    Post-Demagnetization Performance Assessment for Interior Permanent Magnet AC Machines

    This paper assesses the post-demagnetization performance of interior permanent magnet (IPM) ac machines by employing the more accurate recoil line approach based on a 2-D transient finite-element analysis (FEA). The method predicts continuous demagnetization of each magnet element undergoing partial demagnetization and evaluates the machine behavior after an event of short-circuit faults across its terminals. Along with the short-circuit faults, a failure in a drive controller or a position sensor, which may lead to a reverse voltage across the machine terminals that can eventually be more fatal and can cause significant reduction in the performance due to high levels of demagnetization, is analyzed as the worst case scenario. The FE predicted post-demagnetization performance is validated by experimental measurements in which a six-phase IPM machine designed for electric vehicle traction is allowed to lose its synchronization with the inverter when forced to operate on a torque-speed envelope, which is way beyond the drive voltage setting

    Synthesis and antimicrobial studies on novel sulfonamides containing 4-azidomethyl coumarin

    A series of new and novel coumarin-6-sulfonamides with a free C4-azidomethyl group have been synthesized as antimicrobials in three steps starting from 7-methyl-4-bromomethylcoumarin 1. The reaction of 1 with chlorosulfonic acid was found to yield the corresponding 6-sulfonylchloride 2, which when treated with sodium azide led to intermediate 3. The title sulfonamides 5a-y were obtained from the reaction of 3 with various aromatic amines 4 in refluxing benzene. The chemical structures of the compounds were elucidated by IR, NMR and LC-MS spectral data. All the synthesized compounds have been screened for their in vitro anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities. Some of the compounds have been found to be active against both bacterial species at a concentration of 1 μg/mL. © 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved

    Orientations of the lamellar phase of block copolymer melts under oscillatory shear flow

    We develop a theory to describe the reorientation phenomena in the lamellar phase of block copolymer melt under reciprocating shear flow. We show that similar to the steady-shear, the oscillating flow anisotropically suppresses fluctuations and gives rise to the parallel-perpendicular orientation transition.     Attitudes and perceptions of next-of-kin/loved ones toward end-of-life HIV cure-related research: A qualitative focus group study in Southern California

    As end-of-life (EOL) HIV cure-related research expands, understanding perspectives of participants’ next-of-kin (NOK) is critical to maintaining ethical study conduct. We conducted two small focus groups and two one-on-one interviews using focus group guides with the NOK of Last Gift study participants at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Participating NOK included six individuals (n = 5 male and n = 1 female), including a grandmother, grandfather, partner, spouse, and two close friends. Researchers double-coded the transcripts manually for overarching themes and sub-themes using an inductive approach. We identified six key themes: 1) NOK had an accurate, positive understanding of the Last Gift clinical study; 2) NOK felt the study was conducted ethically; 3) Perceived benefits for NOK included support navigating the dying/grieving process and personal growth; 4) Perceived drawbacks included increased sadness, emotional stress, conflicted wishes between NOK and study participants, and concerns around potential invasiveness of study procedures at the EOL; 5) NOK expressed pride in loved ones’ altruism; and 6) NOK provided suggestions to improve the Last Gift study, including better communication between staff and themselves. These findings provide a framework for ethical implementation of future EOL HIV cure-related research involving NOK

    Haloperidol and Ziprasidone for Treatment of Delirium in Critical Illness

    BACKGROUND: There are conflicting data on the effects of antipsychotic medications on delirium in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we assigned patients with acute respiratory failure or shock and hypoactive or hyperactive delirium to receive intravenous boluses of haloperidol (maximum dose, 20 mg daily), ziprasidone (maximum dose, 40 mg daily), or placebo. The volume and dose of a trial drug or placebo was halved or doubled at 12-hour intervals on the basis of the presence or absence of delirium, as detected with the use of the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU, and of side effects of the intervention. The primary end point was the number of days alive without delirium or coma during the 14-day intervention period. Secondary end points included 30-day and 90-day survival, time to freedom from mechanical ventilation, and time to ICU and hospital discharge. Safety end points included extrapyramidal symptoms and excessive sedation. RESULTS: Written informed consent was obtained from 1183 patients or their authorized representatives. Delirium developed in 566 patients (48%), of whom 89% had hypoactive delirium and 11% had hyperactive delirium. Of the 566 patients, 184 were randomly assigned to receive placebo, 192 to receive haloperidol, and 190 to receive ziprasidone. The median duration of exposure to a trial drug or placebo was 4 days (interquartile range, 3 to 7). The median number of days alive without delirium or coma was 8.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.6 to 9.9) in the placebo group, 7.9 (95% CI, 4.4 to 9.6) in the haloperidol group, and 8.7 (95% CI, 5.9 to 10.0) in the ziprasidone group (P=0.26 for overall effect across trial groups). The use of haloperidol or ziprasidone, as compared with placebo, had no significant effect on the primary end point (odds ratios, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.64 to 1.21] and 1.04 [95% CI, 0.73 to 1.48], respectively). There were no significant between-group differences with respect to the secondary end points or the frequency of extrapyramidal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The use of haloperidol or ziprasidone, as compared with placebo, in patients with acute respiratory failure or shock and hypoactive or hyperactive delirium in the ICU did not significantly alter the duration of delirium.     Continuous demagnetization assessment for triple redundant 9-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet machine

    In this study, the risk of partial irreversible demagnetisation of a triple redundant, nine-phase fault tolerant machine based on permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machine topology has been comprehensively assessed under various faults, including the worst case scenario when the applied voltage vector is in the opposite direction of the back electromotive force due to sensing and inverter control failure, by employing a continuous demagnetisation model. The dynamic response during fault transients and the post-demagnetisation performance, such as the demagnetisation distribution, reduction in the back EMF and torque, will also be analysed and compared
