Hard thermal loops and the entropy of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories
We apply the previously proposed scheme of approximately self-consistent
hard-thermal-loop resummations in the entropy of high-temperature QCD to N=4
supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories and compare with a (uniquely
determined) R[4,4] Pad\'e approximant that interpolates accurately between the
known perturbative result and the next-to-leading order strong-coupling result
obtained from AdS/CFT correspondence. We find good agreement up to couplings
where the entropy has dropped to about 85% of the Stefan-Boltzmann value. This
is precisely the regime which in purely gluonic QCD corresponds to temperatures
above 2.5 times the deconfinement temperature and for which this method of
hard-thermal-loop resummation has given similar good agreement with lattice QCD
results. This suggests that in this regime the entropy of both QCD and N=4 SYM
is dominated by effectively weakly coupled hard-thermal-loop quasiparticle
degrees of freedom. In N=4 SYM, strong-coupling contributions to the
thermodynamic potential take over when the entropy drops below 85% of the
Stefan-Boltzmann value.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, JHEP3. v2: revised and expanded, with unchanged
HTL results but corrected NLO strong-coupling result from AdS/CFT (which is
incorrectly reproduced in almost all previous papers comparing weak and
strong coupling results of N=4 SYM) and novel (unique) Pade approximant
interpolating between weak and strong coupling result
Explaining Variability in Caries Experience Using an Ecological Model
A model including diet, oral hygiene, and dental treatment and three ecological levels was tested to study variability in caries experience. Analysis produced a rank order of explanation for the ecological variables: (1) community, (2) family, (3) individual. The treatment factor contributed more to oral condition than oral hygiene or diet within each ecological level.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67939/2/10.1177_00220345740530030701.pd
Reconciling MOND and dark matter?
Observations of galaxies suggest a one-to-one analytic relation between the
inferred gravity of dark matter at any radius and the enclosed baryonic mass, a
relation summarized by Milgrom's law of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND).
However, present-day covariant versions of MOND usually require some additional
fields contributing to the geometry, as well as an additional hot dark matter
component to explain cluster dynamics and cosmology. Here, we envisage a
slightly more mundane explanation, suggesting that dark matter does exist but
is the source of MOND-like phenomenology in galaxies. We assume a canonical
action for dark matter, but also add an interaction term between baryonic
matter, gravity, and dark matter, such that standard matter effectively obeys
the MOND field equation in galaxies. We show that even the simplest realization
of the framework leads to a model which reproduces some phenomenological
predictions of cold dark matter (CDM) and MOND at those scales where these are
most successful. We also devise a more general form of the interaction term,
introducing the medium density as a new order parameter. This allows for new
physical effects which should be amenable to observational tests in the near
future. Hence, this very general framework, which can be furthermore related to
a generalized scalar-tensor theory, opens the way to a possible unification of
the successes of CDM and MOND at different scales.Comment: 9 page
Azimuthal Angle Correlations for Rapidity Separated Hadron Pairs in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged
hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and
charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in deuteron-gold (d+Au) and proton-proton (p+p)
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Jet structures are observed in the
correlations which we quantify in terms of the conditional yield and angular
width of away side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons
in the gold nucleus carrying nucleon momentum fraction x~0.1 to x~0.01. Within
this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.Comment: 330 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, no tables. Submitted to Phys.

System Size and Energy Dependence of Jet-Induced Hadron Pair Correlation Shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum
(1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from {dijets} in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =
62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is
broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from \Delta\phi=\pi in central and
semi-central collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location
are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not
on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound
or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.Comment: 464 authors from 60 institutions, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.

Improved Measurement of Double Helicity Asymmetry in Inclusive Midrapidity pi^0 Production for Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
We present an improved measurement of the double helicity asymmetry for pi^0
production in polarized proton-proton scattering at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV employing
the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The
improvements to our previous measurement come from two main factors: Inclusion
of a new data set from the 2004 RHIC run with higher beam polarizations than
the earlier run and a recalibration of the beam polarization measurements,
which resulted in reduced uncertainties and increased beam polarizations. The
results are compared to a Next to Leading Order (NLO) perturbative Quantum
Chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation with a range of polarized gluon
distributions.Comment: 389 authors, 4 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D,

Evaluation of atrial septal defects with 4D flow MRI—multilevel and inter-reader reproducibility for quantification of shunt severity
Purpose: With the hypothesis that 4D flow can be used in evaluation of cardiac shunts, we seek to evaluate the multilevel and interreader reproducibility of measurements of the blood flow, shunt fraction and shunt volume in patients with atrial septum defect (ASD) in practice at multiple clinical sites. Materials and methods: Four-dimensional flow MRI examinations were performed at four institutions across Europe and the US. Twenty-nine patients (mean age, 43 years; 11 male) were included in the study. Flow measurements were performed at
