Phase diagram of quarter-filled band organic salts, [EDT-TTF-CONMe2]2X, X = AsF6 and Br
An investigation of the P/T phase diagram of the quarter-filled organic
conductors, [EDT-TTF-CONMe2]2X, is reported on the basis of transport and NMR
studies of two members, X=AsF6 and Br of the family. The strongly insulating
character of these materials in the low pressure regime has been attributed to
a remarkably stable charge ordered state confirmed by 13C NMR and the only
existence of 1/4 Umklapp e-e scattering favoring a charge ordering instead of
the 1D Mott localization seen in (TM)2X which are quarter-filled compounds with
dimerization. A non magnetic insulating phase instead of the spin density wave
state is stabilized in the deconfined regime of the phase diagram. This
sequence of phases observed under pressure may be considered as a generic
behavior for 1/4-filled conductors with correlations
Competition and coexistence of bond and charge orders in (TMTTF)2AsF6
(TMTTF)2AsF6 undergoes two phase transitions upon cooling from 300 K. At
Tco=103 K a charge-ordering (CO) occurs, and at Tsp(B=9 T)=11 K the material
undergoes a spin-Peierls (SP) transition. Within the intermediate, CO phase,
the charge disproportionation ratio is found to be at least 3:1 from carbon-13
NMR 1/T1 measurements on spin-labeled samples. Above Tsp, up to about 3Tsp,
1/T1 is independent of temperature, indicative of low-dimensional magnetic
correlations. With the application of about 0.15 GPa pressure, Tsp increases
substantially, while Tco is rapidly suppressed, demonstrating that the two
orders are competing. The experiments are compared to results obtained from
calculations on the 1D extended Peierls-Hubbard model.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
A Three-Dimensional Analysis of Symmetric Composite Laminates with Damage
Damage behavior of a symmetric composite laminate without an initial im perfection or macro-crack is analyzed based on a three-dimensional lamination theory under multi-axial loading. The global response of the laminate during the damaging pro cess is determined from the individual response of its constituent plies and their mutual relations. Some specific results are presented to illustrate the damage characteristics of several typical composite laminates when they are subjected to proportional loading. The application of the method to characterize damage initiation and growth in more complex structures is also discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67341/2/10.1177_105678959300200304.pd
Infrared generation in low-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures via quantum coherence
A new scheme for infrared generation without population inversion between
subbands in quantum-well and quantum-dot lasers is presented and documented by
detailed calculations. The scheme is based on the simultaneous generation at
three frequencies: optical lasing at the two interband transitions which take
place simultaneously, in the same active region, and serve as the coherent
drive for the IR field. This mechanism for frequency down-conversion does not
rely upon any ad hoc assumptions of long-lived coherences in the semiconductor
active medium. And it should work efficiently at room temperature with
injection current pumping. For optimized waveguide and cavity parameters, the
intrinsic efficiency of the down-conversion process can reach the limiting
quantum value corresponding to one infrared photon per one optical photon. Due
to the parametric nature of IR generation, the proposed inversionless scheme is
especially promising for long-wavelength (far- infrared) operation.Comment: 4 pages, 1 Postscript figure, Revtex style. Replacement corrects a

High-Resolution Hard X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Spectrometers Based on Superconducting Absorbers Coupled to Superconducting Transition Edge Sensors
We are developing detectors based on bulk superconducting absorbers coupled to superconducting transition edge sensors (TES) for high-resolution spectroscopy of hard X-rays and soft gamma-rays. We have achieved an energy resolution of 70 eV FWHM at 60 keV using a 1 x 1 x 0.25 mm{sup 3} Sn absorber coupled to a Mo/Cu multilayer TES with a transition temperature of 100 mK. The response of the detector is compared with a simple model using only material properties data and characteristics derived from IV-measurements. We have also manufactured detectors using superconducting absorbers with a higher stopping power, such as Pb and Ta. We present our first measurements of these detectors, including the thermalization characteristics of the bulk superconducting absorbers. The differences in performance between the detectors are discussed and an outline of the future direction of our detector development efforts is given
Magnetic field-dependent interplay between incoherent and Fermi liquid transport mechanisms in low-dimensional tau phase organic conductors
We present an electrical transport study of the 2-dimensional (2D) organic
conductor tau-(P-(S,S)-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr)_2(AuBr_2)_y (y = 0.75) at low
temperatures and high magnetic fields. The inter-plane resistivity rho_zz
increases with decreasing temperature, with the exception of a slight anomaly
at 12 K. Under a magnetic field B, both rho_zz and the in-plane resistivity
plane rho_xx show a pronounced negative and hysteretic magnetoresistance with
Shubnikov de Haas (SdH)oscillations being observed in some (high
quality)samples above 15 T. Contrary to the predicted single, star-shaped,
closed orbit Fermi surface from band structure calculations (with an expected
approximate area of 12.5% of A_FBZ), two fundamental frequencies F_l and F_h
are detected in the SdH signal. These orbits correspond to 2.4% and 6.8% of the
area of the first Brillouin zone(A_FBZ), with effective masses F_l = 4.0 +/-
0.5 and F_h = 7.3 +/- 0.1. The angular dependence, in tilted magnetic fields of
F_l and F_h, reveals the 2D character of the FS and Angular dependent
magnetoresistance (AMRO) further suggests a FS which is strictly 2-D where the
inter-plane hopping t_c is virtually absent or incoherent. The Hall constant
R_xy is field independent, and the Hall mobility increases by a factor of 3
under moderate magnetic fields. Our observations suggest a unique physical
situation where a stable 2D Fermi liquid state in the molecular layers are
incoherently coupled along the least conducting direction. The magnetic field
not only reduces the inelastic scattering between the 2D metallic layers, but
it also reveals the incoherent nature of interplane transport in the AMRO
spectrum. The apparent ferromagnetism of the hysteretic magnetoresistance
remains an unsolved problem.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figure
Nonleptonic Weak Decays of Bottom Baryons
Cabibbo-allowed two-body hadronic weak decays of bottom baryons are analyzed.
