Risk factors and demographics for microtia in South America: a case-control analysis

BACKGROUND: The etiopathogenesis of microtia is still unknown in the majority of the cases, particularly for individuals presenting with isolated microtia. Our aim was to evaluate potential risk factors for this condition using a case–control approach. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1,194 live births with isolated microtia enrolled in the ECLAMC study (Estudio Colaborativo Latino Americano de Malformaciones Congénitas) from 1982 to 2011 and their respective controls. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated with logistic regression models along with 95% confidence intervals for the resulting OR estimates controlling for the effects of potential confounders (sex, maternal age, hospital, and year of birth) for an adjusted OR (aOR). RESULTS: Multiparity was associated with a higher risk of microtia compared with primiparity (aOR, 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2–1.8), with women who had eight or more prior pregnancies having the highest risk (aOR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.6–5.2). Women who presented with cold-like symptoms were at higher risk for microtia (aOR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.2–3.9) as well as those that used tobacco or alcohol during pregnancy (aOR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1–2.6 and aOR, 1.4; 95% CI, 0.9–2.1, respectively). The association with alcohol use appeared to be limited to those women who reported binge drinking during pregnancy (aOR, 1.4; 95% CI, 0.7–3.1). Cases from hospitals at low altitude (<2500 m) tended to have more severe types of microtia than those from hospitals at high altitude. CONCLUSION: These results support the hypothesis that, in addition to teratogens, other nongenetic risk factors contribute to the occurrence of isolated microtia.Fil: Luquetti, Daniela. This study falls in the field of the processes of formation that researched the possibilities of teaching cases being propellers of reflexive processes on knowledge in teaching. Teaching cases are narratives of episodes usually drawn from real daily school life, that bring to light teachers' experiences, establishing reflexive processes and relations between theory and practice. In order to realize this research, with a qualitative approach, it was established the objective of investigating and evaluating the potentiality of the teaching cases as narratives of school episodes, when used with primary school teachers, dealing with the teaching and learning of their students' reading and writing, helping them the re-construe their knowledge foundations in their teaching role. To attain this goal, some cases that pictured events related to the daily work of the primary teachers who play their educational role in the beginning years of basic education. The process of training-research was realized in a virtual learning environment, with a view to an ongoing training of the teachers of the first basic education years. The answers provided by the teachers who participated in the research suggest that the adoption of teaching cases in the professional development of teachers made it possible for the reflexions to become very actual, since, while analysing their colleagues' and their own narratives of professional knowledge, they were reflecting their own ideals, in a reflexive moment that fostered learning in/of teaching.CIEC - Centro de Investigação em Estudos da Criança, IE, UMinho (UI 317 da FCT

Changing the mind: hypnosis and diabetes

[Excerpt] Diabetes, although a physiological disorder suffers the impact of negative psychological stresses through the dysfunctional activation of the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems. In fact, a variety of psychological variables have been found to be important in the metabolic control and management of diabetic patients, particularly regarding adherence to self-care behaviors and medication. Lifestyle therapy is the cornerstone of diabetes treatment and, therefore, any intervention that is able to achieve the control of glycaemia, prevent micro and macro complications of diabetes, improve patient’s quality of life and decrease diabetes risk factors is certainly welcome. Partial safety factors for prestressed concrete girders 2 strengthened with CFRP laminates

This paper provides a framework for the calibration of partial safety factors in prestressed concrete (PC) girders strengthened in flexure with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. A hybrid approach was proposed to take advantage of comprehensive nonlinear numerical models in reliability analysis using a first-order reliability method (FORM) in conjunction with the response surface method (RSM). The PC girders selected for analyses were taken from real structures designed and built in the 1980s based on old standards that now require strengthening and upgrade due to partial corrosion of the prestressing strands. Using the proposed approach, a sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the most relevant variables and assess the area of CFRP laminates needed to restore capacity up to new design standards. A partial safety factor was proposed for strengthening PC girders using CFRP laminates. Sensitivity analysis showed that traffic loads and model uncertainties are the most important variables for calibration. β-Carbolines. 2. Rate Constants of Proton Transfer from Multiexponential Decays in the Lowest Singlet Excited State of Harmine in Water As a Function of pH

The β-carbolines present a complex problem involving multiple equilibria in the excited state in hydrogen-bonding solvents including water. Three excited state species exist: neutral, cation, and zwitterion. Here we examine the multiple equilibria and excited state kinetics of harmine, using time-resolved and steady state fluorescence techniques. From an analysis of the multiexponential decays, measured at the emission wavelengths of the three species as a function of the pH, seven unknowns (four rate constants and three reciprocal lifetimes) were determined. Data analysis was made both by a previously reported numerical method and by analytical solution of the differential equation set. The results obtained accurately describe the independently obtained steady-state fluorescence results. The dramatic modifications of the equilibria and rate constants between the ground and excited states can be understood on the basis of the significative changes in charge densities on the two nitrogen atoms of harmine upon excitation. Mechanisms are proposed for the formation of excited state cation and zwitterion beginning with the excited state neutral molecule
