    The traveling salesman problem on cubic and subcubic graphs

    We study the traveling salesman problem (TSP) on the metric completion of cubic and subcubic graphs, which is known to be NP-hard. The problem is of interest because of its relation to the famous 4/3-conjecture for metric TSP, which says that the integrality gap, i.e., the worst case ratio between the optimal value of a TSP instance and that of its linear programming relaxation (the subtour elimination relaxation), is 4/3. We present the first algorithm for cubic graphs with approximation ratio 4/3. The proof uses polyhedral techniques in a surprising way, which is of independent interest. In fact we prove constructively that for any cubic graph on TeX vertices a tour of length TeX exists, which also implies the 4/3-conjecture, as an upper bound, for this class of graph-TSP. Recently, Mömke and Svensson presented an algorithm that gives a 1.461-approximation for graph-TSP on general graphs and as a side result a 4/3-approximation algorithm for this problem on subcubic graphs, also settling the 4/3-conjecture for this class of graph-TSP. The algorithm by Mömke and Svensson is initially randomized but the authors remark that derandomization is trivial. We will present a different way to derandomize their algorithm which leads to a faster running time. All of the latter also works for multigraphs

    Preventing empirical antibiotic treatment failure in migrant populations: screening by infection risk, not ethnic background

    Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are a major international health threat. In many low and middle-income countries poorly regulated antibiotic use, limited surveillance, and inadequate sanitation give rise to high rates of antibiotic resistance. A resulting reliance on last-line antibiotic options further contributes to the emergence of MDROs. The potential for these pathogens to spread across international borders is a matter of considerable concern. However, this problem is commonly framed as primarily a threat to the health security of countries where resistance is not yet endemic. In fact, it is little acknowledged that those at greatest risk from antibiotic treatment failure are individuals who move from regions of high MDRO prevalence to settings where standard empirical treatment options remain largely effective. In this perspective, we highlight the poor treatment outcomes for disseminated bacterial infections in individuals who have moved from settings in which MDROs are common to those where MDROs are currently less common. We discuss MDRO screening strategies that could avoid stigmatizing vulnerable populations by focusing on future risk of disseminated infection, rather than past risk of acquisition. In practical terms, this means screening individuals before childbirth, immunosuppressive treatments, major surgery, or other events associated with disseminated infection risk, rather than prioritizing screening for individuals from regions with high carriage rates. We argue that such measures would reduce antibiotic treatment failure and improve outcomes while protecting migrant populations from the divisive consequences of targeted screening programs.Steven L.     Noise reduction in 3D noncollinear parametric amplifier

    We analytically find an approximate Bloch-Messiah reduction of a noncollinear parametric amplifier pumped with a focused monochromatic beam. We consider type I phase matching. The results are obtained using a perturbative expansion and scaled to a high gain regime. They allow a straightforward maximization of the signal gain and minimization of the parametric fluorescence noise. We find the fundamental mode of the amplifier, which is an elliptic Gaussian defining the optimal seed beam shape. We conclude that the output of the amplifier should be stripped of higher order modes, which are approximately Hermite-Gaussian beams. Alternatively, the pump waist can be adjusted such that the amount of noise produced in the higher order modes is minimized.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted to Applied Physics

    Implications of the Top Quark Mass Measurement for the CKM Parameters, xsx_s and CP Asymmetries

    Motivated by the recent determination of the top quark mass by the CDF collaboration, \mt =174 \pm 10 ^{+13}_{-12} GeV, we review and update the constraints on the parameters of the quark flavour mixing matrix VCKMV_{CKM} in the standard model. In performing our fits, we use inputs from the measurements of the following quantities: (i) \abseps, the CP-violating parameter in KK decays, (ii) \delmd, the mass difference due to the \bdbdbar\ mixing, (iii) the matrix elements \absvcb and \absvub, and (iv) BB-hadron lifetimes. We find that the allowed region of the unitarity triangle is very large, mostly due to theoretical uncertainties. (This emphasizes the importance of measurements of CP-violating rate asymmetries in the BB system.) Nevertheless, the present data do somewhat restrict the allowed values of the coupling constant product fBdB^Bdf_{B_d}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{B_d}} and the renormalization-scale invariant bag constant B^K\hat{B}_K. With the updated CKM matrix we present the currently-allowed range of the ratio Vtd/Vts\vert V_{td}/V_{ts} \vert, as well as the standard model predictions for the \bsbsbar\ mixing parameter \xs and the quantities sin2α\sin 2\alpha, sin2β\sin 2\beta and sin2γ\sin^2\gamma, which characterize the CP-asymmetries in BB-decays. The ALEPH collaboration has recently reported a significant improvement on the lower limit on the \bs-\bsb mass difference, ΔMs/ΔMd>11.3\Delta M_s/\Delta M_d > 11.3 (95\% C.L.). This has interesting consequences for the CKM parameters which are also worked out.     Dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes: hydrodynamics and radiation

    Using the 3+1 formalism of general relativity we obtain the equations governing the dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes with arbitrary sources. We then specialize for the case of perfect fluids accompanied by a flow of interacting massless or massive particles (e.g. neutrinos) which are described in terms of relativistic transport theory. We focus in three types of coordinates: 1) isotropic gauge and maximal slicing, 2) radial gauge and polar slicing, and 3) isotropic gauge and polar slicing.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.     Patterns in reporting and participant inclusion related to race and ethnicity in autism intervention literature: Data from a large-scale systematic review of evidence-based practices

    There are marked racial and ethnic disparities in diagnosis and services for individuals on the autism spectrum, yet race and ethnicity are underreported and underexamined in autism research. The current study examines the reporting of race and ethnicity and the inclusion of participants across racial and ethnic groups in studies included in a large-scale systematic review of autism intervention research (1990–2017). Trained research assistants reviewed 1013 articles and extracted data on the reporting of race and ethnicity data and the inclusion of participants from different racial and ethnic categories from each article. Only 25% of the articles reported any data on race and ethnicity and reporting over time has slowly increased across the 28 years of the review. Descriptive statistics suggest that race and ethnicity reporting varied by study design, intervention, and outcomes. In studies with reported data, White participants had the highest rate of participation (64.8%), with a large gap between the next highest rates of participation, which were among Hispanic/Latino (9.4%), Black (7.7%), and Asian (6.4%) participants. The lack of reporting and the limited inclusion of participants across minoritized racial and ethnic groups are concerning and suggest a need to examine practices in autism research from planning to dissemination. Lay Abstract: Researchers who study autism-related interventions do a poor job reporting data related to the race and ethnicity of autistic individuals who participate in their studies, and of those who do report these data, the participants are overwhelmingly White. This is problematic for many reasons, as we know little about how interventions are meeting the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and we assume that interventions are effective for all when they have been developed and validated primarily with and for White children. This study examined the reporting patterns of autism intervention researchers whose work was included in a large-scale systematic review of the intervention literature published between 1990 and 2017. We found that only 25% of studies (out of 1,013 included in the review) included data related to the race and ethnicity of their participants, with minimal change in reporting patterns across the years. In studies with reported data, White participants had the highest rate of participation, with a large gap between the next highest rates of participation among Hispanic/Latino, Black, and Asian participants. Other race and ethnicity groups had very low representation. This study includes additional analyses which examine how the reporting patterns and the inclusion of racially and ethnically diverse participants varies across study types, interventions, and outcome areas. Reporting this data is merely a starting point to begin to address the many disparities in autism-related healthcare, education, and research practices, and this article includes broader implications and next steps to ensure the field becomes more equitable and inclusive
