© 2016 Elsevier B.V.The spontaneous YAl3(BO3)4 (YAB) and GdAl3(BO3)4 (GdAB) crystals (of nominal composition and co-doped with Er and Yb) up to 4–5 mm in length were grown from high-temperature solutions using K2Mo3O10 based fluxes in the temperature range of 1120–900 °C. Glass–ceramic composites based on the YAB and GdAB micro-crystals have been prepared by quenching YAB–B2O3 and GdAB–B2O3 melts and characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. The vitrified melt was shown to contain micro- and nano-crystalline rare-earth borate phases. Their distribution over the composites has been investigated by electron microscopy and three-dimensional X-ray tomography. The absorption spectra of these materials co-doped with erbium and ytterbium as well as luminescence spectrum were demonstrated

We report what we believe to be the first demonstration of cw and passively mode-locked Yb3+:YAlO3(Yb:YAP) laser operation under diode pumping. Spectroscopic properties of a 0.6 at.%Yb3+-doped YAP single crystal were investigated. Output power up to 1.2 W with slope efficiency of 64.5% in the cw regime and 225 fs pulse duration with average power of 0.8 W from a mode-locked Yb:YAP laser were demonstrated

Comparative analysis of spectral and luminescent properties for glasses SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-K2O-TiO2 doped with chromium ions and forsterite nano-glass ceramic have been done. Initial glasses were obtained by using a conventional melt quenching method. Glass ceramics were produced by the two-stage secondary heat treatment of initial glasses. At the first step of the heat treatment nucleation centers were formed at 700º C. At the second step there was an increase of Mg2SiO4: Cr crystalline phase. Crystalline phase composition and the crystals size were determined by X-ray diffractometer. It is shown that the crystalline phase of Mg2SiO4 (forsterite) is precipitated during the heat treatment. Valency state and the chromium ion position in a forsterite or a glassy matrix are determined according to luminescence and absorption spectra. Identification of absorption and luminescence bands in initial and heat-treated samples is carried out. The dependence between spectral and luminescent properties of chromium and heat treatment modes is examined. The results demonstrate that ions of the trivalent and tetravalent chromium are transforming to the forsterite crystalline phase during the heat treatment, and a part of them remains in the glassy phase. Presented research results can be used for the development of glasses and nanoscale glassceramic for fiber tunable lasers and broadband optical amplifiers of a near infrared range which are used in information and telecommunication technologies

Experimental and theoretical results of investigation of CW Yb:LiLuF4 (Yb:LLF) and Yb:Na4Y6F22 (Yb:NYF) lasers under longitudinal diode laser pump are reported. Slope efficiencies of 41%, 58% with 0.21, 0.53 W of output powers were obtained for the Yb:LLF and Yb:NYF lasers, correspondingly. The Yb:NYF laser demonstrated tunability in the region from 1005 to 1061 nm. The mathematical modelling of CW laser operation predicts under optimized laser parameters optical to optical efficiencies of about 55% and 51% for Yb:LLF and Yb:NYF lasers, respectively. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
