Semiclassical Strings, Dipole Deformations of N=1 SYM and Decoupling of KK Modes
In this paper we investigate the recently found -deformed
Maldacena-Nunez background by studying the behavior of different semiclassical
string configurations. This background is conjectured to be dual to dipole
deformations of SYM. We compare our results to those in the pure
Maldacena-Nunez background and show that the energies of our string
configurations are higher than in the undeformed background. Thinking in the
lines of (hep-th/0505100) we argue that this is an evidence for better
decoupling of the Kaluza-Klein modes from the pure SYM theory excitations.
Moreover we are able to find a limit of the background in which the string
energy is independent of , these strings are interpreted as
corresponding to pure gauge theory effects.Comment: 31 pages, references added, new solutions in Section 7 presented, an

The scaling function at strong coupling from the quantum string Bethe equations
We study at strong coupling the scaling function describing the large spin
anomalous dimension of twist two operators in super Yang-Mills
theory. In the spirit of AdS/CFT duality, it is possible to extract it from the
string Bethe Ansatz equations in the sector of the \ads
superstring. To this aim, we present a detailed analysis of the Bethe equations
by numerical and analytical methods. We recover several short string
semiclassical results as a check. In the more difficult case of the long string
limit providing the scaling function, we analyze the strong coupling version of
the Eden-Staudacher equation, including the Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase.
We prove that it admits a unique solution, at least in perturbation theory,
leading to the correct prediction consistent with semiclassical string
calculations.Comment: 25 pages, 5 eps figure
Integrable twists in AdS/CFT
A class of marginal deformations of four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills
theory has been found to correspond to a set of smooth, multiparameter
deformations of the S^5 target subspace in the holographic dual on AdS_5 x S^5.
We present here an analogous set of deformations that act on global toroidal
isometries in the AdS_5 subspace. Remarkably, certain sectors of the string
theory remain classically integrable in this larger class of so-called
gamma-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 backgrounds. Relying on studies of deformed
su(2)_gamma models, we formulate a local sl(2)_gamma Lax representation that
admits a classical, thermodynamic Bethe equation (based on the Riemann-Hilbert
interpretation of Bethe's ansatz) encoding the spectrum in the deformed AdS_5
geometry. This result is extended to a set of discretized, asymptotic Bethe
equations for the twisted string theory. Near-pp-wave energy spectra within
sl(2)_gamma and su(2)_gamma sectors provide a useful and stringent test of such
equations, demonstrating the reliability of this technology in a wider class of
string backgrounds. In addition, we study a twisted Hubbard model that yields
certain predictions of the dual beta-deformed gauge theory.Comment: v2: references and clarifications added, 46 page
Strange Stars with a Density-Dependent Bag Parameter
We have studied strange quark stars in the framework of the MIT bag model,
allowing the bag parameter B to depend on the density of the medium. We have
also studied the effect of Cooper pairing among quarks, on the stellar
structure. Comparison of these two effects shows that the former is generally
more significant. We studied the resulting equation of state of the quark
matter, stellar mass-radius relation, mass-central-density relation,
radius-central-density relation, and the variation of the density as a function
of the distance from the centre of the star. We found that the
density-dependent B allows stars with larger masses and radii, due to
stiffening of the equation of state. Interestingly, certain stellar
configurations are found to be possible only if B depends on the density. We
have also studied the effect of variation of the superconducting gap parameter
on our results.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figs; v2: 25 pages, 9 figs, version to be published in

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter II.2: Quantum Strings in AdS5xS5
We review the semiclassical analysis of strings in AdS5xS5 with a focus on
the relationship to the underlying integrable structures. We discuss the
perturbative calculation of energies for strings with large charges, using the
folded string spinning in an AdS3 subset of AdS5 as our main example.
Furthermore, we review the perturbative light-cone quantization of the string
theory and the calculation of the worldsheet S-matrix.Comment: 20 pages, see also overview article arXiv:1012.3982, v2: references