Contrary to the charmed baryon sector, many channels of bottom baryon decays
proceed only through the external or internal W-emission diagrams. Moreover,
W-exchange is likely to be suppressed in the bottom baryon sector.
Consequently, the factorization approach suffices to describe most of the
Cabibbo-allowed bottom baryon decays. We use the nonrelativistic quark model to
evaluate heavy-to-heavy and heavy-to-light baryon form factors at zero recoil.
When applied to the heavy quark limit, the quark model results do satisfy all
the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry. The decay rates and up-down
asymmetries for bottom baryons decaying into and
are calculated. It is found that the up-down asymmetry is negative except for
decay and for decay modes with in the final
state. The prediction for
is consistent with the recent CDF measurement. We also present
estimates for decays and compare with various model
calculations.Comment: 24 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. Uncertainties with form factor q^2

The structure of a major surface antigen SAG19 from Eimeria tenella unifies the Eimeria SAG family
In infections by apicomplexan parasites including Plasmodium, Toxoplasma gondii, and Eimeria, host interactions are mediated by proteins including families of membrane-anchored cysteine-rich surface antigens (SAGs) and SAG-related sequences (SRS). Eimeria tenella causes caecal coccidiosis in chickens and has a SAG family with over 80 members making up 1% of the proteome. We have solved the structure of a representative E. tenella SAG, EtSAG19, revealing that, despite a low level of sequence similarity, the entire Eimeria SAG family is unified by its three-layer αβα fold which is related to that of the CAP superfamily. Furthermore, sequence comparisons show that the Eimeria SAG fold is conserved in surface antigens of the human coccidial parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis but this fold is unrelated to that of the SAGs/SRS proteins expressed in other apicomplexans including Plasmodium species and the cyst-forming coccidia Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Besnoitia besnoiti. However, despite having very different structures, Consurf analysis showed that Eimeria SAG and Toxoplasma SRS families each exhibit marked hotspots of sequence hypervariability that map to their surfaces distal to the membrane anchor. This suggests that the primary and convergent purpose of the different structures is to provide a platform onto which sequence variability can be imposed
Charge ordering and antiferromagnetic exchange in layered molecular crystals of the theta type
We consider the electronic properties of layered molecular crystals of the
type theta-DA, where A is an anion and D is a donor molecule such as
BEDT-TTF [where BEDT-TTF is bis-(ethylenedithia-tetrathiafulvalene)] which is
arranged in the theta type pattern within the layers. We argue that the
simplest strongly correlated electron model that can describe the rich phase
diagram of these materials is the extended Hubbard model on the square lattice
at a quarter filling. In the limit where the Coulomb repulsion on a single site
is large, the nearest-neighbour Coulomb repulsion, V, plays a crucial role.
When V is much larger than the intermolecular hopping integral t the ground
state is an insulator with charge ordering. In this phase antiferromagnetism
arises due to a novel fourth-order superexchange process around a plaquette on
the square lattice. We argue that the charge ordered phase is destroyed below a
critical non-zero value V, of the order of t. Slave boson theory is used to
explicitly demonstrate this for the SU(N) generalisation of the model, in the
large N limit. We also discuss the relevance of the model to the all-organic
family beta''-(BEDT-TTF)SFYSO where Y = CHCF, CH, CHF.Comment: 15 pages, 6 eps figure
