    3-dimensional Gravity from the Turaev-Viro Invariant

    We study the qq-deformed su(2) spin network as a 3-dimensional quantum gravity model. We show that in the semiclassical continuum limit the Turaev-Viro invariant obtained recently defines naturally regularized path-integral aˋ\grave{\rm a} la Ponzano-Regge, In which a contribution from the cosmological term is effectively included. The regularization dependent cosmological constant is found to be 4π2k2+O(k4){4\pi^2\over k^2} +O(k^{-4}), where q2k=1q^{2k}=1. We also discuss the relation to the Euclidean Chern-Simons-Witten gravity in 3-dimension.Comment: 11page

    Efficient Drug Delivery of Paclitaxel Glycoside: A Novel Solubility Gradient Encapsulation into Liposomes Coupled with Immunoliposomes Preparation

    Although the encapsulation of paclitaxel into liposomes has been extensively studied, its significant hydrophobic and uncharged character has generated substantial difficulties concerning its efficient encapsulation into the inner water core of liposomes. We found that a more hydrophilic paclitaxel molecule, 7-glucosyloxyacetylpaclitaxel, retained tubulin polymerization stabilization activity. The hydrophilic nature of 7-glucosyloxyacetylpaclitaxel allowed its efficient encapsulation into the inner water core of liposomes, which was successfully accomplished using a remote loading method with a solubility gradient between 40% ethylene glycol and Cremophor EL/ethanol in PBS. Trastuzumab was then conjugated onto the surface of liposomes as immunoliposomes to selectively target human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2)-overexpressing cancer cells. In vitro cytotoxicity assays revealed that the immunoliposomes enhanced the toxicity of 7-glucosyloxyacetylpaclitaxel in HER2-overexpressing cancer cells and showed more rapid suppression of cell growth. The immunoliposomes strongly inhibited the tumor growth of HT-29 cells xenografted in nude mice. Notably, mice survived when treated with the immunoliposomes formulation, even when administered at a lethal dose of 7-glucosyloxyacetylpaclitaxel in vivo. This data successfully demonstrates immunoliposomes as a promising candidate for the efficient delivery of paclitaxel glycoside

    Prevalence of Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, and Dyslipidemia in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    Recent studies have shown that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes various extrapulmonary comorbidities. In addition, cardiovascular disease, the pathogenesis of which involves atherosclerosis, has been emphasized as a cause of mortality in patients with COPD. In the present study, we investigated the presence of classical risk factors for atherosclerosis in 183 patients with COPD. The prevalence of comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus [DM], and dyslipidemia) was investigated and compared with that in a general population. In patients with COPD, the prevalence of hypertension, DM, and dyslipidemia was 43.2%, 15.8%, and 25.7%, respectively, with the prevalence of DM and dyslipidemia significantly higher in patients than in the general population. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the prevalence of the three disorders in patients with COPD. For example, the prevalence of hypertension was significantly higher than that of diabetes mellitus in patients aged 60-69 years and higher than the prevalence of DM and dyslipidemia in patients aged ≥ 70 years. Regardless of age, hypertension was noted in the greatest number of patients. In conclusion, a high proportion of patients with COPD were found to have the classical risk factors for atherosclerosis. In particular, the prevalence of DM and dyslipidemia was significantly higher in COPD patients than in the general population

    Hemangiopericytoma in the sacrococcygeal space: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>A hemangiopericytoma is a rare, soft-tissue tumor of vascular origin derived from a pericyte of Zimmerman, which is a modified smooth muscle cell that surrounds the small blood vessels. Hemangiopericytomas can occur wherever there are vascular capillaries. However, there are no previous reports of a hemangiopericytoma in the sacrococcygeal space.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe the first reported case of a hemangiopericytoma found in the sacrococcygeal space. A 47-year-old Japanese woman presented with a palpable tumor on the left side of her anus. Preoperative imaging indicated that the tumor was in the sacrococcygeal space without invasion of other organs. A complete resection was performed via a parasacral incision. The histological and immunohistochemical staining patterns supported the diagnosis of a hemangiopericytoma.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A complete resection without piecemeal excision is the best way to treat a hemangiopericytoma. Recognizing the presence of a hemangiopericytoma in the sacrococcygeal space requires appropriate surgery.</p

    Moderately differentiated colorectal adenocarcinoma as a lymph node metastatic phenotype: comparison with well differentiated counterparts

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The differences between the metastatic property of moderately (Mod) and well (Wel) differentiated colorectal adenocarcinoma remain unclear. Since Mod is unable to form complete acini, therefore an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) can occur in that structure. Herein, we hypothesized that Mod metastasizes more easily than the Wel counterparts.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The medical records of 283 consecutive patients with Mod (n = 71) or Wel (n = 212) who underwent surgery were reviewed between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2003, for actual 5-year overall survival. We examined the differences between the clinicopathological characteristics of the Mod and the Wel groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The lymph node involvement (<it>p </it>< 0.0001), lymphatic permeation, venous permeation, depth of invasion, liver metastasis, and carcinomatous peritonitis were significantly higher in the Mod group in comparison to the Wel group. The independent risk factors by a logistic regression analysis for lymph node involvement were as follows: lymphatic permeation, liver metastasis, and Mod (<it>p </it>= 0.0291, Relative Risk of 1.991: 95% Confidence Interval: 1.073-3.697). A Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed that Mod had a trend towards a poor survival (<it>p </it>= 0.0517).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Mod metastasizes to the lymph nodes more easily in comparison to Wel. Therefore, patients with Mod may be considered the existence of lymph node involvement.</p

    The rate of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome in a clinic where primary care physicians are working in Japan

    We analyzed the rate of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome, both characterized as seronegative inflammatory arthritis in elderly, in an outpatient unit where primary care physicians are working in Japan to better understand the epidemiological characteristics of the diseases in Japan. Consecutive outpatients who newly visited at Department of General Medicine, Asahikawa Medical University Hospital, Japan, between April 2004 and March 2010 were analyzed. Each parameter such as age, sex, diagnosis, and biochemical examination was investigated. During the 6 years, 10 or 3 patients were diagnosed as PMR or RS3PE syndrome, respectively. The patients with PMR were 7 women and 3 men, and the average age at diagnosis was 69. Out of all patients aged over 50 (n = 3,347), the rate of PMR was 0.22% in men or 0.36% in women, respectively. On the other hand, RS3PE syndrome was diagnosed in 3 men (76, 76, and 81 years old). The rate of patients with RS3PE syndrome was 0.09% among outpatients aged over 50 indicating that the rate of PMR in an outpatient clinic in Japan is not far from previous findings reported from western countries. When compared with PMR, the rate of RS3PE syndrome was approximately one-third, providing for the first time the rate of RS3PE syndrome when compared with PMR. These epidemilogical data might help us pick up the diseases in primary care setting in Japan

    Identification of the Transgenic Integration Site in Immunodeficient tgε26 Human CD3ε Transgenic Mice

    A strain of human CD3ε transgenic mice, tgε26, exhibits severe immunodeficiency associated with early arrest of T cell development. Complete loss of T cells is observed in homozygous tgε26 mice, but not in heterozygotes, suggesting that genomic disruption due to transgenic integration may contribute to the arrest of T cell development. Here we report the identification of the transgenic integration site in tgε26 mice. We found that multiple copies of the human CD3ε transgene are inserted between the Sstr5 and Metrn loci on chromosome 17, and that this is accompanied by duplication of the neighboring genomic region spanning 323 kb. However, none of the genes in this region were abrogated. These results suggest that the severe immunodeficiency seen in tgε26 mice is not due to gene disruption resulting from transgenic integration