Green-Schwarz Strings in TsT-transformed backgrounds
We consider classical strings propagating in a background generated by a
sequence of TsT transformations. We describe a general procedure to derive the
Green-Schwarz action for strings. We show that the U(1) isometry variables of
the TsT-transformed background are related to the isometry variables of the
initial background in a universal way independent of the details of the
background. This allows us to prove that strings in the TsT-transformed
background are described by the Green-Schwarz action for strings in the initial
background subject to twisted boundary conditions. Our construction implies
that a TsT transformation preserves integrability properties of the string
sigma model. We discuss in detail type IIB strings propagating in the
\g_i-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 space-time, find the twisted boundary conditions for
bosons and fermions, and use them to write down an explicit expression for the
monodromy matrix. We also discuss string zero modes whose dynamics is governed
by a fermionicgeneralization of the integrable Neumann model.Comment: 33 pages, latex, v2: typos correcte
The check of QCD based on the tau-decay data analysis in the complex q^2-plane
The thorough analysis of the ALEPH data on hadronic tau-decay is performed in
the framework of QCD. The perturbative calculations are performed in 3 and
4-loop approximations. The terms of the operator product expansion (OPE) are
accounted up to dimension D=8. The value of the QCD coupling constant
alpha_s(m_tau^2)=0.355 pm 0.025 was found from hadronic branching ratio R_tau.
The V+A and V spectral function are analyzed using analytical properties of
polarization operators in the whole complex q^2-plane. Borel sum rules in the
complex q^2 plane along the rays, starting from the origin, are used. It was
demonstrated that QCD with OPE terms is in agreement with the data for the
coupling constant close to the lower error edge alpha_s(m_tau^2)=0.330. The
restriction on the value of the gluonic condensate was found
=0.006 pm 0.012 GeV^2. The analytical perturbative QCD was
compared with the data. It is demonstrated to be in strong contradiction with
experiment. The restrictions on the renormalon contribution were found. The
instanton contributions to the polarization operator are analyzed in various
sum rules. In Borel transformation they appear to be small, but not in spectral
moments sum rules.Comment: 24 pages; 1 latex + 13 figure files. V2: misprints are corrected,

IL11 activates pancreatic stellate cells and causes pancreatic inflammation, fibrosis and atrophy in a mouse model of pancreatitis
Interleukin-11 (IL11) is important for fibrosis and inflammation, but its role in the pancreas is unclear. In pancreatitis, fibrosis, inflammation and organ dysfunction are associated with pancreatic stellate cell (PSC)-to-myofibroblast transformation. Here, we show that IL11 stimulation of PSCs, which specifically express IL11RA in the pancreas, results in transient STAT3 phosphorylation, sustained ERK activation and PSC activation. In contrast, IL6 stimulation of PSCs caused sustained STAT3 phosphorylation but did not result in ERK activation or PSC transformation. Pancreatitis factors, including TGFβ, CTGF and PDGF, induced IL11 secretion from PSCs and a neutralising IL11RA antibody prevented PSC activation by these stimuli. This revealed an important ERK-dependent role for autocrine IL11 activity in PSCs. In mice, IL11 was increased in the pancreas after pancreatic duct ligation, and in humans, IL11 and IL11RA levels were elevated in chronic pancreatitis. Following pancreatic duct ligation, administration of anti-IL11RA to mice reduced pathologic (ERK, STAT, NF-κB) signalling, pancreatic atrophy, fibrosis and pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNFα, IL6 and IL1β) levels. This is the first description of IL11-mediated activation of PSCs, and the data suggest IL11 as a stromal therapeutic target in pancreatitis
Targeting endogenous kidney regeneration using anti-IL11 therapy in acute and chronic models of kidney disease
The kidney has large regenerative capacity, but this is compromised when kidney damage is excessive and renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs) undergo SNAI1-driven growth arrest. Here we investigate the role of IL11 in TECs, kidney injury and renal repair. IL11 stimulation of TECs induces ERK- and p90RSK-mediated GSK3β inactivation, SNAI1 upregulation and pro-inflammatory gene expression. Mice with acute kidney injury upregulate IL11 in TECs leading to SNAI1 expression and kidney dysfunction, which is not seen in Il11 deleted mice or in mice administered a neutralizing IL11 antibody in either preemptive or treatment modes. In acute kidney injury, anti-TGFβ reduces renal fibrosis but exacerbates inflammation and tubule damage whereas anti-IL11 reduces all pathologies. Mice with TEC-specific deletion of Il11ra1 have reduced pathogenic signaling and are protected from renal injury-induced inflammation, fibrosis, and failure. In a model of chronic kidney disease, anti-IL11 therapy promotes TEC proliferation and parenchymal regeneration, reverses fibroinflammation and restores renal mass and function. These data highlight IL11-induced mesenchymal transition of injured TECs as an important renal pathology and suggest IL11 as a therapeutic target for restoring stalled endogenous regeneration in the diseased kidney
Charge-Dependent Correlations in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions and the Chiral Magnetic Effect
We provide a phenomenological analysis of present experimental searches for
local parity violation manifested through the Chiral Magnetic Effect. We
introduce and discuss the relevant correlation functions used for the
measurements. Our analysis of the available data from both RHIC and LHC shows
that the present experimental evidence for the Chiral Magnetic Effect is rather
ambiguous. We further discuss in some detail various background contributions
due to conventional physics, which need to be understood quantitatively in
order to draw a definitive conclusion about the existence of local parity
violation in heavy ion collisions.Comment: 37 pages, to appear in Lect. Notes Phys. "Strongly interacting matter
