Magnetic Response in a Zigzag Carbon Nanotube
Magnetic response of interacting electrons in a zigzag carbon nanotube
threaded by a magnetic flux is investigated within a Hartree-Fock mean field
approach. Following the description of energy spectra for both non-interacting
and interacting cases we analyze the behavior of persistent current in
individual branches of a nanotube. Our present investigation leads to a
possibility of getting a filling-dependent metal-insulator transition in a
zigzag carbon nanotube.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figure
Task granularity analysis in logic programs
While logic programming languages offer a great deal of
scope for parallelism, there is usually some overhead associated with the execution of goals in parallel because
of the work involved in task creation and scheduling. In practice, therefore, the "granularity" of a goal, i.e. an estimate of the work available under it, should be taken into account when deciding whether or not to execute a goal concurrently as a sepárate task. This paper describes a method for estimating the granularity of a goal at compile time. The runtime overhead associated with our approach is usually quite small, and the performance improvements resulting from the incorporation of grainsize control can be quite good. This is shown by means of experimental results
Relations Among Maternal and Paternal Behavior and Children\u27s Stress Biology
Parenting behavior has been shown to have a wide range of effects, influencing children’s psychological and biological stress outcomes. Most research focuses on maternal parenting behaviors, with few studies observing the effects of paternal behaviors or the influence of both parents on their children. In this study, the relationship between maternal and paternal parenting behaviors was examined in its association to predict children’s cortisol levels. Cultural differences in parenting styles was also observed. American (N=86) and Chinese (N=97) families participated in the study, with parents reporting their behaviors. Children’s cortisol was collected during a stressor task and correlational analysis was conducted. Overall, cortisol levels were higher in Chinese children than in American children. Results indicated that across both cultures, only supportive paternal parenting was a significant predictor in children’s cortisol levels. Additionally, there is a significant relationship within styles of parenting, indicating that mothers and fathers tend to have similar parenting styles
Crystal structure of Cu-Sn-In alloys around the {\eta} phase field studied by neutron diffraction
The study of the Cu-Sn-In ternary system has become of great importance in
recent years, due to new environmental regulations forcing to eliminate the use
of Pb in bonding technologies for electronic devices. A key relevant issue
concerns the intermetallic phases which grow in the bonding zone and are
determining in their quality and performance. In this work, we focus in the
{\eta}-phase (Cu2In or Cu6Sn5) that exists in both end binaries and as a
ternary phase. We present a neutron diffraction study of the constitution and
crystallography of a series of alloys around the 60 at.% Cu composition, and
with In contents ranging from 0 to 25 at.%, quenched from 300\degreeC. The
alloys were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, probe microanalysis
and high-resolution neutron diffraction. The Rietveld refinement of neutron
diffraction data allowed to improve the currently available model for site
occupancies in the hexagonal {\eta}-phase in the binary Cu-Sn as well as in
ternary alloys. For the first time, structural data is reported in the ternary
Cu-Sn-In {\eta}-phase as a function of composition, information that is of
fundamental technological importance as well as valuable input data for ongoing
modelisations of the ternary phase diagram.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Estimating the computational cost of logic programs
Information about the computational cost of programs is potentially useful for a variety of purposes, including selecting among different algorithms, guiding program transformations, in granularity control and mapping decisions in parallelizing compilers, and query optimization in deductive databases. Cost analysis of logic programs is complicated by nondeterminism: on the one hand, procedures can return múltiple Solutions, making it necessary to estímate the number of solutions in order to give nontrivial upper bound cost estimates; on the other hand, the possibility of failure has to be taken into account while estimating lower bounds. Here we discuss techniques to address these problems to some extent

Symbolic processing is used to implement inference of system state and internal communication for inference and control. The flavor system provides an object-oriented programming environment in which the inference engine and knowledge base for the symbolic controller are realized. System communication is accomplished by asynchronous message passing using a mailbox facility. The particular target application considered is a software-intensive radio, which is envisioned as being digitally implemented. Symbolic processing is used to internally control the radio down to the module level. Testing is via computer emulation (Monte Carlo)
Polarimetric Properties of Flux-Ropes and Sheared Arcades in Coronal Prominence Cavities
The coronal magnetic field is the primary driver of solar dynamic events.
Linear and circular polarization signals of certain infrared coronal emission
lines contain information about the magnetic field, and to access this
information, either a forward or an inversion method must be used. We study
three coronal magnetic configurations that are applicable to polar-crown
filament cavities by doing forward calculations to produce synthetic
polarization data. We analyze these forward data to determine the
distinguishing characteristics of each model. We conclude that it is possible
to distinguish between cylindrical flux ropes, spheromak flux ropes, and
sheared arcades using coronal polarization measurements. If one of these models
is found to be consistent with observational measurements, it will mean
positive identification of the magnetic morphology that surrounds certain
quiescent filaments, which will lead to a greater understanding of how they

Orbital Kondo behavior from dynamical structural defects
The interaction between an atom moving in a model double-well potential and
the conduction electrons is treated using renormalization group methods in
next-to-leading logarithmic order. A large number of excited states is taken
into account and the Kondo temperature is computed as a function of
barrier parameters. We find that for special parameters can be close to
and it can be of the same order of magnitude as the renormalized
splitting . However, in the perturbative regime we always find that
T_K \alt \Delta with a T_K \alt 1 {\rm K} [Aleiner {\em et al.}, Phys.
Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 2629 (2001)]. We also find that remains

Search for Small Trans-Neptunian Objects by the TAOS Project
The Taiwan-America Occultation Survey (TAOS) aims to determine the number of
small icy bodies in the outer reach of the Solar System by means of stellar
occultation. An array of 4 robotic small (D=0.5 m), wide-field (f/1.9)
telescopes have been installed at Lulin Observatory in Taiwan to simultaneously
monitor some thousand of stars for such rare occultation events. Because a
typical occultation event by a TNO a few km across will last for only a
fraction of a second, fast photometry is necessary. A special CCD readout
scheme has been devised to allow for stellar photometry taken a few times per
second. Effective analysis pipelines have been developed to process stellar
light curves and to correlate any possible flux changes among all telescopes. A
few billion photometric measurements have been collected since the routine
survey began in early 2005. Our preliminary result of a very low detection rate
suggests a deficit of small TNOs down to a few km size, consistent with the
