’ learning experiences are recommended

Outbreak of Serogroup C Meningococcal Disease Caused by a Variant of Neisseria meningitidis Serotype 2a ET-15 in a Community of Men Who Have Sex with Men

    No full text
We describe an outbreak, in a community of men who have sex with men, of serogroup C meningococcal disease caused by a genetic variant of the serotype 2a ET-15 Neisseria meningitidis characterized by a point mutation in the gene coding for the serotype 2a antigen. A microbiological characterization of the outbreak strain is presented in this report

Organizational Issues in the Agrifood Sector: Toward a Comparative Approach

Includes bibliographical references. This article outlines a research program comparing the economic organization of agriculture in the United States and European Union (EU). While both have highly developed agricultural sectors, there is substantial variation in organizational arrangements between and within the two. History and path dependence explain some of this variety, but other local conditions are important as well
