    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UREA DECOMPOSITION AND CELL CLASSES OF RESERVOIR PHYTOPLANKTON IN THE NORTH HAN RIVER SYSTEM

    The influence of natural phytoplankton cell classes upon the response of urea decomposition was investigated in four reservoirs in the North Han River System. The decomposition rate of urea was 0.3 to 29.4 μ mol urea・m⁻³・hr.⁻¹ in the light and 0.2 to 14.9 μ mol urea・m⁻³・hr.⁻¹ in the dark. Much higher decomposition rates were observed at the eutrophic stations in Lake Euiam. The urea decomposition in the smaller fraction (25 μm). No differences in the ratios of urea decomposition to chlorophyll-a or photosynthesis among three fractions were observed. This might be mainly due to the difference in the standing crop of phytoplankton. These trends were no different between sampling areas and reservoirs. The greater part of urea decomposition was the phase of CO₂ liberation rate into the water. Eight to 50% of the urea decomposition was incorporated into the particulate phase in the light, but this was much lower in the dark. The results of the present study indicate that urea in reservoirs decomposes by phytoplankton rather than bacteria and the phytoplankton would be competitive to bacteria.Article信州大学理学部付属諏訪臨湖実験所報告 7: 31-40(1991)departmental bulletin pape

    Arabidopsis ABCG34 contributes to defense against necrotrophic pathogens by mediating the secretion of camalexin

    Plant pathogens cause huge yield losses. Plant defense often depends on toxic secondary metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth. Because most secondary metabolites are also toxic to the plant, specific transporters are needed to deliver them to the pathogens. To identify the transporters that function in plant defense, we screened Arabidopsis thaliana mutants of full-size ABCG transporters for hypersensitivity to sclareol, an antifungal compound. We found that atabcg34 mutants were hypersensitive to sclareol and to the necrotrophic fungi Alternaria brassicicola and Botrytis cinerea. AtABCG34 expression was induced by A. brassicicola inoculation as well as by methyl-jasmonate, a defense-related phytohormone, and AtABCG34 was polarly localized at the external face of the plasma membrane of epidermal cells of leaves and roots. atabcg34 mutants secreted less camalexin, a major phytoalexin in A. thaliana, whereas plants overexpressing AtABCG34 secreted more camalexin to the leaf surface and were more resistant to the pathogen. When treated with exogenous camalexin, atabcg34 mutants exhibited hypersensitivity, whereas BY2 cells expressing AtABCG34 exhibited improved resistance. Analyses of natural Arabidopsis accessions revealed that AtABCG34 contributes to the disease resistance in naturally occurring genetic variants, albeit to a small extent.     Pan-conserved segment tags identify ultra-conserved sequences across assemblies in the human pangenome

    The human pangenome, a new reference sequence, addresses many limitations of the current GRCh38 reference. The first release is based on 94 high-quality haploid assemblies from individuals with diverse backgrounds. We employed a k-mer indexing strategy for comparative analysis across multiple assemblies, including the pangenome reference, GRCh38, and CHM13, a telomere-to-telomere reference assembly. Our k-mer indexing approach enabled us to identify a valuable collection of universally conserved sequences across all assemblies, referred to as “pan-conserved segment tags” (PSTs). By examining intervals between these segments, we discerned highly conserved genomic segments and those with structurally related polymorphisms. We found 60,764 polymorphic intervals with unique geo-ethnic features in the pangenome reference. In this study, we utilized ultra-conserved sequences (PSTs) to forge a link between human pangenome assemblies and reference genomes. This methodology enables the examination of any sequence of interest within the pangenome, using the reference genome as a comparative framework

    Newtonian Collapse of Scalar Field Dark Matter

    In this letter, we develop a Newtonian approach to the collapse of galaxy fluctuations of scalar field dark matter under initial conditions inferred from simple assumptions. The full relativistic system, the so called Einstein-Klein-Gordon, is reduced to the Schr\"odinger-Newton one in the weak field limit. The scaling symmetries of the SN equations are exploited to track the non-linear collapse of single scalar matter fluctuations.     Evolution of the Schr\"odinger--Newton system for a self--gravitating scalar field

    Using numerical techniques, we study the collapse of a scalar field configuration in the Newtonian limit of the spherically symmetric Einstein--Klein--Gordon (EKG) system, which results in the so called Schr\"odinger--Newton (SN) set of equations. We present the numerical code developed to evolve the SN system and topics related, like equilibrium configurations and boundary conditions. Also, we analyze the evolution of different initial configurations and the physical quantities associated to them. In particular, we readdress the issue of the gravitational cooling mechanism for Newtonian systems and find that all systems settle down onto a 0--node equilibrium configuration.Comment: RevTex file, 19 pages, 26 eps figures.     Two-Proton Correlations near Midrapidity in p+Pb and S+Pb Collisions at the CERN SPS

    Correlations of two protons emitted near midrapidity in p+Pb collisions at 450 GeV/c and S+Pb collisions at 200A GeV/c are presented, as measured by the NA44 Experiment. The correlation effect, which arises as a result of final state interactions and Fermi-Dirac statistics, is related to the space-time characteristics of proton emission. The measured source sizes are smaller than the size of the target lead nucleus but larger than the sizes of the projectiles. A dependence on the collision centrality is observed; the source size increases with decreasing impact parameter. Proton source sizes near midrapidity appear to be smaller than those of pions in the same interactions. Quantitative agreement with the results of RQMD (v1.08) simulations is found for p+Pb collisions. For S+Pb collisions the measured correlation effect is somewhat weaker than that predicted by the model simulations, implying either a larger source size or larger contribution of protons from long-lived particle decays.Comment: 10 pages (LaTeX) text, 4 (EPS) figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     The recent search for non qqˉq \bar{q} mesons in πp\pi^{-}p interactions at Brookhaven National Laboratory is summarized.     To determine the epidemiology of outbreaks of avian influenza A virus (subtypes H5N1, H9N2) in chickens in Bangladesh, we conducted surveys and examined virus isolates.     Exotic Meson Production in the f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-} System observed in the Reaction πpηπ+ππp\pi^{-} p \to \eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c

    This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the πππ+η\pi^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\eta final state in πp\pi^{-}p collisions at 18GeV/c. Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} in the decay channel f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-}. The mass M=1709±24±41M = 1709 \pm 24 \pm 41 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=403±80±115\Gamma = 403 \pm 80 \pm 115 MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent with the parameters of the previously observed π1(1600)\pi_{1}(1600). The second resonance with mass M=2001±30±92M = 2001 \pm 30 \pm 92 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=333±52±49\Gamma = 333 \pm 52 \pm 49 MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical models. In addition, the presence of π2(1900)\pi_{2}(1900) is confirmed with mass M=2003±88±148M = 2003 \pm 88 \pm 148 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=306±132±121\Gamma = 306 \pm 132 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and a new state, a1(2096)a_{1}(2096), is observed with mass M=2096±17±121M = 2096 \pm 17 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=451±41±81\Gamma = 451 \pm 41 \pm 81 MeV/c^2. The decay properties of these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
