    Mechanism for the failure of the Edwards hypothesis in the SK spin glass

    The dynamics of the SK model at T=0 starting from random spin configurations is considered. The metastable states reached by such dynamics are atypical of such states as a whole, in that the probability density of site energies, p(λ)p(\lambda), is small at λ=0\lambda=0. Since virtually all metastable states have a much larger p(0)p(0), this behavior demonstrates a qualitative failure of the Edwards hypothesis. We look for its origins by modelling the changes in the site energies during the dynamics as a Markov process. We show how the small p(0)p(0) arises from features of the Markov process that have a clear physical basis in the spin-glass, and hence explain the failure of the Edwards hypothesis.Comment: 5 pages, new title, modified text, additional reference

    New light curves and ephemeris for the close eclipsing binary V963 PER

    We have obtained CCD photometry in 2010-11 of V963 Per (=GSC3355 0394), which is a recently identified close binary star with unequal eclipse depths. The seven new eclipse timings yield an improved ephemeris, but we caution that secondary eclipse can be affected by variation of the light curve. This variation seems to be on a monthly timescale at the few percent level.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Perturbation theory for the one-dimensional trapping reaction

    We consider the survival probability of a particle in the presence of a finite number of diffusing traps in one dimension. Since the general solution for this quantity is not known when the number of traps is greater than two, we devise a perturbation series expansion in the diffusion constant of the particle. We calculate the persistence exponent associated with the particle's survival probability to second order and find that it is characterised by the asymmetry in the number of traps initially positioned on each side of the particle.Comment: 18 pages, no figures.     Nonequilibrium stationary states and equilibrium models with long range interactions

    It was recently suggested by Blythe and Evans that a properly defined steady state normalisation factor can be seen as a partition function of a fictitious statistical ensemble in which the transition rates of the stochastic process play the role of fugacities. In analogy with the Lee-Yang description of phase transition of equilibrium systems, they studied the zeroes in the complex plane of the normalisation factor in order to find phase transitions in nonequilibrium steady states. We show that like for equilibrium systems, the ``densities'' associated to the rates are non-decreasing functions of the rates and therefore one can obtain the location and nature of phase transitions directly from the analytical properties of the ``densities''. We illustrate this phenomenon for the asymmetric exclusion process. We actually show that its normalisation factor coincides with an equilibrium partition function of a walk model in which the ``densities'' have a simple physical interpretation.Comment: LaTeX, 23 pages, 3 EPS figure

    Fork in the road: In-vehicle navigation systems and older drivers

    A significant characteristic of the UK's rapidly ageing population is the high percentage of older adults who rely extensively on their private automobile to stay mobile. There are, however, functional declines that occur with ageing that affect an individual's ability to drive safely. Additionally, navigating becomes more difficult as we age and can result in older adults reducing their driving on unfamiliar routes. Thus, understanding how older drivers currently plan and then way-find journeys will allow future in-vehicle navigation systems to be more appropriate for the needs of older adults. This paper reports on the findings of six focus groups with older drivers; three groups with those who use in-vehicle navigation systems and three groups with those who do not. The focus groups found that the use of in-vehicle navigation systems provide older drivers with an increased confidence on the roads, a form of companionship in the car and an element of pleasure in driving. When planning long distance trips, older drivers will use online planning tools that provide an initial familiarity with their traditional method of navigation. Some participants who do not currently use any driving aids reported the use of potentially unsafe navigating behaviours to assist them on road network indicating a clear need for assistance in navigating. Finally, there are some significant barriers for in-vehicle navigation systems to overcome before they can be considered beneficial for older drivers

    Modelling autonomous vehicle parking: An agent-based simulation approach

Unlike human-driven vehicles, AVs can strategically park or cruise until summoned by users. Utilizing utility theory, the parking decision-making processes of AVs users are explored, taking into account constraints related to both cost and time. An agent-based simulation approach is adopted to construct an AV parking model, reflecting the complex dynamics of the parking decision process in the real world, where each user\u27s choice has a ripple effect on traffic conditions, consequently affecting the feasible options for other users. The simulation experiments indicate that 11.50% of AVs gravitate towards parking lots near their destinations, while over 50% of AVs avoid public parking amenities altogether. This trend towards minimizing individual parking costs prompts AVs to undertake extended empty cruising, resulting in a significant increase of 48.18% in total vehicle mileage. Moreover, the pricing structure across various parking facilities and management dictates the parking preferences of AVs, establishing a nuanced trade-off between parking expenses and proximity for these vehicles

    Random Networks with Tunable Degree Distribution and Clustering

    We present an algorithm for generating random networks with arbitrary degree distribution and Clustering (frequency of triadic closure). We use this algorithm to generate networks with exponential, power law, and poisson degree distributions with variable levels of clustering. Such networks may be used as models of social networks and as a testable null hypothesis about network structure. Finally, we explore the effects of clustering on the point of the phase transition where a giant component forms in a random network, and on the size of the giant component.     Fixation and consensus times on a network: a unified approach

    We investigate a set of stochastic models of biodiversity, population genetics, language evolution and opinion dynamics on a network within a common framework. Each node has a state, 0 < x_i < 1, with interactions specified by strengths m_{ij}. For any set of m_{ij} we derive an approximate expression for the mean time to reach fixation or consensus (all x_i=0 or 1).
