Superlattice with hot electron injection: an approach to a Bloch oscillator

A semiconductor superlattice with hot electron injection into the miniband is considered. The injection changes the stationary distribution function and results in a qualitative change of the frequency behaviour of the differential conductivity. In the regime with Bloch oscillating electrons and injection into the upper part of the miniband the region of negative differential conductivity is shifted from low frequencies to higher frequencies. We find that the dc differential conductivity can be made positive and thus the domain instability can be suppressed. At the same time the high-frequency differential conductivity is negative above the Bloch frequency. This opens a new way to make a Bloch oscillator operating at THz frequencies.Comment: RevTeX, 8 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. B, 15 Januar 200

Nonlinear dynamics of large amplitude dust acoustic shocks and solitary pulses in dusty plasmas

    Get PDF
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves. Time-dependent numerical solutions of our nonlinear model compare favorably well with the recent experimental works (mentioned above) that have reported the formation of large amplitude non-stationary DA shocks and DA solitary pulses in low-temperature dusty plasma discharges.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Superconductivity near the vibrational mode instability in MgCNi3

To understand the role of electron-phonon interaction in superconducting MgCNi3_{3} we have performed density functional based linear response calculations of its lattice dynamical properties. A large coupling constant λ% \lambda = 1.51 is predicted and contributing phonons are identified as displacements of Ni atoms towards octahedral interstitials of the perovskite lattice. Instabilities found for some vibrational modes emphasize the role of anharmonic effects in resolving experimental controversies.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, replaces the older versio

Gain without inversion in a biased superlattice

Intersubband transitions in a superlattice under homogeneous electric field is studied within the tight-binding approximation. Since the levels are equi-populated, the non-zero response appears beyond the Born approximation. Calculations are performed in the resonant approximation with scattering processes exactly taken into account. The absorption coefficient is equal zero for the resonant excitation while a negative absorption (gain without inversion) takes place below the resonance. A detectable gain in the THz spectral region is obtained for the low-doped GaAsGaAs-based superlattice and spectral dependencies are analyzed taking into account the interplay between homogeneous and inhomogeneous mechanisms of broadening.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Linear optical absorption spectra of mesoscopic structures in intense THz fields: free particle properties

    Get PDF
We theoretically study the effect of THz radiation on the linear optical absorption spectra of semiconductor structures. A general theoretical framework, based on non-equilibrium Green functions, is formulated, and applied to the calculation of linear optical absorption spectrum for several non-equilibrium mesoscopic structures. We show that a blue-shift occurs and sidebands appear in bulk-like structures, i.e., the dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect [A.-P. Jauho and K. Johnsen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4576 (1996)]. An analytic calculation leads to the prediction that in the case of superlattices distinct stable steps appear in the absorption spectrum when conditions for dynamical localization are met.Comment: 13 Pages, RevTex using epsf to include 8 ps figures. Current-voltage characteristic and stability in resonant-tunneling n-doped semiconductor superlattices

We review the occurrence of electric-field domains in doped superlattices within a discrete drift model. A complete analysis of the construction and stability of stationary field profiles having two domains is carried out. As a consequence, we can provide a simple analytical estimation for the doping density above which stable stable domains occur. This bound may be useful for the design of superlattices exhibiting self-sustained current oscillations. Furthermore we explain why stable domains occur in superlattices in contrast to the usual Gunn diode.Comment: Tex file and 3 postscript figure

The MEG detector for μ+e+γ{\mu}+\to e+{\gamma} decay search

    Get PDF
The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\ by using one of the most intense continuous μ+\mu^+ beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.Comment: 59 pages, 90 figure

New constraint on the existence of the mu+-> e+ gamma decay

The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, a version accepted in Phys. Rev. Let

Measurement of the radiative decay of polarized muons in the MEG experiment

    Get PDF
We studied the radiative muon decay μ+e+ννˉγ\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma by using for the first time an almost fully polarized muon source. We identified a large sample (~13000) of these decays in a total sample of 1.8x10^14 positive muon decays collected in the MEG experiment in the years 2009--2010 and measured the branching ratio B(μ+e+ννˉγ\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma) = (6.03+-0.14(stat.)+-0.53(sys.))x10^-8 for E_e > 45 MeV and E_{\gamma} > 40 MeV, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. The precise measurement of this decay mode provides a basic tool for the timing calibration, a normalization channel, and a strong quality check of the complete MEG experiment in the search for μ+e+γ\mu^+ \to e^+\gamma process.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.
