    Augmenting Deep Learning Performance in an Evidential Multiple Classifier System

    International audienceThe main objective of this work is to study the applicability of ensemble methods in the context of deep learning with limited amounts of labeled data. We exploit an ensemble of neural networks derived using Monte Carlo dropout, along with an ensemble of SVM classifiers which owes its effectiveness to the hand-crafted features used as inputs and to an active learning procedure. In order to leverage each classifier's respective strengths, we combine them in an evidential framework, which models specifically their imprecision and uncertainty. The application we consider in order to illustrate the interest of our Multiple Classifier System is pedestrian detection in high-density crowds, which is ideally suited for its difficulty, cost of labeling and intrinsic imprecision of annotation data. We show that the fusion resulting from the effective modeling of uncertainty allows for performance improvement, and at the same time, for a deeper interpretation of the result in terms of commitment of the decision

    Quality of Imported Argentine Beef

    A total of 8 lots of vacuum-packed bovine rump hearts (Gluteus medius muscle) imported in Italy from Argentina were submitted to microbiological (total bacterial count, Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas spp., Lactobacilli, sulfite-reducing Clostridia, Listeria monocytogenes) and physicochemical analyses (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, color measurement and shear force) after different storage times (35, 75 and 100 days). Lactobacilli were the predominant microbial population (about 6 log cfu/cm2), causing a microbial stabilization and acidification of meat. Seventy-three Lactobacilli isolates were submitted to random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction and identified, showing a high prevalence of Lactobacillus sakei (in all the samples) and Lactobacillus curvatus (in samples stored for 75 or 100 days). We observed high total volatile basic nitrogen levels (>27 mgN/100 g) in all the samples and a discoloration of beef after the opening of the packs. Our results suggest the need for a higher standardization of production conditions. Practical Applications Vacuum-packed raw beef from Argentina is globally commercialized, and it is frequently shipped to European markets. Considering the perishability of this product and the very long shelf life assigned, the availability of microbiological and physicochemical data could be useful for quality evaluations purposes. Our data indicate that a long shelf life (3–4 months) is potentially achievable, but the application of the best hygienic practices during meat production and an optimal stabilization of microflora by the selection (or addition) of lactic acid bacteria must be assured. As protein degradation and microbial population showed to be stable during the shelf life, quality characteristics that are perceived by the consumer (such as color indexes) become important parameters for a proper evaluation of meat quality

    Thermal Characterization of the HeII LHC Heat Exchanger Tube

    The LHC magnet cooling scheme is based on a HeII bayonet heat exchanger, which acts as a quasi isothermal heat sink. In order to assess the thermal performance of the oxygen free, annealed/cold worked copper tube, measurements of the total thermal conductance of the tube were performed in a laboratory set-up. This paper describes the experimental technique, which permits to separate the contributio n of the Kapitza interface resistance from the total transverse conductance. The influence of the surface treatment on the Kapitza resistance is also discussed

    Status of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN

    The HIE-ISOLDE project represents a major upgrade of the ISOLDE nuclear facility with a mandate to significantly improve the quality and increase the intensity and energy of radioactive nuclear beams produced at CERN. The project will expand the experimental nuclear physics programme at ISOLDE by focusing on an upgrade of the existing Radioactive ion beam EXperiment (REX) linac with a 40 MV superconducting linac comprising thirty-two niobium-on-copper sputter-coated quarter-wave resonators housed in six cryomodules. The new linac will raise the energy of post-accelerated beams from 3 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u. The upgrade will be staged to first deliver beam energies of 5.5 MeV/u using two high-ÎČ\beta cryomodules placed downstream of REX, before the energy variable section of the existing linac is replaced with two low-ÎČ\beta cryomodules and two additional high-ÎČ\beta cryomodules are installed to attain over 10 MeV/u with full energy variability above 0.45 MeV/u.     Heat Flow Measurements on LHC Components

    The refrigeration and liquefaction capacity necessary to operate at 1.9 K the 27 km long string of superconducting magnets of the LHC has been determined on the basis of heat load estimates, including static heat inleaks from ambient temperature, resistive heating and dynamic beam-induced heat loads. At all temperature levels, the static heat inleaks determine at least one third of the total heat loads in nominal operating conditions of the machine. Design validation of individual cryocomponents therefore requires a correct estimate of the heat inleaks they induce at all temperature levels, in order not to exceed the allocated heat budget. This paper illustrates the measurements of heat inleaks for several cold components of the future machine, including insulating supports, radiation shields, multi-layer insulation, instrumentation current leads. Distinct methods to determine the heat flow are chosen, depending on the expected heat loads, the temperature range spanned by the heat intercepts, and the working conditions of the component itself

    CT-guided methylene-blue labelling before thoracoscopic resection of pulmonary nodules.

    OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the efficiency of our technique of methylene-blue labelling of pulmonary nodules to facilitate thoracoscopic recognition and excision. DESIGN: Patients with a peripheral pulmonary nodule smaller than 2.5 cm and not in contact with the visceral pleura were included. Under tomodensitometric guidance, the nodules were labelled with methylene-blue within hours before thoracoscopic wedge resection. If frozen section revealed a primary bronchial carcinoma, thoracotomy and classical resection were performed during the same anesthesia. RESULTS: Between July 1992 and August 1996, 54 nodules were removed in 51 patients. Labelling was performed between 75 and 270 min before surgery and was complicated in 13 patients (25.4%) by a small pneumothorax without any clinical consequence. Labelling allowed successful thoracoscopic recognition of 50 nodules (92%) and thoracoscopic wedge resection was possible in all but one cases (91%). Five patients (9%) required thoracotomy. Histology showed a benign lesion in 22 cases, a primary lung carcinoma in 17 and a metastases in 15. Twenty of the 22 benign nodules (91%) were removed without thoracotomy. According to the protocol, 13 patients with a primary lung tumour underwent lobectomy during the same session. There was no mortality nor morbidity amongst patients who had thoracoscopy only. CONCLUSIONS: Our technique of labelling peripheral pulmonary nodules with methylene-blue is very effective and is not associated with any relevant complication. Thoracoscopic excision and diagnosis is possible in more than 90% of the cases. We therefore recommend this simple, low-cost and reliable technique for nodules not in contact with the visceral pleura before thoracoscopic wedge resection

    Effect of steady-state aerobic exercise intensity and duration on the relationship between reserves of heart rate and oxygen uptake

    Background. The percentages of heart rate (%HRR) or oxygen uptake (%V̇O2R) reserve are used interchangeably for prescribing aerobic exercise intensity due to their assumed 1:1 relationship, although its validity is debated. This study aimed to assess if %HRR and %V̇O2R show a 1:1 relationship during steady-state exercise (SSE) and if exercise intensity and duration affect their relationship. Methods. Eight physically active males (age 22.6±1.2 years) were enrolled. Pre-exercise and maximal HR and V̇O2 were assessed on the first day. In the following 4 days, different SSEs were performed (running) combining the following randomly assigned durations and intensities: 15 min, 45 min, 60% HRR, 80% HRR. Post-exercise maximal HR and V̇O2 were assessed after each SSE. Using pre-exercise and post-exercise maximal values, the average HR and V̇O2 of the last 5 min of each SSE were converted into percentages of the reserves (%RES), which were computed in a 3-way RM-ANOVA (α=0.05) to assess if they were affected by the prescription parameter (HRR or V̇O2R), exercise intensity (60% or 80% HRR), and duration (15 or 45 min). Results. The %RES values were not affected by the prescription parameter (p=0.056) or its interactions with intensity (p=0.319) or duration and intensity (p=0.117), while parameter and duration interaction was significant (p=0.009). %HRRs and %V̇O2Rs did not differ in the 15-min SSEs (mean difference [MD]=0.7 percentage points, p=0.717), whereas %HRR was higher than %V̇O2R in the 45-min SSEs (MD=6.7 percentage points, p=0.009). Conclusion. SSE duration affects the %HRR-%V̇O2R relationship, with %HRRs higher than %V̇O2Rs in SSEs of longer duration

    Results of the IGEC-2 search for gravitational wave bursts during 2005

    The network of resonant bar detectors of gravitational waves resumed coordinated observations within the International Gravitational Event Collaboration (IGEC-2). Four detectors are taking part in this collaboration: ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. We present here the results of the search for gravitational wave bursts over 6 months during 2005, when IGEC-2 was the only gravitational wave observatory in operation. The network data analysis implemented is based on a time coincidence search among AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS, keeping the data from ALLEGRO for follow-up studies. With respect to the previous IGEC 1997-2000 observations, the amplitude sensitivity of the detectors to bursts improved by a factor about 3 and the sensitivity bandwidths are wider, so that the data analysis was tuned considering a larger class of detectable waveforms. Thanks to the higher duty cycles of the single detectors, we decided to focus the analysis on three-fold observation, so to ensure the identification of any single candidate of gravitational waves (gw) with high statistical confidence. The achieved false detection rate is as low as 1 per century. No candidates were found.Comment: 10 pages, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
