    Immorality and Irrationality

    Does immorality necessarily involve irrationality? The question is often taken to be among the deepest in moral philosophy. But apparently deep questions sometimes admit of deflationary answers. In this case we can make way for a deflationary answer by appealing to dualism about rationality, according to which there are two fundamentally distinct notions of rationality: structural rationality and substantive rationality. I have defended dualism elsewhere. Here, I’ll argue that it allows us to embrace a sensible – I will not say boring – moderate view about the relationship between immorality and irrationality: roughly, that immorality involves substantive irrationality, but not structural irrationality. I defend this moderate view, and argue that many of the arguments for less moderate views turn either on missing the distinction between substantive and structural rationality, or on misconstruing it

    Urban Evolution: The Role of Water

    The structure, function, and services of urban ecosystems evolve over time scales from seconds to centuries as Earth’s population grows, infrastructure ages, and sociopolitical values alter them. In order to systematically study changes over time, the concept of “urban evolution” was proposed. It allows urban planning, management, and restoration to move beyond reactive management to predictive management based on past observations of consistent patterns. Here, we define and review a glossary of core concepts for studying urban evolution, which includes the mechanisms of urban selective pressure and urban adaptation. Urban selective pressure is an environmental or societal driver contributing to urban adaptation. Urban adaptation is thesequential process by which an urban structure, function, or services becomes more fitted to its changing environment or human choices. The role of water is vital to driving urban evolution as demonstrated by historical changes in drainage, sewage flows, hydrologic pulses, and long-term chemistry. In the current paper, we show how hydrologic traits evolve across successive generations of urban ecosystems via shifts in selective pressures and adaptations over time. We explore multiple empirical examples including evolving: (1) urban drainage from stream burial to stormwater management; (2) sewage flows and water quality in response to wastewater treatment; (3) amplification of hydrologic pulses due to the interaction between urbanization and climate variability; and (4) salinization and alkalinization of fresh water due to human inputs and accelerated weathering. Finally, we propose a new conceptual model for the evolution of urban waters from the Industrial Revolution to the present day based on empirical trends and historical information. Ultimately, we propose that water itself is a critical driver of urban evolution that forces urban adaptation, which transforms the structure, function, and services of urban landscapes, waterways, and civilizations over time

    How Reasoning Aims at Truth

    Many hold that theoretical reasoning aims at truth. In this paper, I ask what it is for reasoning to be thus aim-directed. Standard answers to this question explain reasoning’s aim-directedness in terms of intentions, dispositions, or rule-following. I argue that, while these views contain important insights, they are not satisfactory. As an alternative, I introduce and defend a novel account: reasoning aims at truth in virtue of being the exercise of a distinctive kind of cognitive power, one that, unlike ordinary dispositions, is capable of fully explaining its own exercises. I argue that this account is able to avoid the difficulties plaguing standard accounts of the relevant sort of mental teleology

    Після зруйнування Чортомлицької Січі російськими військами полковника Яковлєва та козаками Гната Галаган між запорожцями та турецьким султаном Ахметом ІІІ було укладено pacta conventa. За умовами угоди при впадінні річки Кам’янки в Дніпро, вище сьогоднішнього м. Берислава (Кизикермена) запорожцями була заснована Кам’янська Січ. Топографія Січі підтверджувалася свідченням козацьких істориків ХVIII ст. С. Мишецьким, документальними джерелами із січового архіву, архіву Малоросійської колегії, дослідженнями археологічних експедицій Державного історико-культурного заповідника запорозького козацтва на о. Хортиця в 1971-1975 рр. та ін. Археологічні знахідки свідчать, що Кам’янська Січ проіснувала близько 8 років з однією тривалою перервою (1712-1728), коли Запорожці сиділи в шостій по числу – Олешківській Січі. Після трагедії на Чортомлицькій Січі новий кошовий спадкоємець героя Полтавської баталії Костя Гордієнка, енергійний і кмітливий Яків Богуш організував опір козаків Чортомлицької Січі, а потім очолив їх і заклав Кам’янську Січ

    Tandem-junction microwire array photoelectrodes have been fabricated by coating np^+-Si radial homojunction microwire arrays sequentially with fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and titanium dioxide (TiO_2). These photoelectrodes effected unassisted water splitting under simulated 1 Sun conditions with an open-circuit potential (E_(oc)) of −1.5 V vs the formal potential for oxygen evolution, E^(0′)(OH^−/O_2), a current density at E = E^(0′)(OH^−/O_2) of 0.78 mA cm^(−2), a fill factor ( ff ) = 0.51, and a photovoltaic-biased photoelectrochemical ideal regenerative cell efficiency of 0.6%

    Stellar-Mass Black Holes in the Solar Neighborhood

    We search for nearby, isolated, accreting, ``stellar-mass'' (3 to 100M100M_\odot) black holes. Models suggest a synchrotron spectrum in visible wavelengths and some emission in X-ray wavelengths. Of 3.7 million objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, about 150,000 objects have colors and properties consistent with such a spectrum, and 87 of these objects are X-ray sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Thirty-two of these have been confirmed not to be black-holes using optical spectra. We give the positions and colors of these 55 black-hole candidates, and quantitatively rank them on their likelihood to be black holes. We discuss uncertainties the expected number of sources, and the contribution of blackholes to local dark matter.Comment: Replaced with version accepted by ApJ. 40 pages, 8 figure

    The Influence of Structure and Processing on the Behavior of TiO_2 Protective Layers for Stabilization of n-Si/TiO_2/Ni Photoanodes for Water Oxidation

    Light absorbers with moderate band gaps (1–2 eV) are required for high-efficiency solar fuels devices, but most semiconducting photoanodes undergo photocorrosion or passivation in aqueous solution. Amorphous TiO_2 deposited by atomic-layer deposition (ALD) onto various n-type semiconductors (Si, GaAs, GaP, and CdTe) and coated with thin films or islands of Ni produces efficient, stable photoanodes for water oxidation, with the TiO_2 films protecting the underlying semiconductor from photocorrosion in pH = 14 KOH(aq). The links between the electronic properties of the TiO_2 in these electrodes and the structure and energetic defect states of the material are not yet well-elucidated. We show herein that TiO_2 films with a variety of crystal structures and midgap defect state distributions, deposited using both ALD and sputtering, form rectifying junctions with n-Si and are highly conductive toward photogenerated carriers in n-Si/TiO_2/Ni photoanodes. Moreover, the photovoltage of these electrodes can be modified by annealing the TiO_2 in reducing or oxidizing environments. All of the polycrystalline TiO_2 films with compact grain boundaries investigated herein protected the n-Si photoanodes against photocorrosion in pH = 14 KOH(aq). Hence, in these devices, conduction through the TiO_2 layer is neither specific to a particular amorphous or crystalline structure nor determined wholly by a particular extrinsic dopant impurity. The coupled structural and energetic properties of TiO_2, and potentially other protective oxides, can therefore be controlled to yield optimized photoelectrode performance
