    Aeroelastic simulations of stores in weapon bays using Detached-Eddy simulation

    Detached-Eddy Simulations of flows in weapon bays with a generic store at different positions in the cavity and with flexible fins are presented in this paper. Simulations were carried out to better understand the fluid–structure interactions of the unsteady, turbulent flow and the store. Mach and Reynolds numbers (based on the missile diameter) were 0.85 and 326.000 respectively. Spectral analysis showed few differences in the frequency content in the cavity between the store with rigid and flexible fins. However, a large effect of the store position was seen. When the store was placed inside the cavity, the noise reduction reached 7 dB close to the cavity ceiling. The closer the store to the carriage position, the more coherent and quieter was the cavity. To perform a more realistic simulation, a gap of 0.3% of the store diameter was introduced between the fin root and the body of the store. Store loads showed little differences between the rigid and flexible fins when the store was inside and outside the cavity. With the store at the shear layer, the flexible fins were seen to have a reduction in loads with large fluctuations in position about a mean. Fin-tip displacements of the store inside the cavity were of the range of 0.2% of the store diameter, and in the range of 1–2% of store diameter when at the shear layer

Acharya Sushruta advised certain procedures for the management of skin abnormalities under the heading of Vaikrutapaha chikitsa. These include procedures like Pandukarma (hypopigmentation), Krishnakarma (hyperpigmentation), Romasanjanana (repilation), Lomapaharana (depilation), Pratisarana (rubbing), Utsadana (stimulating granulation) and Avasadana (depressing granulation). Inclusion of such procedures light up the fact that cosmetology was given utmost importance even in the Vedic period.  In modern day practice of Ayurveda, Vaikrutapaha chikitsa remains unnoticed in the shadow of surgical measures. These days people need faster results. So they usually opt for procedures that can result in faster relief like facial surgery, laser hair removal, hair transplants, chemical skin peels etc. These are usually costly and may be out of reach of common man. So there arises a need for a result oriented procedure which is natural, cost effective and devoid of side effects. Having said that Vaikrutapaha chikitsa comes into picture in this aspect. There is no doubt that if these procedures are properly adopted in practice, it could bring lot of positive approach among the needy. Every human desires to look beautiful. With the advancement in various ultratechnology, maintenance of beauty has been made easy. But there is equal demand for natural methods and principles in keeping skin, mind and body healthy to remain beautiful. In this circumstances Vaikrutapaha chikitsa stands unique

    Idiopathic gynaecomastia in twins: a case report

    Gynaecomastia is a common pathological condition of breast seen in men. This is defined as benign enlargement of breast tissue in males. It was first described by Palus Aegineta (AD 635-690). Herewith we are presenting cases of 14 year old twins attending the surgical O.P.D with bilateral enlarged breasts and pain. A diagnosis of pubertal gynaecomastia was made with no evidence of malignancy by histopathological examinations and mammography. One boy with 5 x 6 cm of right breast and 2 x3 cm of left breast was treated by subcutaneous mastectomy. Other boy had only enlargement of nipple and areola. He was reassured and sent home without surgical intervention. A rare case of idiopathic gynaecomastia in pubertal twins is described here

    Design of Turbo Trellis Coding Modulation Scheme of Rate 4/9 for Rician Fading Channel

    When the fading channels are encountered during data communication, errors are likely to occur at the receiving end due to multipath propagation. Researchers have been consistently striving to develop Error Correction Schemes that can effectively handle these errors and ensure error-free data reception at the receiver end. Of particular interest are the Forward Error Correction Schemes that can be implemented at the transmitter end itself. However, the implementation of error correction coding through these schemes incurs additional costs in terms of bandwidth expansion, as extra bits need to be added to facilitate error correction. Fortunately, there exists one coding scheme called Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM), which addresses this issue. TCM selects a modulation scheme based on the rate of the convolutional coding scheme. However, this coding technique has limitations in correcting the number of errors, leading to the development of Turbo Coding. This scheme utilizes two coders at the transmitter, arranged in either serial or parallel configuration, and a suitable decoder at the receiver. A design of Turbo Coding scheme has been presented in this paper, that employs convolutional coders having rate 2/3, in a serially concatenated configuration, providing an effective rate of 4/9. This turbo coding scheme is then applied to TCM scheme in order to preserve the bandwidth. Therefore, if using the convolutional coding scheme of rate 2/3, the modulation scheme is 8-QAM and in order to preserve bandwidth after coding, using the Turbo coding scheme of rate 4/9, then the modulation scheme will be 512-QAM. The simulations have been conducted in MATLAB and the error correcting capabilities of the designed scheme in comparison with convolutional coding scheme using the constituent convolutional encoder have also been compared. It has been observed that in the Rician fading channel conditions, the Turbo Trellis Coding Modulation Scheme provides approximately 5 dB gain compared to the convolutional coding scheme

