The impact of parametric noise amplification on long haul transmission throughput
Advanced signal processing, such as multi-channel digital back propagation and mid span optical phase conjugation, can compensate for inter channel nonlinear effects in point to point links. However, once such are effects are compensated, the interaction between the signal and noise fields becomes dominant. We will show that this interaction has a direct impact on the signal to noise ratio improvement, observing that ideal optical phase conjugation offers 1.5 dB more performance benefit than DSP based compensation
Phase-conjugated subcarrier coding for fibre nonlinearity mitigation in CO-OFDM transmission
We demonstrate a novel subcarrier coding scheme combined with pre-EDC for fibre nonlinearity mitigation in CO-OFDM, showing that a performance improvement of 1.5 dB can be achieved in a 150 Gb/s BPSK PDM CO-OFDM transmission
Phase-conjugated pilots for fibre nonlinearity compensation in CO-OFDM transmission
We experimentally demonstrate a novel fibre nonlinearity compensation technique for CO-OFDM based on phase-conjugated pilots (PCPs), showing that, by varying the PCP overhead a performance improvement up to 4 dB can be achieved allowing highly flexible adaptation to link characteristics
High spectral efficiency transmission emulation for non-linear transmission performance estimation for high order modulation formats
We demonstrate a simple method to experimentally evaluate nonlinear transmission performance of high order modulation formats using a low number of channels and channel-like ASE. We verify it's behaviour is consistent with the AWGN model of transmission
Transmission performance improvement using random DFB laser based Raman amplification and bidirectional second-order pumping
We demonstrate that a distributed Raman amplification scheme based on random distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser enables bidirectional second-order Raman pumping without increasing relative intensity noise (RIN) of the signal. This extends the reach of 10 Ă 116 Gb/s DP-QPSK WDM transmission up to 7915 km, compared with conventional Raman amplification schemes. Moreover, this scheme gives the longest maximum transmission distance among all the Raman amplification schemes presented in this paper, whilst maintaining relatively uniform and symmetric signal power distribution, and is also adjustable in order to be highly compatible with different nonlinearity compensation techniques, including mid-link optical phase conjugation (OPC) and nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT)
Optimal packetisation of MPEG-4 using RTP over mobile networks
The introduction of third-generation wireless networks should result in real-time mobile
video communications becoming a reality. Delivery of such video is likely to be facilitated by the realtime
transport protocol (RTP). Careful packetisation of the video data is necessary to ensure the
optimal trade-off between channel utilisation and error robustness. Theoretical analyses for two basic
schemes of MPEG-4 data encapsulation within RTP packets are presented. Simulations over a GPRS
(general packet radio service) network are used to validate the analysis of the most efficient scheme.
Finally, a motion adaptive system for deriving MPEG-4 video packet sizes is presented. Further
simulations demonstrate the benefits of the adaptive system
Universal interface width distributions at the depinning threshold
We compute the probability distribution of the interface width at the
depinning threshold, using recent powerful algorithms. It confirms the
universality classes found previously. In all cases, the distribution is
surprisingly well approximated by a generalized Gaussian theory of independant
modes which decay with a characteristic propagator G(q)=1/q^(d+2 zeta); zeta,
the roughness exponent, is computed independently. A functional renormalization
analysis explains this result and allows to compute the small deviations, i.e.
a universal kurtosis ratio, in agreement with numerics. We stress the
importance of the Gaussian theory to interpret numerical data and experiments.Comment: 4 pages revtex4. See also the following article cond-mat/030146
First experimental demonstration of nonlinear inverse synthesis transmission over transoceanic distances
We demonstrate for the first time, the transmission performance of 10Gbaud nonlinear inverse synthesis based signal over transoceanic distances, showing a significant improvement in data capacity x distance product (x12) compared with other NFT-based systems
Higher correlations, universal distributions and finite size scaling in the field theory of depinning
Recently we constructed a renormalizable field theory up to two loops for the
quasi-static depinning of elastic manifolds in a disordered environment. Here
we explore further properties of the theory. We show how higher correlation
functions of the displacement field can be computed. Drastic simplifications
occur, unveiling much simpler diagrammatic rules than anticipated. This is
applied to the universal scaled width-distribution. The expansion in
d=4-epsilon predicts that the scaled distribution coincides to the lowest
orders with the one for a Gaussian theory with propagator G(q)=1/q^(d+2 \zeta),
zeta being the roughness exponent. The deviations from this Gaussian result are
small and involve higher correlation functions, which are computed here for
different boundary conditions. Other universal quantities are defined and
evaluated: We perform a general analysis of the stability of the fixed point.
We find that the correction-to-scaling exponent is omega=-epsilon and not
-epsilon/3 as used in the analysis of some simulations. A more detailed study
of the upper critical dimension is given, where the roughness of interfaces
grows as a power of a logarithm instead of a pure power.Comment: 15 pages revtex4. See also preceding article cond-mat/030146