    The 1S0^1S_0 superfluidity of neutron matter is studied in the framework of the generalized Gorkov equation. The vertex corrections to the pairing interaction and the self-energy corrections are introduced and approximated on the same footing in the gap equation. A suppression of the pairing gap by more than 50% with respect to the BCS prediction is found, which deeply changes the scenario for the dynamical and thermal evolution of neutron stars.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figres, RevTeX4 styl

    Seesaw mechanism, baryon asymmetry and neutrinoless double beta decay

    A simplified but very instructive analysis of the seesaw mechanism is here performed. Assuming a nearly diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we study the forms of the Majorana mass matrix of right-handed neutrinos, which reproduce the effective mass matrix of left-handed neutrinos. As a further step, the important effect of a non diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix is explored. The corresponding implications for the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and for the neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed.     Processing of ultrafine-size particulate metal matrix composites by advanced shear technology

A new rheo-processing method, the melt-conditioning high-pressure die-cast (MC-HPDC) process, has been developed for manufacturing near-net-shape components of high integrity. The MC-HPDC process adapts the well-established high shear dispersive mixing action of a twin-screw mechanism to the task of overcoming the cohesive force of the agglomerates under a high shear rate and high intensity of turbulence. This is followed by direct shaping of the slurry into near-net-shape components using an existing cold-chamber die-casting process. The results indicate that the MC-HPDC samples have a uniform distribution of ultrafine-sized SiC particles throughout the entire sample in the as-cast condition. Compared to those produced by conventional high-pressure die casting (HPDC), MC-HPDC samples have a much improved tensile strength and ductility.EP-SR

The conventional methods often produce agglomerated structures exhibiting lower strength and ductility. To overcome the cohesive force of the agglomerates, a melt conditioned high-pressure die casting (MC-HPDC) process innovatively adapts the well-established, high-shear dispersive mixing action of a twin screw mechanism. The distribution of particles and properties of composites are quantitatively evaluated. The adopted rheo process significantly improved the distribution of the reinforcement in the matrix with a strong interfacial bond between the two. A good combination of improved ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and tensile elongation (e) is obtained compared with composites produced by conventional processes.EPSR

    The Cholecystectomy As A Day Case (CAAD) Score: A Validated Score of Preoperative Predictors of Successful Day-Case Cholecystectomy Using the CholeS Data Set

    Background Day-case surgery is associated with significant patient and cost benefits. However, only 43% of cholecystectomy patients are discharged home the same day. One hypothesis is day-case cholecystectomy rates, defined as patients discharged the same day as their operation, may be improved by better assessment of patients using standard preoperative variables. Methods Data were extracted from a prospectively collected data set of cholecystectomy patients from 166 UK and Irish hospitals (CholeS). Cholecystectomies performed as elective procedures were divided into main (75%) and validation (25%) data sets. Preoperative predictors were identified, and a risk score of failed day case was devised using multivariate logistic regression. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to validate the score in the validation data set. Results Of the 7426 elective cholecystectomies performed, 49% of these were discharged home the same day. Same-day discharge following cholecystectomy was less likely with older patients (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.15–0.23), higher ASA scores (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.15–0.23), complicated cholelithiasis (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.48), male gender (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58–0.74), previous acute gallstone-related admissions (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.48–0.60) and preoperative endoscopic intervention (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.34–0.47). The CAAD score was developed using these variables. When applied to the validation subgroup, a CAAD score of ≤5 was associated with 80.8% successful day-case cholecystectomy compared with 19.2% associated with a CAAD score >5 (p < 0.001). Conclusions The CAAD score which utilises data readily available from clinic letters and electronic sources can predict same-day discharges following cholecystectomy

    A century of trends in adult human height

    Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5-22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3-19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8-144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries
